Wesley Willis has forever altered my concept of sentence structure, syntax, etc. for the best. Whenever I do something well, I see it has having done it like a magikist.
I am writing a paper on Wesley and a few other artists as contemporary outsiders for an American 20th Cent. art history course and have been reading TONS of articles and books, and watching many many videos, but I can honestly say this is one of the greatest sources I have found. Thank you so much for sharing this!!!
Wesley called me on the phone a few days before his death - it was one of the saddest, most heartbreaking experiences of my life. It's nice to hear Wesley here, I don't think I've ever heard him so up and happy. I especially like the constant references to various "patrols". God bless this guy, if there is a heaven he is there for sure.
thank you so much for sharing this. i was looking at my wes poster on my wall, when i saw and met him in houston before his passing. god bless you for sharing this with everyone. when we get to heaven, wesley has glasses of soy milk waiting for us! rip wesley. and god bless the uploader(s).
My friend is really lucky. He actually got to drive Willis to the airport. I guess the roadies packed up his keyboard and drove to the airport without him, and my friend's older brother drove him to the airport. Wesley was all 'you guys are my new buds. I'm gonna write a song about Denver Colorado.' My friend at first was kinda weirded out by this guy. But yeah Wesley headbutted him hard, and said he'd be back. My friend still has his ticket for the show he was gonna do before he died...
@coopercrue Naw, I'm 6'2 that's not tall. Wesley Willis was like 6'5. 6'2 anymore is about normal. People are a lot taller now than say, in the 50's. I wonder if by 2085 or something the average height will be 6'6?
@coopercrue I meant nothing by it I was just commenting on how people are evolving into larger taller animals now.Didn't mean anything negative towards you. Sorry if you took it that way.I don't always check dates on comments.
I don't think Wes cared whether or not he could sing, he just wanted to entertain people, put smiles on their faces, and bring joy into their lives. He really valued God, friendship, and music. Any one of those things would be a joyride.
No, Tracy Morgan. I'm gonna start a website, GIVE TRACY HIS OSCAR. The movement involved petitioning to get a Wesley Willis biopic with Tracy playing Wesley Willis. This will be his Ray.
Eh, don't expect a stellar interview from students. It takes experience to be shit-hot. Wesley's working it though, its still an entertaining listen, and gives some idea on his motivations.
Actually people miss that point , freedom. Wesley had a hell of a sense of humor and seemed to enjoy the effect he had on others. I had a friend who sadly came down with schizophrenia too, hell of a disease, but the guy actually found it really funny the way people would lose it laughing everytime he'd talk about dinosaurs or secret agents or whatever nutty shit he was thinking about that week.
@duckmonsterX My favorite quote about rock n' roll is about Little Richard but it reminds me of WW, as well:
"Rock n' roll allowed this bugeyed, f**got, n**ger with a limp who otherwise would have become a ward of the church or county in some shithole southern town that you've never heard of to become self sufficent and a star."
Wesley figured out the occupational and art therapy that has been used in institutions for years on his own and became self sufficient through it. That is commendable.
I love that laugh. It was so genuine. My girlfriend and I got the heatbutt a couple of years before he passed. It's a great memory. I'll always remember his warning to someone who was interrupting his rocknroll show "...get off the stage before I tell on you."
i like him like karo's sugar-free syrup. what a sweet, unaffected man....given the hurdles he must have faced. peace to him in heaven....he's a hero's in my mind.
thanks for this. it seems like there's been a resurfacing of enthusiasm for this guy in the past couple years for some reason and a renewed love for him. lots of lost tapes, clips and footage has shown up on youtube from dusty closets, and cupboards......this is good! thanks for sharing these rare intimate moments of wesley with us. it's now immortalized in a way. glad you got the audio off your tape too before it got damaged or lost.
this is amazing. what a piece of Wesley history. if you don't mind my asking, how did you guys get him to come to your school? must've been pretty unbelievable.
It sounds crazy but all we did was call him at his house. Haha we somehow got his number and asked him to come play a concert. The money was guaranteed, so I think that's what convinced him. I spent 2 days lugging him around in my station wagon, including the trip to my school for the interview. Wesley didn't care where he was as long as he was having a good joyride.
@cupcupdrinks oh wow hahaha... that's incredible man! You got something to tell a legion there... absolutely incredible. fans would have died for that chance... He was a great man...
that guy could really whip a horse's ass with a belt. miss you wesley.
