The Byzantine Empire is such an interesting topic that does not get enough coverage in modern times. Especially in the schools. A lot of attention is given to the Classical Greek period, but not to the Byzantine. Anyway, great video and thanks for posting!
@ilovethe80snole Western Europe is responsible for the downgrading of the Christian Roman Empire. Its mentality is based on Charlemagne's ideology, according to which the Franks are the direct descendants of the ancient greek and ancient roman world/culture/spirit. The Franks accused the Christian Romans as heretics & tried to usurp even their name. Finally the insidious conquest of Constantinople by the Crusaders & other similar events created "qualms" & guilt to the Europeans towards Byzantium
When the Catcolichs took out the old Roman Empire the Turks wander in to Europe and the muslims religon become great. So its thanks to Christians today Muslims is so big =)
5:33......."Igniting the Renaissence". true, Byzantine-Roman art did partially fuel the Renaissence. but dont forget the Arabic-Berber influences in Islamic Spain! >>>mathematics, sciences, improved argiculture, improved architecture, improved music, delicate fine art, a Visigothic hill fort full of dogs and illiterates was nuthin compared to the beauty of Islamic Spain!
Nonetheless; The Greek scholar refugees who had fled to Italy bringing their books written in their native languages that had made the classical science approachable to public. Arabs considered the berbers as second rate ppl (till this day); it's funny that you call the Visigoth who had their own cultures and arts as dogs; this gives us a hint of the so called beauty of "Islamic Spain" I wonder if that beauty that you admire so much includes Jyzia ?
kanibal.........its not the Visigoths themselves who were dogs, and yes theyre Germanic art is great, but, they were illiterate, even though they were semi-Christians. and the warriors tended to drink alot and be thuggish. compare that society to the calm, clean halls of an Islamic center of learning. or a Byzantine center of learning. and what of all the artistic, musical, and agricultural improvements?.........what is Jyzia? was this a battle? a massacre? a form of Sharia?
I'm not an orthodox christian (I'm Protestant) but I've always admired Orthodox art, churches and personally as a Believer find the Byzantine period of history fascinating and greatly appreciate it.
You're misjudging me. And you're being a poor example of someone who claims to follow Christ with your cursing and swearing. I know Orthodox believers who would never curse and swear like you. I feel you are being a poor example of a Christian and Orthodoxy. I don't need to be Orthodox to follow Jesus Christ and serve the Ancient of Days. I would invite you to go and think seriously about your life and conduct and speech. May the Lord Jesus bless you richly.
i am not a beliver i am an christian ortodox by the papers not by he mind ok? and cursins is nt suck a bad thing especially when it is not in my native language remember the bizantine empire is the most longevive empire of all times so dont come in here talking about how fascinating it is it is more than that and i dont get it....why 3 thumbs down? .....kids..
I don't disagree about anything you say regarding how great the Byzantines were or how glorious the city was. It's indisputable. Cursing is cursing in any language. Jesus Himself said that unless you repent and are born again you will never see the Kingdom of God. Being born again is the only kind of Christian the Son of God talked about. He said nothing about any papers. Have you given your heart to the King of Kings and asked forgiveness for your sins?
You claim to be a true defender of Christianity but don't believe it yourself? Kind of contradictory, isn't it? Why defend what you don't believe? As for gays, all sexual immorality is sin, whether gay or straight. As for events like the Inquistion, that was definitely, "misguiged". I agree. As for the Crusades, I'm not sure. Political, yes, especially the 2nd and 3rd. The first, I'm not sure. Maybe it's time Muslims apologized for taking over Constantinople for no reason.
your logic is quite ridiculous my friend. You claim that for one to hold Christianity is to hold more than ignorance...
*In order for an ideal to be held of ignorance, there must be counter evidence with factual support. Owing to the scienticfic limitations of human beings, you can not possibly possess such information; your argument is thus illogical.
*It seems that ignorance turns out to be a luxury you can ( and do) afford after all
your baseless rants do nothing more than solitify my argument. you provide the tired discourse of those who neglect Christianity, yet you are unable to provide scientific evidence which would support. the simple fact that you disagree with the crusades, or the Christian outlook of homosexuality, is a far cry from debunking the religion Im afraid. Your disapproval, at the end of the day, remains only your disaprroval, and nothing more.
whats more, the crusades were the actions of men, not God....
When in pertinence to homosexuality, regardless of religion or the concept of a god, the act is in its utmost a defiance of nature. there is no speculation as to this, the sole purpose of sexual activity is to reproduce, homosexuality, given its inability to reproduce, is nothing more than primal lust. Now, unless you have scientific evidence( again, not simply what you think), you have no argument
what scientific argument have you given me?the fact that animals are known to engage in homosexual activity is only proof that homosexuality is primal lust...however, i do appreciate you arguing against yourself, quite entertaining. at any rate, i am the one here who called for science, you on the other hand were unable to bring forth scientific arguments, and thus attempted to discredit me by writing me off as a fanatic.
interesting in that i never told you what religion i was, or even if i had one. i simply wished to hold a logical debate here. you have done an excellent job in showing that you are the true fanatic. well done
repeat yourself a hundred times and it comes to the same...
*chromosome attributes have no bearing on sexual behavior; a sad theory, unscientific, and ridiculous...which is why i imagine you hold it as truth.
*"a fanatic believes in something with his mind,body...well i dont"
- i have touble deciphering your poor english, but assume here you took an unsuccessful attempt at sarcasm and cloked aim, as in implying that Christians mistakengly assume the role of believing with the mind and body
there is no doubt that many Christians live by blind faith, however, i have met many who believe in God as a result of the absolutions of chemical science ( true science, not theoretical as you embrace), and thus come to Christianity due to it's broad context in archaeological validity.
*you are like most atheists/agnostics, claiming you live by rational thought and science, yet when the debate requires you to base your arguments on such, you fall ill to success
*if i am to understand that you are not an atheist/agnostic, it would have to be from some other source than the discussion we have just had. you are correct though, there is no need to continue this, i am a man of logic and science, most people today are not. we have nothing more to say to one another.
If I say it is fascinating that means I respect it and agree with you that it was great and glorious. As someone who is a history buff that means I find it worthy of study and respect.
No drugs. And thanks for the correction. And at least you're being truthful. On your very first post you said, "It is we the Orthodox who are the true defenders of Christianity." You included yourself, right? I respect the Orthodox Church also. Living for God in your daily life as the Lord Jesus teaches is the most important thing. The "gay priests" you mention will burn in Hell.
(cont'd) Remember what Paul said: "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." May I ask, where are you from?
well i told you why i respect the bizntine church right?
since its theyre last legacy..
and i what i hate most about religious fanatcs like you is that you neve respect others
no matter what relgion or sexual orientation... and if the kingdom of god is as it is said it is
and if it is neccesarry in order to go there to visit the churc daily if posible and to pray with the prayers that you give me(not you ) then i say let god refuse me not the church........like excomunication
@joel1923 There are two identical statues one in Athens, one in the medieval town and castle of Mystras in Southern Greece. The home town of the Emperor and where he was crowned Emperor. The spot where he stood during his crowning is marked with a Imperial double headed eagle plaque. I have stood there myself, it was a bone chilling experience.
It's not the Albanian eagle, it's the Byzantine imperial emblem, the double headed eagle representing imperial power on both East and West. The red backround was adopted in days of war. After the fall of the Empire the emblem was adopted by many balkan mainly nations and Russia all of them under the direct cultural influence of Byzantium (Greece,Serbia, Albania). The double headed eagle with the yellow backround is the emblem of Greek Orthodox Church and the coat of arms of the Greek Army.

yes
and am i not right?
look arround
christianity is a religion like any other made long ago and that thruth the help of the roman empire got stronger
i holds a lot of resonance with the muslims and with many other religions
because all of them have the same origins
and it is not even by far the oldest religion of all times
you want evidence with factual suport? CRUSADES INQUIZITION HOMOSEXALITY( SATAN OFF COURSE)
to ignorre evolution and diversity is a sin
