@ichiman14 It's a little bit out of context, this video is more than 3 years old, and was made to show an upcoming release of freeBSD. it was installed as a guest OS in vmware on my debian machine. I just picked between KDE and GNOME because everybody knew them...
All I see in this video is GNOME, the default DE for many linux distributions.
Since you can't actually spell "Linux" I assume you don't use it much which basically reinforces the fact that you have no clue what the difference is between KDE, GNOME, XFCE and other DE's.
I was carefully reading the comments on this video, . But things are quite simple.
For those who wants to just use their PC as users and for those who don't like to do much research but needs everything in their hand WINDOWS is the best.
For those who wish to learn something with some hard work and patience and finally achieve wat they need with their own effort and for those who needs a very powerful operating system (ie) for servers, for hackers etc, Unix is the best.
lol wow I am a computer systems senior engineer and i can safelly say that anyone that thinks windows is better then linux or freebsd in general should stay away from a computer!!!!!!!!!! SO FUCK OFF HATERS UNIX/LINUX PROGRAMING FOR LIFE FUCK WINDOWS!
You want to know why it is slow? I know for a fact he's running it on a VM, and VM's are significantly slower. Also take into consideration, his hardware. I run FreeBSD on a partition and it is faster than this. If it was installed onto an actual HDD the boot would have been much faster.
true... i've been telling people exactly this for over a year, still there are people that start posting negative comments regarding the speed. The main reason i made this video a long time ago was to show an upcoming release... It's debian + VMware on a machine that is over 5 years old, so i would rather consider calling the system "fast"
true... Debian + VMware => Freebsd ;-). I made this video a long time ago while this wasn't even a full release candidate to show the stability of the system.... Looks a bit stupid now ofcourse
i thought it would have been like Windows or more likely Ubuntu, you know you turn it on the GUI starts right than, instead of you having to type some random command.
well... If you search youtube for freebsd + beryl you might find some nice eyecandy for this OS... The thing is that i only like to work with a basic OS... I like it to be as fast as possible, normally i don't load a window system at all, i just work from the terminal
I am having a huge problem with freebsd. I finished the installation and rebooted. I login with thr "root" password and type in startx and it says invalad command. What is the problem? Any hep would be aprecciated thank you
hmm... I don't see anybody claiming that it's faster than linux... Not in de description, not in the comments (a lot of people claim that it's faster than windows... In my personal experience this is true).
I just uploaded this vid more than half a year ago to show everybody the upcoming release of BSD (at this moment, it's a production release), not to start an argument between linux and BSD entousiasts.
i personally think it all depends on how much you know about linux/bsd and how much time you are willing to invest in your installation... I guess a 'sloppy' install by a beginning BSD user will be a lot slower than a from-scratch newly compiled gentoo installation by an expert user
So, WinXP takes 3 minutes on machines that boot 'Nix in 1 to 1.5 minutes! Remember to count all those Anti-Virus protection programs in the Windows boot up, as it can't really function safely without them!

mabey its a live cd?
ipodjolo 3 years ago
Maybe that depends on hardware?
stayhidden 3 years ago 5
Besides depending on the hardware, FreeBSD is primarily designed for servers, where boot up time is not that important as in a desktop computer.
Servers are not rebooted as often as desktops so it's more important to do all the necesary checking for the server to startup ok.
hotflyback 3 years ago 4
just use windows server 2003,2008 or linux what is the point of the OS
bbaction101 3 years ago
The point is that it's better than linux(and definetly better than windows) in some ways. It's not perfect, but does some jobs faster...

it's that slow because it's an emulation... It's an os running inside an other booted OS... On an old pentium III.
On my server, i have BSD 5.5 on a pentium II with 64 Mb ram, and it's a lot faster ;-) BUT, it's hard to record this. It's a lot easyer to record a booting OS from VMware.

1 minute of booting up. 1 fucking minute.
LessthanJake14 4 years ago
I'm not sure if I saw that right (I don't use Gnome,) but why do you have to login twice? Once on the machine, and once on the desktop manager.
Weird
bass1024 5 years ago
I don't HAVE to ;)
if I add the text 'gnome_enable="YES"' to my /etc/rc.conf file, gnome automatically starts and i don't have to login twice.
The reason i don't do this is because i don't always want to use gnome, and it makes the booting process slower...
jvzottejos 5 years ago
BSD's only excuse for this slow booting is if you have a machine from the 80's
munkiiii 5 years ago
Well, in this case it's slow because it's installed on a VMware emulation loaded on my debian machine ;)
I just posted it because i wanted to show everybody that the upcoming release candidate (RC2) is pretty stable already...
jvzottejos 5 years ago
Slow booting doesn't matter if your machine is up 6 months in a row.
