As an Australian watching this footage of mass looting is completely alien to my experience. I can't believe people would actually rob and terrorise their own communities, honestly what kind of people do this? Even in developing and third world countries I have visited in Asia where opportunities are very limited, people would never think of doing this kind of stuff. I'll just address two points. Firstly water cannons and rubber bullets would be ineffective. Those are crowd control measures but not at all useful for dealing with a small number of individuals moving quickly.
Secondly there is no way we could afford to send them to prison for 5 years. Additionally prison only serves to further alienate. Community service would be far more sensible.
