I’m sure you’ve already answered this somewhere else but how effective is your mash tun? I saw the video where you made it yourself and I was looking into doing the same because of all the pre made mash tuns on line the price is around $120-160 and that just seems insane. So getting back to the point, is your mash tun effective, have you made any modifications since the original video, and if you could guess what was the final price of your mash tun? I really appreciate it, thanks!
@patsfan1284 I don't know about the price but I'm guessing around $50. It's effective. Efficiency still has other factors beyond the design of the tun.
@bbt95762 PVC since it's cheap and that valve because that's what Northern Brewer had for sale for coolers without having to drill anything. It's been working fine for me.
@TheEndosymbiosis It was pretty easy and cheap to make but it looks like I need to use CPVC. I used it last week for a brew session and it worked great. I calculated around 72% efficiency. A video of that session may or may not make it up. I'll have take a look at the footage.
+1 CPVC for hot water, i wouldn't use MEK or Denatured alcohol they are both poisonous and unpalatable... by clean PVC if you mean removing lettering/bar code on pipe, use 0000 steel wool then oxi clean/starsan ... my friend made a similar manifold, no need the glue fitting, they should press fit together and by not gluing will make for easy cleaning...
@StumpyJoeJr +2 on cpvc, i just realized after reading the comments that you werent using that. i went w/ the stainless steal braid instead and its been great. your initial set up looks good though, your mash tun will last days....
@Tantrum777 I'll probably get a crusher if I start buying base malt in bulk. Right now I just get it crushed at the homebrew shop. Next purchase will likely be a charcoal filter for my water. Then I want to get a second burner and build up a three tier gravity fed system.
Just giving you a hard time. Nice work.

Why use PVC for the collector? and not purchase a PVC ball valve too?

Great job! This looks awesome. You clearly did your research.
If I ever decide to upgrade from my quick-and-dirty mash tun I'll probably make something very similar.
Looking forward to your next brew day vid. Cheers!

Sigh...I have so much to learn about brewing it's a bit overwhelming honestly. I guess it'll be fun and entertaining to say the least.

@JoSmoBN Grab copies of How To Brew and Charlie Papazian's book and you'll be fine.

Looks good bro, but u need to use CPVC instead of PVC. CPVC is rated for the hot water we use to brew all grain with

@martinparmer Ah, didn't know that. Thanks for the tip.

I hope to build a mash tun someday. Would be cool to try / review some of your homebrews.

@Tsalts Hopefully it works 'cause I'm going to brew a batch today. I've been kegging more batches recently so I bottle less.

Looks like you did a good job. Now that your doing All grain you might wanna get a barley crusher. There is always something extra to buy.
