Molly Ringwald didn't do a terrible job, but she definitely couldn't hold her own with Sinise and the other stars in this movie (even Rob Lowe, in my opinion). I love the song at the beginning though, its perfect
"its my father.. im gonna bury him in his garden.. if u couldnt tell by my horrible acting... hes dead.... yep... im tired... and hot.... can u do it?"
Honestly, I half expected to hear either "The End from The Doors or Paint It Black from The Rolling Stones. What the hell was that crap on the record?
I remember my local radio station doing "The Stand updates" after each part and nice line here: "Molly Ringwald buries her father while singing Amazing Grace. What I want to know is, who's the amazing idiot who cast her in this? Sorry, Molly, you were Pretty in Pink but you stink in the Stand."
I love the songs they use at the beginning of each part. The first one is "Don't Fear the Reaper", this one is "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House, I wonder which one they use in the 3rd one...
@TheBookWorm1718 Was it supposed to be a week ago when the last installment happened? I got the impression some time had past and that the sickness caused the father to stop working on the house.
@mattd687 I get that impression too but it's only supposed to be about a week or so that passes from when we see him in the garden to when Fran's burying him.
Am I the only one who was creeped out by Fran sewing her father into a body bag? I know the whole show is in general very creepy but that especially...I don't know, just something about it.
I used to live where this part of the movie was filmed. Every time I walked by the Nubble Lighthouse I would think of "Don't Dream It's Over" Watching this again, though, I wonder: did Molly Ringwald actually READ The Stand? Too much '90s Valley Girl and not enough Seacoast grit...
i got the extended version of the book, which is awesome its only a few extra dollars, but now im going like "wtf?!" every two seconds cause so much is cut out from the book lol.
You know what I realized- if this was true and all the humans did die, then the world would end in nuclear holocaust, as all of the nuclear power plants all over the world would explode as they would be be able to cool and be maintained.
Did Frances sing Amazing Grace in the book? Did she become Christian? I thought the character was Jewish.
i think the book goldsmith's family had more christian relevant stuff than jewish, but honestly i couldn't say what official religious belief any of the goldsmith's held. the name is kind of more jewish??
The guy who plays Harold used to star in an early 90's show called Parker Lewis, thought he was kind of cute, he was also in Toby Keith's song Wiskey For My Men, Beer For My Horses.
I can't stand Frannie, never liked her at all, I always hoped Harold would merk her at some point in the book, ungrateful whore. And they absolultey RUINED Harold in this movie so far, he was supposed to be fat on purpose, it showed why he acted in some ways like he did, if he was skinny and attractive he would have been able to get women in real life and the jealousy of Fran would not have been as intense. Bastards ruin every movie. Like the 10 minute jail scene with nick, dumb waste of film.
@corning1 Ungrateful whore? She should be obliged to be with someone she is not into because he has feelings for her? I think she is kind of irritating, especially at the end, but Harold is creepy, with a pinch of making up for something missing. Proud peacock strut with no tail-feathers.
@TheFlanker35 I think it is because it is a common funeral song and so sets the scene. I don't know too much about Jewish funerals, but a majority of the audience would most likely associate "Amazing Grace" with a death.
Yeah, I guess it has become a general funeral song even though it has very Christian, specifically Protestant, themes(other religions don't believe that grace saves). One of the themes of the story was the importance of religious values that transcend any particular religion, a sort of spiritual humanism or universalism so I guess that makes sense. This is really apparent when they compare Flagg to the spirit in Children of the Corn.
@TheFlanker35 She was not Christian in the book, She was Pregnant by her Boyfriend "Jess" at the begining and Harold Lauder was 16. The book is so much different than the movie its crazy.
@TheFlanker35 Amazing Grace is just a beautiful song...and believe me..having served in the military..you don't find many atheists or non believers when it comes to life and death. plausible...for this part.
@TheFlanker35 no she doesnt sing and she buries her father alone. also harold in the book is fat covered in zits is a fucking weirdo and is 16. im reading the book for the first time and i have to say it iis much better then this. but its still nice that they made it
This is the only way to make Stephen King books into film. They're just too intricate to be properly adapted into a 2 hour movie. I heard a horrifying rumor that they're going to make the dark tower books into a trilogy...
@heavyd1313 that might be a good thing if it's only the first 3 books....I really don't want to see the 4th or any after in film...or in print ever again
@MultiLegoDude I always had a problem with Molly Ringwald as Frannie. Frannie (in the book) was a much stronger person than this. Corin Nemec as Harold was good, but his character development wasn't as strong.

@Luba72 Yeah, Harold was always my favorite character, even if he turned out to be a bad guy. I just know what it's like feeling unattractive and having someone you love not even give you a fair chance and give her heart to someone else (in my case, another woman).
Is it just me or does she seem pretty upbeat and chipper for just burying her dad in the garden earlier that day..bouncing around playing records, making lemonade and skipping out to the other room to grab the record player. O.o
Molly Ringwald, a nerd, and 80's song. Feels like I'm watching a John Hughes film, lol. This version of Harold is just your basic funny nerd character that we've all seen a 1000 times on Saved By the Bell, etc. In the book, Harold was much creepy and disturbed.
Ugh. Harold is a good character, but really he's disgusting. Zit covered, obsessive, emotional teenager that writes cheesy stories and masturbates all night.

i just bought the uncut version a few days ago...it is going to take me forever to finish that damn book, but it is well worth it. one of stephen kings finest...if not the best one i have read so far. the creepiest stories, imo...are the ones that are most plausible...and the scenario in The Stand really is:| biological warfare...its not that hard to fathom unfortunately.
bloodycape200, it's already here. seen what's happening in Ukraine w the black lung plague? google it. it is NOT swine flu. crop dusters come, then people get sick & die in days.
This is wierd, I read about this a couple months ago, apparently a mossad agent leaked info about an upcoming planned outbreak in the Ukraine, and there you have it.........
The actress from Fran is a real letdown. Then again, I was never really a fan of the bitch (the character) in the first place lol. If not for her, Harold might have been a better guy! Or maybe not.

i just bought the uncut version a few days ago...it is going to take me forever to finish that damn book, but it is well worth it. one of stephen kings finest...if not the best one i have read so far. the creepiest stories, imo...are the ones that are most plausible...and the scenario in The Stand really is:| biological warfare...its not that hard to fathom unfortunately.

The Stand uncutismy favorite book I have ever read, youl love it. After you are done with the book you should listen to Among The Living By: Anthrax

bloodycape200, it's already here. seen what's happening in Ukraine w the black lung plague? google it. it is NOT swine flu. crop dusters come, then people get sick & die in days.

Did anybody see Family Guy's take on three Stephen King stories. This would be a cool one, albeit long. Stewie as Randall Flagg...

molly ringwald, apparently incredibly popular back then

The actress from Fran is a real letdown. Then again, I was never really a fan of the bitch (the character) in the first place lol. If not for her, Harold might have been a better guy! Or maybe not.

It was either that song or Rick Astley. This was just more sensitive and right for the moment. But I would have gone with the latter.
