Those Bibles were not in English, for personal use, but in the local language, for proselytizing purposes. And this is wrong. US Army is there to fight Talibans and restore peace, not to convert the locals. Not only it is wrong but it also could trigger the hostility of the population. And a hostile population would rather support the Talibans than the US Army.
So the decision to burn those Bibles was not only right but also pragmatic.
