I hadn't thought of Jimmy Knepper until tonight and was delighted to find him on Youtube. I had seen him with Charlie Mingus several times and that was at least 40 years ago
I never even heard of this group. But Knepper and Tabackin are a near-perfect pairing and the rhythm section sounds just right, not taking too much attention as so often happens. Very nice tune, which I take to be Engels'? Great title, too.
Thanks for this - after 45 years as a dedicated jazzhound, it's a real treat to stumble onto something I really didn't know about at all.
It's" Lullaby of the Leaves" whatever they're calling this version. Oh, LEAVE of absinthe! Very clever.
John Engels' time feel reminds me a lot of Mel Lewis. And that's a great thing.
Is there more from this session? And who is the bass player?

Sounds to me like Jimmy finally got back most of his range he lost when Mingus socked him in the mouth.
