The Outlaws did not originate Freeborn Man, nor were even among the first to cover it. This was written by Mark Lindsay and Keith Allison of Paul Revere and the Raiders in the 60's. It appears on the Alias Pink Puzz album. It has become such a bluegrass classic that it has been attributed to many others, mostly Jimmy Martin or the Outlaws.
