@TayEmification As a beginner in bass, I might suggest you get something cheap in price but good in sound quality. Spending 1.6k on your first bass might not be smart if you find that you aren't interested in the instrument.
@kylewb3 We sell them as quickly as we can get them. The demand for them far exceeds the supply. Keep an eye on our Rickenbacker page on the Bass Emporium website for availability. You can find the link in the description above. We update it whenever one of these beauties arrives.
I play guitar, I'm a strat player. But if I were to take up base, this more than likely would be the base i would get, 2nd choice fender Precision. Or maybe both if I could afford it.
You guys put together great demo videos. All questions are anticipated and answered. Pros and cons of each instrument is evenly presented. The demos are great. Thanks!
@dvdfrnzwbr Hi - this is not shellacked, but is the same poly finish as used on the body. Ric has always done this (expect in a few cases) and it is really quite comfortable and fun to play.
@dvdfrnzwbr I own this exact bass, and the poly finish on the neck is hardly noticeable. If I compare my Fender Jazz bass to the Rick, they feel almost the same as far as the fretboard goes.
If there is anything that you would have trouble getting used to is the shape of the neck of a Rickenbacker. My Fender C-Shaped bass neck (not the modern C) feels so small compared to the big Rickenbacker neck. Its great but hard to play for a bass player that is used to modern basses.
@zapadlowsky Give us a call at the store. We'd love to help you find the right amp. Our phone number is 1-800-445-5578 and we're open 10am-6pm (Central) Tuesday through Saturday. Hope to hear from you soon.
@g4geetar Feel free to give us a call at the store any time. We'd love to find the right bass for you. Our phone number is 1-800-445-5578 and we're open 10am-6pm (Central) Tuesday through Saturday. Hope to hear from you soon.
@g4geetar They're both fantastic basses, but the Rickenbacker is more of a niche instrument and is not nearly as tonally versatile as a Jazz bass. If you already own a Jazz style bass, then go for the Rickenbacker, but if you don't then the Jazz is a must have. Jazz basses have slim necks and they're well suited to people with small hands, Rickenbacker necks vary from baseball bat thick to Ibanez thin.
I own both a 4003 (2007) and a 4001 (1980), and the two basses are quite different. The cutaways on the 4001's are much wider than the 4003's, plus the neck on the 4001 feels a bit rounder. However, the 4001 is a bit more comfortable to play around the 1st fret than the 4003. And lastly, the 4001 weighs a little bit more than the 4003.
Those are the differences I noticed between the two instruments. As far as sound goes, they're not much different. But I prefer the 4001 over the 4003.

@Philosopher131 The ones that we have been getting are Ric strings. The D'Addario have colored ball ends - these are the Ric strings with the solid silver balls.
This is exactly how a demo should be done!, a nice introduction overviewing the bass followed by playing with many tonal varieties with clear explanations! If anything i was you would have shown how it sounds with different techniques but great demo!
Best basses on the market in my opinion, but thats also why they are so freaking expensive. Werent Rickenbackers much cheaper before they got so famous?
No - since the neck/body design, woods, etc. creates the majority of the tone, you will still have a jazz bass "signature sound". The only way to get a Rick sound is to get a Rick.
My dad used to have one of these.. But he sold it.. Why couldn't he just look into the future and realize that his future daughter plays the Bass, and wants a fukken Rickenbacker.. They are sooo expensive..
Sweet for a 4 string! Too bad I quit playing 4 strings in '95. With the strong growth in the 5 string, I can't believe so many 4 strings are still available and selling.

@yaoifanboykitty A moron is a moron and you can't change that! Dude YOU are a moron!! A 5 String takes more intelligence and it is definitely evident that you are lacking in that area BIG TIME!!
@TheBadAssKiller no he isn't, more then 4 strings are mainly used so players don't need to adjust tuning for certain songs. Example is metal, metal artists constantly need to change tuning on 4 string, so most use 5 so there is no need to change constantly. So to be fair, it requires less effort then 4 string.
@VigorousElf Well that too, but people around here are so lazy they just get a 5 string so they clan play open B instead of simply moving to the 7th fret on the E.
@TheBadAssKiller If you actually use a 5 string to its full use, then it serves a purpose. But most bass players around my area that play em just use em so they don't have to move their fingers as much. No need to get butt-hurt over my preference in bass guitars pal.
@TheBadAssKiller Sorry pal, but you're pseudo-intelligence doesn't impress me. I'm sorry that you're existence is so bland, and your bass skills so poor that you have to stalk me on youtube and talk shit. Why don't you just shut up and go play some bass...

You will lose some loudness - particularly in the low end. It makes the bridge pickup quite thin - but, does give you that Chris Squire kind of vibe.
