Hmm do you know what the song was written for? It's for the Himeyuri Students who were killed by the Japanese Imperial Army in forced suicides for Hirohito and meat shields for the Army. Miyazawa Kazuhumi wanted to express the pain and anger at not knowing about such things for so long until an ancient survivor recounted her tale of the incident, a culmination of the long prejudice against the Ryukyu Kingdom islanders who were only relatively recently added to Japan.

I'm Okinawa, and my both my grandfather and great grandfather were forced to fight on the battle of Okinawa in WWII. Unfortunately, my great grandfather was one of those who had to kill himself to save his family. My grandfather was shot by a Japanese soldier, but was saved by an Navy hospital corpsman. He was still very prejudice toward anyone who wasn't Okinawan till he passed away in '05. However, this nostalgic song makes me miss Okinawa... I need to go back... Someday...

This is a beautiful song and a masterful performance. This version in particular gives me goosebumps. I think that people who listen should know that it is a song between two lovers who are separated by war and death. While it is natural and good that people disagree, let us hope that one day we can all live without war.
The translation doesn't matter to me anymore. The sound of her passion and the accompanying samisen tell the story of my youth on Okinawa as I listened to the radio echo voices from the heart all afternoon long.
This is one of my favorite songs in the world. I heard it first from Natsukawa, and felt in love with her voice. The Boom does a fantastic job as well (granted, they are the original performers). I love Okinawa. It is my favorite place in the world!
Well, be that as it may, but I do not think that you can translate literally without changing the message either. Every word has a certain image in a language, and in a cultural context. There is also the matter chosing between different possibilities. "Vaarwel voor duizend generaties" ( "chiyo ni sayonara" in my native language, sounds rather strange and would imply the possibility of meeting after 1000 generation., So it does not quite cover it in Dutch.I don't think the same msg is possible.

Well if you wish to see translating as the searching of nearest equivalent terms in another language... Personally I think translating is conveying the message and emotions behind the words best in another language, which would make this "interpreting" a part of translating.
Every time I hear her version of the song, I cry...it's so powerful. It reminds me of Okinawa so much, the island I was born on. I am reminded of the ocean breeze, warm and sunny with winds...just as it is there. Peace and serenity.

In this version, some Japanese words are switched out with the Okinawan version of the word like wind changed from "kaze" to "kaji". If the entire thing was in Okinawan, it would not be understandable to normal Japanese speakers at all.

Now, sugarcane filed waves with winds very peacefully under sunshine of southern island, but there come up many human bones from the sugarcane field even now.
Uji means sugarcane in Okinawan dialect. In order to hide from US-navy, Okinawan people hided in small caves covered with sugarcanes as camouflage. Japanese citizens really believed that the US navy was very evil like devil. When the cave was besieged, Okinawan citizen killed each other by knives in friends hand, or by blowing themselves with hand grenades.
The repetition of sadness means long sad history of small island of Okinawa. Okinawa was once an independent empire 400 hundred years ago. But the empire was conquered by a Japanese local lord Satsuma. By demise of Tokugawa-tycoon, Okinawa was released from exploitation by Satsuma. But fortunate time again ended shortly by world-war II.
The phrase Chiyo ni Sayonara means farewell forever. The phrase Yachiyo ni Sayonara means farewell forever and ever. Every Japanese easily understand the metaphor of the phrase because the phrase comes from Japanese National Anthem Kimigayo. The lyrics of Japanese National Anthem starts by the phrase Kimigayo wa Chiyo ni Yachiyo ni. It means May the age of our emperor be flourished eternally, forever and ever.

This is a beautiful song and a masterful performance. This version in particular gives me goosebumps. I think that people who listen should know that it is a song between two lovers who are separated by war and death. While it is natural and good that people disagree, let us hope that one day we can all live without war.

The translation doesn't matter to me anymore. The sound of her passion and the accompanying samisen tell the story of my youth on Okinawa as I listened to the radio echo voices from the heart all afternoon long.

Yes, the literal translation would be, Chiyo = "thousand centuries," and Yachiyo = "eight thousand centuries."

This is one of my favorite songs in the world. I heard it first from Natsukawa, and felt in love with her voice. The Boom does a fantastic job as well (granted, they are the original performers). I love Okinawa. It is my favorite place in the world!

Well, be that as it may, but I do not think that you can translate literally without changing the message either. Every word has a certain image in a language, and in a cultural context. There is also the matter chosing between different possibilities. "Vaarwel voor duizend generaties" ( "chiyo ni sayonara" in my native language, sounds rather strange and would imply the possibility of meeting after 1000 generation., So it does not quite cover it in Dutch.I don't think the same msg is possible.

Well if you wish to see translating as the searching of nearest equivalent terms in another language... Personally I think translating is conveying the message and emotions behind the words best in another language, which would make this "interpreting" a part of translating.

Every time I hear her version of the song, I cry...it's so powerful. It reminds me of Okinawa so much, the island I was born on. I am reminded of the ocean breeze, warm and sunny with winds...just as it is there. Peace and serenity.

@LavenderYuki It's a mix of both Uchinaguchi (the Okinawan dialect) and the normal Japanese language. In this version, some Japanese words are switched out with the Okinawan version of the word like wind changed from "kaze" to "kaji". If the entire thing was in Okinawan, it would not be understandable to normal Japanese speakers at all.

Uji means sugarcane in Okinawan dialect. In order to hide from US-navy, Okinawan people hided in small caves covered with sugarcanes as camouflage. Japanese citizens really believed that the US navy was very evil like devil. When the cave was besieged, Okinawan citizen killed each other by knives in friends hand, or by blowing themselves with hand grenades.

The repetition of sadness means long sad history of small island of Okinawa. Okinawa was once an independent empire 400 hundred years ago. But the empire was conquered by a Japanese local lord Satsuma. By demise of Tokugawa-tycoon, Okinawa was released from exploitation by Satsuma. But fortunate time again ended shortly by world-war II.

The phrase Chiyo ni Sayonara means farewell forever. The phrase Yachiyo ni Sayonara means farewell forever and ever. Every Japanese easily understand the metaphor of the phrase because the phrase comes from Japanese National Anthem Kimigayo. The lyrics of Japanese National Anthem starts by the phrase Kimigayo wa Chiyo ni Yachiyo ni. It means May the age of our emperor be flourished eternally, forever and ever.
