I daren't read this message thread.... cos I'll bet that there's some moronic religio-conspiracy freak claiming the Earth is 'in fact' at the centre of the system and spouting pseudo-woo-woo to 'prove' it. And that would wreck my 'feel good' mood that Sagan gives me everytime.
@SSJKenshin I'm sorry to be the one to tell you that, yes, at the far end of the creationist spectrum there are people who insist on the geocentric model. In some ways it is less scientifically stupid than believing the Earth is 6000 years old, but it is still very stupid. Even more tragically, there are still Muslims and Christians who insist the Earth is flat. Go figure.
The interesting thing was, with over 1000 years to work with the Ptolemy model, it had been tweaked with epicycles within epicycles so that it was able to adapt to increased measurement accuracy as time went on. Copernicus' model was not as accurate as Ptolemy's because he used simple circles, but it's saving grace was that it was much easier to use with a quill pen on paper, and Copernicus tried to keep the church off his back by selling it as a "quick -n-dirty" calculation expedient...
... rather than as a real model. The astronomers in the church saw through that, though, so it didn't do him any good. The accuracy didn't return until Kepler threw out the circles and replaced them with ellipses. Kepler did, over years time, literally millions of hand calculations to prove his laws, and also to try to prove his solid geometry failure.
Apparently he got it after a mathematician cut it off in a sword duel... over a mathematical problem.
What I learned in school though was that it was only the tip that he lost, not the most of the nose itself. If that was the case he would most likely have to use a ribbon or something to hold it in place.
@founoe: If you google "tycho brahe images" you can see that those images that show it show it being almost the whole nose, starting at the tip of the nasal bone about glasses height.
Tycho Brahe did not accept that the earth goes around the sun, not because he did not knew enough but because he knew too much. He measured parallax, which is the same when we close one eye than the other, when we do that the view changes. He did not observe this effect, because no one knew that time the stars are very very far. Tycho Brahe's equipments were not fine enough to show the parallax effect. There is a nice size crater on the moon named after the great Tycho Brahe.
@Kofering1978 But was I think is funny is that while he did think that the sun revolved around the earth, he also thought the other 5 planets revolved around the sun WHILE the sun was revolving around the earth, so that the solar system had 2 centers. The primary center (earth) in which everything revolves, and a secondary center (the sun) in which the planets revolve, that revolves around the primary center. This is called the geo-heliocentric model. Its pretty funny when you think about it.
awesome love this stuff the sweeping quadrant thing is just saying that in speeding up as aplanet gets closer to the sun the arc increases proportionally to the decreasind radius yes? so this shows a constant relationship expressed as areas?
There is - I wish I were joking - a scientology ad on top of the suggestions list.
Sigh...

We've got a new janitor called Keplar, he's really good, he sweeps out the same area each night.

He didn't die of eating to much. He died of a mercury poisoning in his moustache. Someone put the poison in his drink, in which he drank.

he used different noses for different occasions. i heard his gold nose was for special occasions, he also had wood ones etc.
