After hearing Kogan's version, I simply can't listen to anyone else's version anymore. Maybe if Sarah Chang play this piece in a skimpy bikini then I'd consider listening to her version instead, but until then, Kogan's Catibile reign supreme.
@chavohawk do you mean his bow technique? the quick vibrato and portamento (the finger slides) are from the russian school, dating to wieniawski, who was closely associated with the french violin school (as opposed to the german school...less vibrato, more robust sound). the bow grip is a variation on the russian hold, using primarily the first and middle finger to control the bow. seidel, heifetz, elman, korsakov, kogan, zimbalist, all used this bow hold. not too shabby a group of players!!
This is as good as it gets. They don't make musicians like Leonid Kogan any more, unfortunately. The world in which he and others of his generation flourished is gone. But at least we have marvellous recordings such as this one as consolation.
Personally I find technically good musically-gifted violinist such as Kogan, Kavakos who don't display emotion in their face/sound to be more moving. Calm water is more sinking than turbulent water, says an Indonesian proverb.
what a beautiful interpretation.. the only think I don´t understand is why he moves his face that way .. but well... that´s irrelevant.. excellent music..

What I liked best about this interprataion is the finale, especially the speed and smoothness of that scale at the end. And that little pause at 2:37, it's just a little thing, but it makes my heart quiver, it's done so well and the piano crescendoing there really adds to it.
Anyway, I don't see why everyone is so quick to bash certain artists. All of these musicians are magnificent. Kogan, Chang, Hahn, they all have the skills just different interpretations.
This piece is one of my favourites ever. I've downloaded about 6 different versions (and counting) on my mp3 player. I just love listening different people's interpretations of it. The only thing I disliked about this interpretation is that it was a bit slow, but other than that it was beautiful. I read that Kogan used all steel strings on his violin, and as a result, he had a very bright tone, and I definitely feel it here.

Beautifully played! This is a beautiful piece, and both the violinist and the pianist made it really really good! I wish I played it like that. Looks like I have some practicing to do =P
sarah chang's version is so intense i wasnt able to feel the notes. this one is superb because you'll feel every note with perfect intensity ad emotion.
I like Kogan's version hands down! he really puts a lot into this, i didnt get the same vibe from chang. Just my opinion though they both are very good, i just like Kogan's more. He also seems more commited
@indiesk8r Do you have any conception of music, kogan is in a league of masters such as oistrakh and heifetz, and sarah chang is completely in a lower league of violinist that the idiots of modern society have brought into the spotlight, my god!!!
@dachoirboi Excuse me... But, why bash modern violinists? Violinists like Sarah Chang, Hilary Hahn and Vadim Repin are nearly as masterful as the likes of Leonid Kogan, Jascha Heifetz and Yehudi Menuhin. Yehudi Menuhin even called Sarah Chang "the most, perfect, ideal violinist I have ever heard" and Repin "Is simply one of the best and perfect violinists that I have ever had the chance to hear".Yehudi Menuhin is in the same league of masters and he respected the "lower league” so why not you?
I think Kogan's version has a lot more contrast than everybody else's, which actually makes it "feel" more intense than even Sarah Chang's version to me. (Although she appears to be playing with more intensity.) I really like how Kogan handled the C#'s at 1:30.

I'd always thought David Oistrakh play any violin music the best. But as far as this Cantabile is concerned, Kogan is the best! I almost cry as I hear this music. It is so touching. I am in seventh heaven!
I really enjoy Chang's version oft his piece. I always admire her vibrato...then I realised I was focusing on her vibrato and not the piece. She overdoes it at times and her Cantabile does not compare to Kogan's. I agree, Chang does not have the fire that Kogan has and it may well be a matter of maturity as well.
I find it funny that people believe their opinions are facts and yell at those that differ.
One of the most beautiful things about music is that people can listen to the same performance/piece of music and take different things from it. Please, don't hinder such a thing.
Listening to both versions respectively, I like Kogan's tempo better in that it draws out the casual parts of the piece a bit better. I think Kogan's vibrato is a little better in accord with the variation of dynamic in the soft spectrum. He also really works his dynamics to emphasize the notes that he deems MOST dramatic. However, in respect of k034nb02's opinion, one might choose to see that Paganini himself might have played it more like chang considering his reputed style.
I think if Paganini could comment on Chang's version he would say something to the effect of "very good, but there was no 'fire' ". Kogan on the other hand always seems to bring plenty of "fire" to any piece he plays. Especially this one.
In that respect, I think Kogan's version is more likely to have been how Paganini would have played it.
In MY opinion, why I believe so many people watch Sarah Chang's version more than this one is because her aggressive vibrato and huge difference of dynamics matches VERY well to THIS song.
However, Kogan's style matches with other songs, such as paganini's.
Because, there are some songs Sarah Chang can play with greater passion, such as this one, Cantabile. Leonid Kogan was known to play songs in a straightforward manner, which doesn't fit with this song. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge, huge Leonid Kogan fan; but I must admit, Sarah Chang plays this more suitably.
Straightforward manner ? This is the culmination of the russian school, the absolute top , you can't compare , even smell both careers , I respect Chang as a person and as an artist , but , Kogan won the best competition in the world while living in USSR, started teaching in the best conservatory of the world at that moment ( Moscow ) shortly after and he had time to practice 10 hours a day as he usually did. HOW CAN WE EVEN COMPARE ?? THIS MAN WAS A SUPER HERO OF MUSIC AND VIOLIN
It all came from Auer ok, but I'm talking about the second half of the XX century, Heifetz in my opinion belonged to the first part. ( In fact it did, lol )
Interesting that you comment on the political system. I've often wondered how big role this plays. I'm well accuainted with (ex-)Soviet Union and I know there was more of a "practice or die" attitude there. On the other hand, you dont want to think that music should depend on politics... but yes, unfortunately it does. However I'm certain that Kogan would be as good if he'd grewn up in lets say Germany.
heiufetz practised like crazy- it was kogan who had the joy of living. kogan was a very nice gentleman, heifetz was also a gentleman- but i prefered always kogan as if it was about musicianship, but i notice that one actually also prefer kogan if it was about technicianship, kogan was not less technician on violin, as heifetz- besides for me kogan plays much warmer.
" It was Kogan who had the joy of living "... Well being forced by the KGB to do things u didn't want to....if that was the joy of living my name is Mary Poppins
well, he wasnt forced to do anything, KGB has done things if you wanted to get out of the State. this was not the case by kogan. he was a monument of the Soviets. he had a great reputation and everybody loved him. if there was somebody in CCCP who had rest from being forced to do anything- this was Kogan. Your prejudicy is wrong.
KGB???? maybe he was just a great violinist, maybe he was one of the greatest. What the heck would the KGB have to do with it.That is like saying the KGB made fish swim.
I don't know and I don't give a fuck if he was a spy or whatever. I just care that he is an outstanding musician and that this performance has truly touched my soul.
@sechenry6 I will answer for the last time, your comment reflects a obvious ignorance about soviet sociopolitical system, artist were used by the state for political purposes.
Great reputation and everybody loved him are things that people in the KGB didn't care a fuck, they were powerful and rich, that's true but at the moment of politics they were puppets as everyone else.
how do you know that kogan was forced by the KGB to do things he didn't want to?. Was kogan a spy or something? i mean that's like saying that the CIA forced hirally hann to play for them or something crazy like that. sechenry6 is right, you are remarkably wrong informed
Wow, well, appart from not knowing things that are a public secret you obviously ignore the fact that soviet musicians were used as postmans in soviet times to bring important documents to russians spies all over the world during the cold war and they were forced to collaborate with the KGB for this. It is quite obvious you don't know a shit about this. Go at least watch the documentary : David Oistrakh, artist of the people ? To understand a little bit what am I talking about.
I heard these stories too. It is troubling to hear, but when you hear the same stories from numerous different people, then there must be some truth to them.
And by the way, if you're a violinist and if you've studied in Europe is not difficult to find people which studied with Kogan in Moscow , not at all, ex-soviet teachers are everywhere.
Very beautiful. I played this piece with my friend. But I play the guitar instead of the piano. I think the piece is even more beautiful when played with violin and guitar! Hope to find that too on YouTube.
If have learned to love the art of Leonid Kogan thanks to you and others on YouTube. By the way . I also think that Joshua Bell is great in this piece

Honestly, who the hell goes on Youtube to pick apart musicians note by note? Intonation is relative, i.e. being in tune with the note before it and in accordance with the overall key. If every violinist played exactly in tune, you'd have a very boring performance. Try tuning your A string to a D major chord instead of D minor and you'll notice the A is slightly sharper with the D major chord (due to the F#). He's not out of tune at all.

I'd always thought David Oistrakh play any violin music the best. But as far as this Cantabile is concerned, Kogan is the best! I almost cry as I hear this music. It is so touching. I am in seventh heaven!
tokyodo555 2 years ago
Oistrakh had the artistic humility to admit that Kogan was superior. (this is not me saying this, this is OISTRAKH)

Where did you get that information ?!

so much expression and emotion absolutely perfection like poulha said.

passionate! :)

I really enjoy Chang's version oft his piece. I always admire her vibrato...then I realised I was focusing on her vibrato and not the piece. She overdoes it at times and her Cantabile does not compare to Kogan's. I agree, Chang does not have the fire that Kogan has and it may well be a matter of maturity as well.
quietmountain8 2 years ago 5
i can't agree more. but Sarah is great to SOME degree. she'll NEVER reach heifetz and all those other masters though.
jazzecca2007 2 years ago
A volcano of emotion, controlled into perfection. This is - for me - the essence of music.
poulha 2 years ago 6
I find it funny that people believe their opinions are facts and yell at those that differ.
One of the most beautiful things about music is that people can listen to the same performance/piece of music and take different things from it. Please, don't hinder such a thing.
ladyviolinist 2 years ago
why that thing is beautifull? it would be more beautifull if everyone could hear exactly the same feeling the artist want to give to us
lasjaumach 2 years ago
But that's impossible. People are built differently from one another, and each of us has a unique emotional response to...well, everything.
ladyviolinist 2 years ago
You mis-understand me.
I never compared Kogan to Sarah.
Did I ever?
Read my previous comments more carefully.
I only explained why people watch Sarah's version more than Kogan's.
Did I ever said "Sarah blah blah better blah blah Kogan"?
NO.
Also, Sarah is amazing. You are so ignorant. How dare you call her a commercial bitch?
Just wow.
k0r34nb02 2 years ago
My two cents--
Listening to both versions respectively, I like Kogan's tempo better in that it draws out the casual parts of the piece a bit better.
PaperGrape 2 years ago
I think if Paganini could comment on Chang's version he would say something to the effect of "very good, but there was no 'fire' ". Kogan on the other hand always seems to bring plenty of "fire" to any piece he plays. Especially this one.
In that respect, I think Kogan's version is more likely to have been how Paganini would have played it.
cgijfk 2 years ago 6
Eh, I thought about that, but I think Chang's version has plenty fo fire...imho
PaperGrape 2 years ago
I think his tone is just better. A much better sounding violin and more mature player makes the difference.
GeniusHaydn 2 years ago 2
@cgijfk I couldn't agree more

Yes, I know Kogan is out of this planet.
Yes, I know there is beauty in simplicity.
Yes Kogan is the best.
BUT
In MY opinion, why I believe so many people watch Sarah Chang's version more than this one is because her aggressive vibrato and huge difference of dynamics matches VERY well to THIS song.
However, Kogan's style matches with other songs, such as paganini's.
I am NOT hating on Kogan.
In fact, I like Kogan better than Sarah.. :]
k0r34nb02 2 years ago 3
i know you like him better than Chang. We just needed to hear you say it!! Your point is well taken nonetheless.
calloffthedogs 2 years ago
why are folks listening to Sarah Chang at a rate of nearly 5 to 1 over Kogan when Sarah cannot match the Great Leonid in any respect?????
calloffthedogs 2 years ago 20
Because, there are some songs Sarah Chang can play with greater passion, such as this one, Cantabile. Leonid Kogan was known to play songs in a straightforward manner, which doesn't fit with this song. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge, huge Leonid Kogan fan; but I must admit, Sarah Chang plays this more suitably.
k0r34nb02 2 years ago
I'm get you wrong. Kogan is out of this planet.
Bautisnemo 2 years ago 2
Don't forget that there is beauty in simplicity.
calloffthedogs 2 years ago
Straightforward manner ? This is the culmination of the russian school, the absolute top , you can't compare , even smell both careers , I respect Chang as a person and as an artist , but , Kogan won the best competition in the world while living in USSR, started teaching in the best conservatory of the world at that moment ( Moscow ) shortly after and he had time to practice 10 hours a day as he usually did. HOW CAN WE EVEN COMPARE ?? THIS MAN WAS A SUPER HERO OF MUSIC AND VIOLIN
Bautisnemo 2 years ago 4
dont forget heifetz
jazzecca2007 2 years ago
Russian modern school Yampolsky-Yankelevich-like.
It all came from Auer ok, but I'm talking about the second half of the XX century, Heifetz in my opinion belonged to the first part. ( In fact it did, lol )
Great respect for Jascha as well.
Bautisnemo 2 years ago
yea lol.
jazzecca2007 2 years ago
Heifetz didn't live in any authoritarian system, he was a wealthy man, and as far as I am concerned he didn't even practice half of what kogan did.
Bautisnemo 2 years ago
Interesting that you comment on the political system. I've often wondered how big role this plays. I'm well accuainted with (ex-)Soviet Union and I know there was more of a "practice or die" attitude there. On the other hand, you dont want to think that music should depend on politics... but yes, unfortunately it does. However I'm certain that Kogan would be as good if he'd grewn up in lets say Germany.
laurentius88 2 years ago
I don't think so...he was born in Russia to study with Yankelevich and Yampolsky, to get the school he had !! Anyway, nice comment!
Bautisnemo 2 years ago
I wouldn't say that it was "practice or die". It was more like "we only show the best, and if you're subpar then you will fade into obscurity".
D0g63rt 2 years ago
Yes, I agree - I didn't formulate it very well.
laurentius88 2 years ago
heiufetz practised like crazy- it was kogan who had the joy of living. kogan was a very nice gentleman, heifetz was also a gentleman- but i prefered always kogan as if it was about musicianship, but i notice that one actually also prefer kogan if it was about technicianship, kogan was not less technician on violin, as heifetz- besides for me kogan plays much warmer.
paganviodio 2 years ago
" It was Kogan who had the joy of living "... Well being forced by the KGB to do things u didn't want to....if that was the joy of living my name is Mary Poppins
Bautisnemo 2 years ago
well, he wasnt forced to do anything, KGB has done things if you wanted to get out of the State. this was not the case by kogan. he was a monument of the Soviets. he had a great reputation and everybody loved him. if there was somebody in CCCP who had rest from being forced to do anything- this was Kogan. Your prejudicy is wrong.
paganviodio 2 years ago
Mmmm...you are remarkably wrong informed.
Bautisnemo 2 years ago
KGB???? maybe he was just a great violinist, maybe he was one of the greatest. What the heck would the KGB have to do with it.That is like saying the KGB made fish swim.
sechenry6 2 years ago 22
Totally agree.
I don't know and I don't give a fuck if he was a spy or whatever. I just care that he is an outstanding musician and that this performance has truly touched my soul.
susantash 2 years ago 3
@sechenry6 Again, you have no fucking idea.
Bautisnemo 1 year ago
@sechenry6
Hmmm... its entirely possible. Consult your local CIA fish expert.
D0g63rt 1 year ago
@sechenry6 I will answer for the last time, your comment reflects a obvious ignorance about soviet sociopolitical system, artist were used by the state for political purposes.
Bautisnemo 1 year ago
Great reputation and everybody loved him are things that people in the KGB didn't care a fuck, they were powerful and rich, that's true but at the moment of politics they were puppets as everyone else.
Bautisnemo 2 years ago
how do you know that kogan was forced by the KGB to do things he didn't want to?. Was kogan a spy or something? i mean that's like saying that the CIA forced hirally hann to play for them or something crazy like that. sechenry6 is right, you are remarkably wrong informed
Mike1245690 2 years ago
Wow, well, appart from not knowing things that are a public secret you obviously ignore the fact that soviet musicians were used as postmans in soviet times to bring important documents to russians spies all over the world during the cold war and they were forced to collaborate with the KGB for this. It is quite obvious you don't know a shit about this. Go at least watch the documentary : David Oistrakh, artist of the people ? To understand a little bit what am I talking about.
Bautisnemo 2 years ago 2
I heard these stories too. It is troubling to hear, but when you hear the same stories from numerous different people, then there must be some truth to them.
calloffthedogs 2 years ago
And by the way, if you're a violinist and if you've studied in Europe is not difficult to find people which studied with Kogan in Moscow , not at all, ex-soviet teachers are everywhere.

Her Majesty Kogan is five stars PLUS supernatural magic of touch and expression.
In EACH piece he plays.

Very beautiful. I played this piece with my friend. But I play the guitar instead of the piano. I think the piece is even more beautiful when played with violin and guitar! Hope to find that too on YouTube.
