I know of no other example where an artist by speeding the tempo up from the original recording and making it more "lasvegasy" actually increases the level of emotional intensity. Because now there is a certain levity to the song. Astonishingly good song crafting by Webb, just... "I am so afraid of dying" says it all: no more war, please...
I had a boy-friend in the Navy SEALS around the time this song was released. Since everything was so highly confindential, & with him on Coronado Island, & me in MI we drifted apart. I still consider him the LOVE OF MY LIFE. This song wil always remind me of him. Still love you, & will always miss you Kurt!
I did not mean to imply that this was a protest song. It charted in early 1969 and there was no way you could hear it at that time and not be reminded of Vietnam, which was right in your face. Webb may not have written it about Nam but in April 1969 you couldn't hear "Clean my gun and dream of Galveston" and not relate to that war.
@anthonytorelli According to the BBC Radio 2 special on Glen Campbell, Webb did write this as a protest song, but Glen arranged it as it was, which made it a hit.
The song was widely, but erroneously, perceived as a protest song. The protagonist is a soldier, as shown in the original promo video with Campbell dressed up in a military outfit. Webb confirmed in interviews that he didn't have the Vietnam War in mind when he wrote the song, as he had imagined it taking place during a battle of the Spanish-American War, the time period when the City of Galveston reached its civic peak.
Song never fails to remind me of the incredible fun times I had in Galveston as a kid back in the '70s. My mom & step-dad lived in south Houston so Galveston was just a short trip down the Gulf Freeway.
@pompom11, yes you say it with "clearest". He had in his former years, let me say until 1980, that clearest voice of ALL in the world. Uncomparabable.Bought my first LP from him about 1980, named "Glen Campbell Anne Murray, in Bavaria, Germany. Since then I am a great fan of Glem / Jimmy Webb. He could also become a classic singer like Placideo Domingo or Luciano Pavarotti or José Carreras, he was able to be in the same league.
There's an amazing version of Galveston by a british band called 'Straw' It's the secret track at the end of their album 'Shoplifting'. Not uploaded on Youtube. Go out and buy the album.

One of twelve children born to a dirt-poor Scottish sharecropper in Arkansas, Cambell took on Jim Reeves’ mantle as the leading cross-over singer of pop and country music. Performing during the Vietnam years, his haunting classics “Galveston” and “Wichita Lineman” are rightly considered among the best ballads of the period. Unusually for a male soloist, he sang extremely well with women, notably Bobby Gentry, and his duet version of “Carolina on My Mind” with Linda Ronstadt is beyond compare.
We sure thought this song was about the Viet Nam War. Hotel Company, Second Battalion, Seventh Marine Regiment at Nong Son in the Rocket Belt South of Danang.
This classic hit reached #4 in 1969. (U.S. Billboard Hot 100) -- It also was a #1 Country hit for 3 weeks and a #1 Adult Contemporary hit for 6 weeks!
classy music. pleasing to the ear and tells a story. Some folks just can't appreciate anything that stimulates the gray matter. Assuming they have some.
When is Nashville gonna show some appreciation and have a "Tribute to Glen Campell" concert? C'mon people show some respect for the man who showed you how it was done!
I hate country music, I find it for the most part to be horrid. However...Artists like Glen Campbell , or Ronnie Milsap are nothing short of amazing...in fact their music does not really strike me as country that much. Just my opinion. Nice song, and thanks for the upload.
@arrowisb you are correct. it is not so much country as it is nashville trying to get on the top 40 as many country songs in the 70's and 80's had many cross overs into adult contemporary and pop.
@arrowisb , you express my sentiments exactly. I've always hated -- HATED -- country music, but I think Glen Campbell's great. I can listen to him any time.
This came out during America's war with Vietnam, and whether or not it was about the war, it came to be known as a song about that war. Very beautiful and poignant melody sung by the great Glen Campbell.
@007jimmymac It was actually meant to be about a guy in the Spanish-American War, but many associated it with Vietnam. However you interpret it is fine.
Glen Campbell did wonderful show 7-23-11, Mission Viejo, CA. said he's 75 and forgets things now. Music and voice sounded GREAT. 2 daughters w/ beautiful vocals. had 3 sons in band. played favorite songs including duet w/ daughter did Jackson by Johnny/June Cash. Gentle on my Mind, Wichita Line Man,S.Nights, Rhinestone Cowboy, ...Phoenix, Country Boy, Hank Williams Sr …, Rolling In My Sweet Baby’s Arms, Dueling Banjos w/ dtr Ashley, Elvis song, Righteous Bros.’ Song. THANKS Glen.

@statestreetoffices The book Jacob's Storm ( by Erik Larson ) covers it well. The lyrics writer of this song actually said he had Galveston, when it was at its peak just prior to the storm, in his mind when he wrote this song.
@statestreetoffices While the hurricane may have been horrid, this song is about a man going to fight in the Vietnam war and leaving Galvestion and his love.
Another #1 hit for Glen Campbell on the Country & Western charts. It was the 161st #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. It also went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts here and in Canada. It also hit #1 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks charts. Glen has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Let us all keep him in our prayers.

I know. I wish I could have lived 'back then' when mos of the good music was sung. This is a great song, there are very few new ones that I like. Everyone in my classroom thinks I'm crazy for not liking the new stuff, but is new always better and old worse? I think not.
Thank you, very much. This song is great, and though I'll get made fun of at school, I'll wear my Confederate Railroad t-shirt I have. Screw those who don't like it.
I have to say I'm a girl. Wish I could have been able to see his show. I read on Wikipedia thatr Jerry Reed had a show that lasted two whole episodes. I got in trouble though for being on wikipedia at school instead of playing games. Is that logical?
No one asked you, and I'm pretty sure in this lifetime that I'm only 13. That's what my birth certificate says, as well as common sense. Would you like some? Maybe someone can get you some. I was merely using my age to show that the REAL country music IS NOT dying out. Pardon me for thinking some people might like to hear that.
Oh Glen....remember this so much from my last year at school, and driving to our caravan at Aberystwyth. My mom and dad loved him! great listeneing to it again. Thanks for posting.
@calalilygirl Check out the Kieth Urban video link on this page. I think he did it well. He also mentioned the story behind the song. Good of him to do that. It is still hard to beat Glen's 1969 version.
The song is simple enough for any amateur to play on guitar and sing along. The meaning is what we give to ourselves, not necessarily what is thrust upon us. It doesn't have to be perfect to sing along with the music.
long, long not heart! listen to that voice! listen to that musical arrangement! He/they KNEW how to make great music! (and people happy! Thanks a lot for posting!
Thats something else than nowadays modern rap/crap and so on.
I remember as kid back in the 70's songs like this on the radio mom would have the doors and windows open to catch the slightest breeze in the Arizona summer. I would be in the front yard with my Tonka trucks and i could hear her singing with the radio as she did her house cleaning. A tear for the lost days of inocents and simplisity.
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful memory. My mom loved this stuff from Glen Campbell too and often sang while doing the housework. I was a child then and have many simple memories, as you did... eating rhubarb in the tire swing on hot summer days, hearing music like this on the radio, trading baseball cards, etc.
Now we find out we're losing Mr. Campbell to alzhheimer's disease. Sometimes we can get lost in nostalgia, but then again, sometimes we need to.
I WAS 19 WHEN THIS SONG CAME OUT IN EARLY '69. IT GREAT WAS THAN AND NOW. I WOULD SAY YES THIS SONG ABOUT A SOLDIER IN VIET NAM. I WAS IN THE ARMY '70-"71 DIDN'T MAKE TO TO NAM. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THANKS TO ALL THE GUYS THAT DID SERVICE THERE AND SORRY ABOUT A COUNTRY THAT DID THANK YOU WHEN YOU CAME HOME.
love of my life was in viet nam when this song came out - living about 50 miles from Galveston. He survived , thank God - but we didn't. still love him today wherever he is:=):=)
I was in Galveston a few years ago. There was a pan handler playing a mean tenor sax. I figured it would be fun to hear someone play this song on the island it was named for. He never played it before, so he took a few minutes to work through it. Then played an awesome solo! I slipped $5 in his bucket and thanked him. One of my favorite memories of that legendary island.. and this song.
@LateNightCable That's what a "panhandler" is.. as opposed to a beggar. Panhandlers are street artists, in other words, they do something for the money they are asking for.
@DrivinBarefoot I would like to clarify. A street artist is a street artist - I'm am one myself, and we are not referred to as panhandlers. I live in Key West Florida where we have plenty of both beggars, and street artists/performers - as well as rules against panhandling. And the beggars are always known as panhandlers. Any English dictionary will describe the term as to accost, or to beg.
A beautiful song - I was told that it was written during the American Civil War, as meaningful during that terrible conflict, I am sure, as it was during the horrors of Vietnam.
even though the song was recorded during the Viet Nam War, and everyone thought it was about a GI, Jimmy wrote the song while he was hunting. he was never in the Viet Nam war.
I have to know...did he come from Nam and was she waiting? You can't tell this story and not end it!!!! Does anyone know if the song writer come home to his girl?
@LivInAwe There is some debate about whether it was about Vietnam or about any war. There were no further verses, so we do not know if the singer returns home. There are many war songs like that. There is the lighter song from WWII, I believe, called "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree with Anyone Else but Me." We do not know if the solder makes it home to sit under the apple tree with his girl again. We don't know if he got to take that "Sentimental Journey".
@ChicagoSouthDan I have to think the line "while I watch the cannons flashing" is a war reference. I remember when this song came out. I was in junior highschool, and it was a big hit. I was a dedicated hard rock fan, but still liked this tune.
@cypresscoach Very true. The song is about someone who is away at a war. LivinAwe asked if the singer came home from Vietnam and I said I did not know if the song is about Vietnam or if the singer makes it home.
I grew up listening to all the metal music from the 70s, 80s and early 90s like Judas Priest and Slayer. I still love that stuff, but I'm also a huge fan of the guitar style and vocals of Glen Campbell. The man is a virtuoso, and he's also a badass with several run-ins with the law. I love this song, as the lyrics are dark and cryptic much like Metallica's Disposable Heroes: another song about how Americans shit on their vets. Respect!

The song is still poigniant for this generation of fine young deployed men. I would like REM or someone similar to redo it.

@2300Kenzie I really like it and maybe they should just play this classic more often. Could anyone do this as much justice? If so please try.
calalilygirl 7 months ago
@calalilygirl Check out the Kieth Urban video link on this page. I think he did it well. He also mentioned the story behind the song. Good of him to do that. It is still hard to beat Glen's 1969 version.
The song is simple enough for any amateur to play on guitar and sing along. The meaning is what we give to ourselves, not necessarily what is thrust upon us. It doesn't have to be perfect to sing along with the music.
I am glad you like it.

I remember as kid back in the 70's songs like this on the radio mom would have the doors and windows open to catch the slightest breeze in the Arizona summer. I would be in the front yard with my Tonka trucks and i could hear her singing with the radio as she did her house cleaning. A tear for the lost days of inocents and simplisity.
justoldhank 8 months ago 3
@justoldhank
Sometimes we can get lost in nostalgia, but then again, sometimes we need to.

love of my life was in viet nam when this song came out - living about 50 miles from Galveston.

DrivinBarefoot 9 months ago 3
@DrivinBarefoot Cool story. Though, if he was playing music for money, I wouldn't call him a panhandler exactly, lol.
LateNightCable 9 months ago
@LateNightCable That's what a "panhandler" is.. as opposed to a beggar. Panhandlers are street artists, in other words, they do something for the money they are asking for.
DrivinBarefoot 9 months ago
@DrivinBarefoot I would like to clarify. A street artist is a street artist - I'm am one myself, and we are not referred to as panhandlers. I live in Key West Florida where we have plenty of both beggars, and street artists/performers - as well as rules against panhandling. And the beggars are always known as panhandlers. Any English dictionary will describe the term as to accost, or to beg.

A beautiful song - I was told that it was written during the American Civil War, as meaningful during that terrible conflict, I am sure, as it was during the horrors of Vietnam.

even though the song was recorded during the Viet Nam War, and everyone thought it was about a GI, Jimmy wrote the song while he was hunting. he was never in the Viet Nam war.
michaeldeannelson 10 months ago
I have to know...did he come from Nam and was she waiting? You can't tell this story and not end it!!!! Does anyone know if the song writer come home to his girl?
LivInAwe 10 months ago
@LivInAwe There is some debate about whether it was about Vietnam or about any war. There were no further verses, so we do not know if the singer returns home. There are many war songs like that. There is the lighter song from WWII, I believe, called "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree with Anyone Else but Me." We do not know if the solder makes it home to sit under the apple tree with his girl again. We don't know if he got to take that "Sentimental Journey".
ChicagoSouthDan 10 months ago
@ChicagoSouthDan I have to think the line "while I watch the cannons flashing" is a war reference. I remember when this song came out. I was in junior highschool, and it was a big hit. I was a dedicated hard rock fan, but still liked this tune.
cypresscoach 9 months ago

Respect!
