Metallica's music never went to hell. They are a band that plays music and music is a form of self expression. Just because they started out playing fast heavy music doesn't mean that their feelings and musical style can't change. Just because you don't like there later stuff doesn't mean it sucks. The band themselves have said St anger was kind of like therapy to them and helped them recover. They are aloud to make music for themselves for expression, not just us and we need to respect that.

Regrettably, I have to very respectfully disagree a bit. People can argue about the musical content on their last two albums until the cows come home, but it's all just opinion. However, the very real fact of the matter is (ask any industry professional) that SA and DM are very poorly recorded and poorly produced albums that no professional band should have been caught dead releasing. They reek of cash-in.

@760thorax They had the sense of mind to delete the stuff they were recording at The Presidio, but in my very unimportant opinion, the stuff on St. Anger and Death Magnetic is better, but still not good enough to make the grade. To me, those albums are cash-ins by record companies that know people will buy anything with the Metallica logo on it. They factually lift guitar leads from past albums and The Unforgiven III is probably the most embarrassing song the band has ever released...

I want to think the best of the Metallica guys, but through comments made here and there in interviews and the shockingly poor production value on their last two albums, it's very clear to me that behind the scenes, Metallica is a way for them to pay for the comforts they enjoy, not their reason for breathing like it once seemed to be. That's fine, but it makes for uninspired music.

Kill 'em All is a sonically better sounding album than either SA or DM, and that's not saying much. In any case, they crunched DM something fierce and it suffers from serious clipping. That's not being "raw", that's just being unprofessional. But I don't think that's the band's fault.
