My 8 year old cousin can speak stuff in Irish... but then again she actually /is/ Irish.... @jayyim123 The Irish language is a Gaelic language. The English sounding words you here are basically new words that there was no Irish word for so we just invented one for example television in Irish is Teilifis
"Sounds like european with english words just thrown into it. lol!"??
What the hell does "European" sound like? Does Spanish, French, German, Swedish etc all sound the same to you??
Irish & Scots Gaelic, along with Welsh & Breton make up the living Celtic language group; English, Dutch, Danish etc are in the Germanic group! They are quite separate, and only distantly related.

@SuperAramis2000 it is my understanding that the the irish speak gaeilge or irish Gaelic as i have heard it called ... Americans speak english well most of us any ways because england is the country where our language originated from .... the irish speak irish as that is the country where their language originated from.... i am no exper just and interested party
@SuperAramis2000 Irish is a subset of Gaelic since the Scottish , Manx (Mannish, or from the Isle of Man...but called Manx) variations are different enough to be noticable.
To be completely honest...I didn't even know that Irish was a language until just last year. I grew up thinking it was just a variation of English like Australian or British xD

@TheFcasey@IndescribableEnigma Actually there is. English follows different rules based on what country you live in and is classified as such. No need to bash the poor guy, he just doesn't know much about other cultures.
@Mestizachicabueno : yes I think you are right, my ppl in Erdély (transilvania)were lucky not invaded by the english :D english invented the first concentration camps as well, and not the nazis. @derekutca It's actually because in 1831,the English parlaiment decided to use Ireland as a social reform lab rat, and gave them free public education, the first free public education in history(Stanley Education Act). It was mandatory for all Irish kids to go to school, but because the school was taught by English speakers, they were taught in English. The native Irish tongue declined drastically in less than a generation's time.
@juddz90 : Hmm, in Erdély(transilvania), the vlach (romaninan) invadors provided free education for the Hungarian children as well, but they could not prevent my ppl to speak hungarian at home, or after school. @tonyblackops Aye, England kind of destroyed the Irish and Scottish lanuguage due to its persistance at attacking Scotland and pillaging Ireland. The languages being galic, the old scottish language, and gaelic (or Irish) the old Irish language. The only language apart from English in the U.K thats has survived is Welsh. I mean survived being that Welsh is actually used in general use a lot in Wales and the native languages of Scotland and Ireland arn't.
@TheKoeberto: I am a native speaker of German and do not understand one single word. The similarity comes from the different "ch"-sounds (like in Scottish "Loch Ness") being used in both languages.
It sounds very Germanic for some reason..I speak fluent German and my brain kept trying to translate words automatically as she was speaking because of how similar it sounds.
I don't understand most of it. But some words ring through like it was english. It guess that's from secondary school and I do like poems and songs in Irish e.g. Kila.

Hi Ziggy actually my comment was directed at the author of bad language but thank you all the same for responding! Now that the 'bad' posts have been deleted it's a pleasure to read some intelligent Irish History posts!
@valeriebarrasful I tend to try to correct people who have false information about Celtic culture and Anthropology in general, but their lack of education and quickness to react defensively ends up in quarrels, sorry, but i do contribute in enlightening ways, look up Scottish Gaelic Weather report, you will notice how the old Pictish language must play a part in the difference and a wee bit of Norse, also SCOTS GAELIC IS SPOKEN MUUUUCH SLOWER!!!!!!!!
I don't wish to respond to the video per sé, only to say why is it necessary for people to use bad language in their posts? This is not only offensive but also spoils an otherwise intelligent discussion on the origins of the Irish language! I think it would be better if we did not have to read such language!
@valeriebarrasful Would it not be better to simply not be offended by the mere combination of letters, letters which someone decided "when combined together these letters shall form a word that will offend you simply because you were told this word is offensive and not because its actually insulting." I choose not to let other people decide what words are offensive for me. There is a seriously lack of logic when it comes to being offended by the mere sight of the 7 "deadly" words....
@JMERYAN Mate, the United Kingdom, or England to be precise was the cause of the potato famine and the consequential Black45 migration to the United States which you could navigate by following the dead bodies floating in the water as the boat conditions were horrendous. It was bad enough there was a "little ice age" occurring at the time, but England taking more crops than Ireland could produce to feed themselves was an act of shame. Eitherway we are now at peace& Celts, let us share that pride
In my own opinion, any Irish speaking Irish people, native or learner, are way better than any English speaking only Irish people. By the way, any Irish speaker can also speak English way better than me, so do not worry anymore. You cannot pretend all the world to speak only English when they have their own native language. That is a fact in all Europe and was a fact in Ireland too, maybe 200 years ago.
@mamc1986 Actually, the Gaels came to the Land now known as Ireland about 2,500 years ago, slowly their cultures merged with the Picts, the ancient inhabitants of Scotland, Pictish is more ancient and is said to actually sound a bit more like Welsh, after some time the Pictish language faded away in favor of the Gaels language. Both of which are Celtic peoples, but have some differences in culture, around 800C.E.(AD) Pictland had changed enough to the point where is was called Alba, or Scotland.
@GoldenAxeVox666 Also, over time both Celitc peoples integrated with Norse culture and blood as well, the Scots a bit more than the Irish, but any Modern Celtic(including all of Britain ) person has Norse or Scandinavian blood in them as well. Either Directly from the Vikings, or the 3 or 4 generations of viking that inhabited Normandy before finally conquering England from the Saxons.
I'm reading a book titled '1000 years of annoying the French'. In 1690 The Battle of the Boyne was won by William of Orange who defeated King James 11: 'this was not only a calmity for James but also for the Irish Catholics, who had to strap themselves in for about three centuries of Anglo-Protestant domination' thereby out ruling the use of the Irish language!
Hello! I am from Croatia. I've always been fascinated by Gaelic culture and language and I'm glad to see that people are trying to keep the this language and culture. However this is one of the oldest languages in Europe. I must also say that the Irish people are the most hospitable and cheerful people in the world. ;)
Is comórtas é ina mbeidh bailte nach bhfuil sa Ghaeltacht ag dul in iomaíocht le chéile chun an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn iontu agus duais a bhuachaint ó FnaG.

I want to let you know that in my Napoleon: Total War Europe campaign (as Napoleon's France), I liberated Dublin and allowed the Republic of Ireland to be founded, then invaded England, destroyed everything, occupied it for years and continually put down any rebellion.
So youre welcome, now you dont have to speak english anymore :D
@acr08807 No mate, she is Speaking Gaelic, and i wish I knew Gaelic and Svedic or Finnish to translate, but i know only English, a few Deutsche, Norse, and a couple Gaelic words.........
@29iceskater you're sort of right and i applaud you for not assuming something like that just because of superficial similarities. but they are very distantly related. only about as related as german is to italian, though. the indoeuropean language family! :)
@29iceskater oh, sorry. i didn't know that! i like trying to give people information about languages online. (especially about creoles and trying to do away with the misconceptions.) but anyway, i never would have assumed i'd run into a linguistics student. :)
@OscarBravoUSA What the hell? What was that suppose to mean? Are you suggesting the Celtic languages must go extinct? Screw that!
Those languages are equal to Germanic, Italic, Balto-Slavic languages and to all the other languages of the world. Those are part of Europe's civilization, the Celtic languages are one of the oldest European languages.
@OscarBravoUSA Becuase they are a treasure and should be preserved. For scots gaelic, there are still areas in scotland where it is a first/only language, and several schools within scotland are teaching it as a secondady language as well. I speak it and my children will learn it as well.
@GotSnowedIn I want to learn so bad! its exceptionally hard to learn without hearing it spoken as the written language is almost in code, how do you write a unwritten language! I wish they had Gaelic Instructors around here.....
I'm trying to learn Irish right now. It's a beautiful language.

By the way, any Irish speaker can also speak English way better than me, so do not worry anymore. You cannot pretend all the world to speak only English when they have their own native language. That is a fact in all Europe and was a fact in Ireland too, maybe 200 years ago.

May I please ask how Irish Gaelic split off of Scottish Gaelic?
mamc1986 1 month ago
@mamc1986 Actually, the Gaels came to the Land now known as Ireland about 2,500 years ago, slowly their cultures merged with the Picts, the ancient inhabitants of Scotland, Pictish is more ancient and is said to actually sound a bit more like Welsh, after some time the Pictish language faded away in favor of the Gaels language. Both of which are Celtic peoples, but have some differences in culture, around 800C.E.(AD) Pictland had changed enough to the point where is was called Alba, or Scotland.
GoldenAxeVox666 1 month ago

I must also say that the Irish people are the most hospitable and cheerful people in the world. ;)

Is as Cluain Dolcáin (BÁC) ó dhúchas mé, áit ina bhfuil tuilleadh Gaeilge ná mar is gnáth sa phríomhchathair innti agus ba bhreá liom mo bhaile a fheiceáil sa chomórtas ach níl an liosta ar fáil ar shuíomh TG4. Tuairimí ag aon duine?

I want to let you know that in my Napoleon: Total War Europe campaign (as Napoleon's France), I liberated Dublin and allowed the Republic of Ireland to be founded, then invaded England, destroyed everything, occupied it for years and continually put down any rebellion.
So youre welcome, now you dont have to speak english anymore :D

@29iceskater you're sort of right and i applaud you for not assuming something like that just because of superficial similarities. but they are very distantly related. only about as related as german is to italian, though. the indoeuropean language family!

DonJeta0007 2 months ago
@OscarBravoUSA Becuase they are a treasure and should be preserved. For scots gaelic, there are still areas in scotland where it is a first/only language, and several schools within scotland are teaching it as a secondady language as well. I speak it and my children will learn it as well.
GotSnowedIn 2 months ago 8
@GotSnowedIn I want to learn so bad! its exceptionally hard to learn without hearing it spoken as the written language is almost in code, how do you write a unwritten language! I wish they had Gaelic Instructors around here.....
