  • look like ubuntu 10.04

  • @ichiman14 because xfce sucks. no offence...

  • @ichiman14 xfce is worse then gnome, imo

  • This is freebsd? all it is is a linux....

  • This reminds me of a cheap version of Mac os

  • This reminds me of a cheapo version of Mac is

  • @ichiman14: "Why not xfce?" is bad question. No one has to use xfce. Maybe you think you are very good because you don't use KDE/GNOME? ROTFL.

  • Hmmm... That helped me alot!

  • LOLZ Gnome!

I think only UBUNTU USED THAT

Ps it looks like my old ubuntu style!

    Ps2- IT SUCKS!!!

  • @Keeltsies1000 Man, Fedora too, debian too. Gnome is a desctop neviroment for Unix/Like OSs, not just for ubuntu

  • @ichiman14 It's a little bit out of context, this video is more than 3 years old, and was made to show an upcoming release of freeBSD. it was installed as a guest OS in vmware on my debian machine. I just picked between KDE and GNOME because everybody knew them...

  • FreeBSD, and Linux look the same ...

  • Homo this is in a VM

  • I just made my Linux a gaming Linux! WOOT LINUX 4 LIFE!!!

  • A gaming Linux? Hmm...

  • @robdun Linus n gaymes? dats nevr ben herd ov

  • i with heydude

    linux (ubuntu) and windows fanboy

  • all i see is a knockoff of lunix

  • Unix was out way before Linux. Go fuck yo'self.

All I see in this video is GNOME, the default DE for many linux distributions.

Since you can't actually spell "Linux" I assume you don't use it much which basically reinforces the fact that you have no clue what the difference is between KDE, GNOME, XFCE and other DE's.

  • I agree LUNIX.

  • sorry mate no such thing really of a "knock off of linux" open source software. all there is to say

  • I was carefully reading the comments on this video, . But things are quite simple.

For those who wants to just use their PC as users and for those who don't like to do much research but needs everything in their hand WINDOWS is the best.

For those who wish to learn something with some hard work and patience and finally achieve wat they need with their own effort and for those who needs a very powerful operating system (ie) for servers, for hackers etc, Unix is the best.

  • lol wow I am a computer systems senior engineer and i can safelly say that anyone that thinks windows is better then linux or freebsd in general should stay away from a computer!!!!!!!!!! SO FUCK OFF HATERS UNIX/LINUX PROGRAMING FOR LIFE FUCK WINDOWS!

  • "SO FUCK OFF HATERS UNIX/LINUX PROGRAMMING FOR LIFE FUCK WINDOWS!" said the computer systems senior engineer... xD

  • i know what this is... its like window had a baby and wanted it to be as cool as linux... but it still sucked any way

  • this is like a retarded version of Ubuntu

  • Definately retarded, free BSD and linux sucks.

  • You want to know why it is slow? I know for a fact he's running it on a VM, and VM's are significantly slower. Also take into consideration, his hardware. I run FreeBSD on a partition and it is faster than this. If it was installed onto an actual HDD the boot would have been much faster.

  • true... i've been telling people exactly this for over a year, still there are people that start posting negative comments regarding the speed. The main reason i made this video a long time ago was to show an upcoming release... It's debian + VMware on a machine that is over 5 years old, so i would rather consider calling the system "fast"

  • it looks like amodern copy of System 7.5...LOL

  • @IAINMAN96

    LOL!!! :D

  • I've just finished reading The Unix Haters Handbook.

  • mabey its a live cd?

  • Maybe that depends on hardware?

  • Besides depending on the hardware, FreeBSD is primarily designed for servers, where boot up time is not that important as in a desktop computer.

Servers are not rebooted as often as desktops so it's more important to do all the necesary checking for the server to startup ok.

  • just use windows server 2003,2008 or linux what is the point of the OS

  • The point is that it's better than linux(and definetly better than windows) in some ways. It's not perfect, but does some jobs faster...

  • Bullcrap, windows is better than linsucks.

  • Don't you mean windoze? Eeeeeeeeeeveryyything is soooo slooooooow.

  • Vista is fine.

  • windows 7 is better than vista and a little better than xp.. i've used all 3

    i'm a Windows & Linux fanboy

  • but windows vista sucks.

  • I bet you haven't even used windows vista before.

  • I have & he's right. It Sucks!

  • malisimo tu video. hace parecer un o.s lentisimo !!!!

  • If you want a reply, please write in english or dutch please (french is also an option, but my reply will be in english anyways)...

  • He said:

"Your video is rubbish. It looks like a really slow OS !!!"

My Spanish comes in handy every now and again for translating Spanish trolls.

  • eda

  • What's wrong with your resolution?

    It's like 480x600 lol!

you can really crank it up to a high res, maximize desktop space or/and have multiple desktops : )

    Freebsd is magic!

  • to tell you the truth, i didn't even bother... I usually don't use a window manager anyways (i mostly just work from the terminal)

  • It seems like it is just being installed in vmware.. lol

  • true... Debian + VMware => Freebsd ;-). I made this video a long time ago while this wasn't even a full release candidate to show the stability of the system.... Looks a bit stupid now ofcourse

  • i thought it would have been like Windows or more likely Ubuntu, you know you turn it on the GUI starts right than, instead of you having to type some random command.

  • it is like that... If you want to ;)

I usually only use the terminal, so there is no point in loading a full window system like GNOME or KDE as default every time i start the system...

  • you should try dwm window manager it allows console users like us to have X running for videos, pictures and firefox of course

  • thanks for the tip... I'll try it on my desktop machine :)

  • looks pretty shitty.

Sorry guys but today eyecandys are Importend too

  • well... If you search youtube for freebsd + beryl you might find some nice eyecandy for this OS... The thing is that i only like to work with a basic OS... I like it to be as fast as possible, normally i don't load a window system at all, i just work from the terminal

  • I am having a huge problem with freebsd. I finished the installation and rebooted. I login with thr "root" password and type in startx and it says invalad command. What is the problem? Any hep would be aprecciated thank you

  • sorry with the typo's damn keybord keys are sticking

  • you need to compile xorg from ports /usr/port/x11/xorg && make install clean

  • well just try it.

  • It Is Gnome Desktop

  • ¡That is a modern operative UI!

    ¡What a GUY!

    XD

really, I am waiting to see the desktopbsd version based on this realease of freebsd.

  • Sooooooooooooooooooooo, uhhhhhh, soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, FreeBSD is supposedly faster than linux(and just what distro?)?

  • hmm... I don't see anybody claiming that it's faster than linux... Not in de description, not in the comments (a lot of people claim that it's faster than windows... In my personal experience this is true).

I just uploaded this vid more than half a year ago to show everybody the upcoming release of BSD (at this moment, it's a production release), not to start an argument between linux and BSD entousiasts.

  • Oh man i'm not tryin to start an arguement its just I saw on their website that its indeed faster than linux.

  • i personally think it all depends on how much you know about linux/bsd and how much time you are willing to invest in your installation... I guess a 'sloppy' install by a beginning BSD user will be a lot slower than a from-scratch newly compiled gentoo installation by an expert user

  • Pardon my ignorance but isn't BSD Unix based? so wouldn't FreeBSD kinda like being another Linux distro?

  • Anything is faster than Windows, even Mac OSX or any Linux distro...

  • I install Free BSD to my Intel Pentium D 2.8 dual core and 1 gb of ram yes it's slow.

  • I don't use Vmware.

  • I installed Free BSD my Intel Pentium D 2.8 dual core and 1 gb of ram yes it's slow.

  • if you make your own kernel you get half the bootuptime...

  • So, WinXP takes 3 minutes on machines that boot 'Nix in 1 to 1.5 minutes! Remember to count all those Anti-Virus protection programs in the Windows boot up, as it can't really function safely without them!

  • You droped your kernel! haaaaaa made you look! ---->Viva NT kernel<----

Because other kernels valen mierda! X X

    XXXX x

    xxxxx xxx

  • it's that slow because it's an emulation... It's an os running inside an other booted OS... On an old pentium III.

On my server, i have BSD 5.5 on a pentium II with 64 Mb ram, and it's a lot faster ;-) BUT, it's hard to record this. It's a lot easyer to record a booting OS from VMware.

I posted this video a long time ago to show everybody that the upcoming release was pretty neat, and to show people that it's actually a good time to convert their windows boxes into opensource-boxes

  • 1 minute of booting up. 1 fucking minute.

  • I'm not sure if I saw that right (I don't use Gnome,) but why do you have to login twice? Once on the machine, and once on the desktop manager.

    Weird

  • I don't HAVE to ;)

if I add the text 'gnome_enable="YES"' to my /etc/rc.conf file, gnome automatically starts and i don't have to login twice.

The reason i don't do this is because i don't always want to use gnome, and it makes the booting process slower...

  • BSD's only excuse for this slow booting is if you have a machine from the 80's

  • Well, in this case it's slow because it's installed on a VMware emulation loaded on my debian machine ;)

I just posted it because i wanted to show everybody that the upcoming release candidate (RC2) is pretty stable already...

  • Slow booting doesn't matter if your machine is up 6 months in a row.
