  • Read Lois McMaster Bujold's Memory, what Mile's mom says about culture - it's all shared or conflicting fantasies. What's important is being able to touch each other, which means understanding each other. This "video" is just a way to fit into a slice of the "Goth culture." The intention was kind, and repeatedly we were told this was OPTIONAL.

Pretend that life is a 12 Step program. Don't take things personally, except for good intentions; take what you like, and let the rest go. Thanks.

  • That is bullshit. I embrass anyone that does not conform as long as their beliefs do not desecrate mine, we're cool. One last thing, old school goths that are stuck in their old music are just as blind as their parents that are stuck into their old music.and the parents before that.

  • Honestly labels are there to label OTHER people not to label yourself. As being labeled a goth by others, I think I have right to speak. Your whole poser vs real goth is stupid. You are trying to relive the hay days when goths could scoff all newcomers cos you had their cliques to be satisfied by. You never gave a shit that someone else is not conforming to society because they did it their way and not yours.

  • Gahaha. So much wrong info.

Starting with: GOTH STARTED IN THE LATE '60s And mainstreamized (relatively) by the end of the '70s when industrial music started to erupt.

  • Just be yourself buddy. Fuck the labels

  • I think you need to learn how to spell 'poseur' before you make a video...

  • Thank you for saying it better than I would have!

  • It's about having fun and being yourself. Damn how can people be so closeminded they dare to say what is goth/punk/emo? Some say that I am a goth some say an emo, I say alternative because I am free in what I do/think/wear :)

  • Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie, Bauhaus, the Cure etc. all vehemently DENY being goth. And pretty much everything anyone considers to be goth is considered not to be goth by someone else.

Face it, there is no goth. It's all just a GOTH DELUSION.

  • haa nice =) no cradle of flith or other shit ^^

  • i dont think it really matters what you listen to or how you dress or look or act, if you like the syle than go for it but you have to have the right mind set. I dont think there is a specific definition of "goth" (the subculture) and i think by being yourself you wont need to make something like a "how to" video because you wont care about these other so called "posers" and you will only worry about what your doing and wont care about someone elses veiw of a style. Just my opinion.

  • So your teaching people how to be sheep and look like everybody else xD

  • Unlike history, we live in a society were technology is changing at an even faster pace! Again if you study history correctly you'll find that the dark ages was a time that the economy and technology declined forgetting some of the innovations of the Greeks and Romans. This was do because of the Goths(a Germanic tribe) that sacked Rome. It wasn't until the middle ages that things start to pick up again. This is were you have Gothic architecture which emerged out of the Romanesque style.

  • Actually goth is what you make of it just like any other subculture. Technically if a band identifies as goth well then they are goth, saying goth only comes from the 80's is like saying metal only comes from the 70's or that rock only came from the 50's aerosmith is not rock because they aren't from the 50's. Yes goth came from the 80's but just like any other culture it evolves and grows with the time. Posers are the kids that are goth for like a year or two.

  • You shouldnt narrow down the subculture like that. There are many parts to it, the subculture isnt all about the music and the clothing. Though those two are very important. Literature and philosophy are big as well.

  • i love the bnd him

  • subcalter is somthing all goths shold respact and i fined it sickning win pepol agus me of bing emo or what ever its deeper thin thay know im an artist and thats what i staned by not a lil girl who just were black my mening go back back in to my chiled hod .so there ;)

  • i like how its not a mader of what u have to look like to be goth im a die hard metal head but i love this bends with a pashun in the goth subcaltcher and unasly goth shold cum to you nacherly from dark humer and a desirer for black not i want to be_ fell in the blank the

  • And not all goths have white skin, there are the dark goths with the darker skin.

  • to look and act it comes off as being weird and fake. And I agree, if you with redneckdipper1337 if yourself, you don't need an how to video. Goth is what you make of it, and what it means to you. To me, it's being dark, well being beautiful, sometimes old, and ancient and something that you create.

  • I don't agree with this video at all, since many Goths have their own style of clothing, there isn't one style of clothing to be goth. Why couldn't a goth listen to Nightwish, or this other bands you name? If you listen to Nightwish or these other bands, it does not make you a poser, Before Nightwish picked their new singer. I would put that under goth or gothic. I know many goths that listen to all sorts of music. A poser to me, is someone who tries too hard to fit in and when they do try

  • Wrong lol goth Music didn't start off at that music. the first music goth was into was Opera. Be for all these music came out. Opera was first. And there where a few Operas that was goth and was singing. And Goth been out longer then that do more research.

  • i tend to gravitate more to the industrial rivethead and cybergoth but it all starts with the cure =P

  • I love evanescence so bad and im goth. goth is being interested in darker things but also being your self...you dont need a freaking how to video on how to be yourself and not caring what other people think?

  • XD if you need this video your not goth your a posser just like all those emo-kids

goth is a mindset and the cothes should be an exspersion of your inerself

  • Goth isn't about clothing or music. While those do indicate whether one is goth or not, Goth is a mindset. It's about the allure of the dark. Romanticism of horror and morbidity. Fascination with death. The recognition and mourning of evils mainstream society chooses to ignore and tolerate, maybe even embrace.

The rest of it is camp. A mockery of the things society tolerates.

  • Insulting people for not being goth enough, or not the right kind of goth, goes against everything we should stand for. By mocking them, insulting and criticizing them, we prove ourselves no better than the mainstream.

  • As long as they have the mindset, who cares what music they like or what clothes they wear?

  • @dmsisson77 What you posted here is crap. The Goth scene derived from punk rock in the early 80's. A fan's aesthetics was inspired by the music. Then in the 90's the scene started to diversify bringing un-related types. ''It's about the allure of the dark'' Really? If you're so dark, why are you using the internet? If you study history correctly you'll find that ''dark'' was a term scholars used to define an ignorant society!

  • @Forestmountains1 wow. You need to study history more. People don't call them the Dark Ages anymore. Turns out, they were pretty enlightened back then. The number of inventions and social changes were actually above what we do now.

As for dark, I meant the fascination with things that thrive in the absence of light. You know, darkness?

  • @dmsisson77 During the dark ages people told ghost stories and mystical things because they really had no jobs for months. It was during the later middle ages and the Renaissance that innovations start to explore newer things. The term ''Gothic'' is also later used as a dark, morbid, barbaric, and nostalgic term which was used in Gothic literature beginning in the 17th century. Gothic horror literature had a influence on the horror film genre. Some of said history influenced Goth music.

  • @Forestmountains1 You know nothing of history. The Dark Ages was a myth created when people started turning towards rationalism. Nowadays, no modern scholar uses that term. In fact, they started questioning that term as early as the 19th century as archeological discoveries painted a more complete picture.

  • @dmsisson77 As a goth, I love Goth Rock and DeathRock.

  • By teaching people how to be goth, doesn't that teach them how to be a poser?

  • I like all the oldschool bands and Ive been gothic going back to the late 80s.. but I still love Amy Lee, its "Gothic NuMetal" but I give Amy a bunch of "Gothpoints", she is mainstream but she is a much better Goth than Manson ever was. Thats her JOB, she has to be a little mainstream to get as big as she did. I respect her and I respect her talent. You can see me on my "Venue13" video on my page if you doubt my "Gothiness" ha ha.. 42 years old and still Goth!

  • if you need advice on how to be goth your a poser just be yourselfs

  • Comment removed

  • notice how all the real goths rated DOWN and all the wanbee's rated up

  • Aww, mention Sopor Aeternus! Search right here on youtube ppl, if u are looking for goth, look no further.

  • I myself am a Nontraditional goth.Considering I wear all colors, have a fade, wear slim fit jeans, and a guitar in my hand.I listen to ANIMALS AS LEADERS,Cynic,Tesseract,Ulver,Seventh Stitch, and Jagga Jazzist.I also like marshmellow fluff sandwhiches along with long short walks on the swamp.

  • You can listen to anything you like...I'm in my early 50s, and I'll be dammned if I'm throwing away my older CD's / dusties / cassettes in favor of a mandated "set in stone" playlist...

  • halloween was last month lol

  • well.. you didnt mention specimen!! just fucking kidding, gawd

  • Comment removed

  • blondes can be goth too.. like the "ice goths" :)

  • Rule number 1. Don't shop @ Hot Topic. LOL

  • @jorgedean1 There are still a few decent items in hot topic.they're just increasingly scarce.

  • If you were really yourself, you wouldn't need a "How to" video.

  • @redneckdipper1337 what if you know what music you like and need friendly advice?

  • @Xxbeckyblackwings Go ask people about good bands in the "Goth" musical culture.

A lot of Doom metal bands are also a good option.

Woods of Ypres, My dying bride, etc.etc.

  • you left out ASF : (

  • @moopants100 it was mentioned twice including an album cover r u blind?

  • Gothic encompases a few things.. Music, clothing and lifestyle are the MAJOR points... You can like the music and not be gothic if you dont wear the cloths and enjoy the darker aspects, this would be "Alternative" same applies for any other combination, if you dont touch in all 3 of those departments, your not really a gothic. This video did leave out our sense of humor, and so on, but overall it was a good video for those who are interested in starting (key word there) to learn about Goth.

  • So just because I like the cure and a lot of 80's songs/bands,I'm goth? Even if I were to wear jeans and a white t-shirt? That's like saying just because I have more than the typical 2-ear-peircings that makes me a bad girl,or that just because I don't have any tattoos that makes me a good person.I like dressing in dark clothing with my chokers and lace and whatnot. It make me feel good about myself.Makes me feel sexy and empowered.Besides, real people don't need labels.

  • @Casshern1100 I would say no, if you just like the bands, being labeled a goth JUST because you like the music is like saying your a groupie because youve been to 3 or more concerts by one band... it just means you like the music =) People really need to chill out on labeling everything, either your Gothic because YOU ACCEPT that label and live the lifestyle as well, or your not a Gothic, because YOU DONT accept that label, and/or dont live the lifestyle (even in your own head).

  • For people who cant understand..goth is not a type of dressing style. It is only a music. So that is why listening to goth music makes you goth. If you are "goth" and do not listen to goth music i can bet any real goth will think you are a poser. It is also a lifestyle but the music is the most important thing.

  • First of all, I think your information is very one sided. Sure some of the music that WE listen to may not necessarily be goth, but there are no set rules. I think it's very poser-ish that this video was made. Liking Bahaus , Clan of Xymox etc... isn't what makes you goth. Seeing art were the normal eye doesn't see art like in life's dark corners is FUNDAMENTALLY what makes someone goth and not what they listen too. It's a way of life and not something that can be taught.

  • i dont like the goth music from the 80's there is some modern goth music (havnt found tho) i listen mostly to j-rock and industrial and linken park and sometimes even shakira :P she does has a rock attitude. wel she used to have it but not anymore. i'm dotn 100 % goth for most part i am but i also have a little cyber in me and emo, skate, lolita, punk, harajuku and many more so i cant really say i'm goth. who cares what i am i'm just me

  • To my opinion, this is a new kind of standardization...

  • ok so i want long hair, but i dont think it goes along with the whole gothic theme. Im currently growing it out. Should i cut it?

  • I don't count any music as 'goth' music. Music is music and if it touches you it touches you. If you're goth and like within temptation or whatever, then hey, who cares.

  • @crazysox99

I agree I like most of these bands but i'm not a goth or scene or emo i just like the overall genre of rock. Alot of people think im a "wannabe goth" because i dyed my natural blonde hair black, I didn't do it because i want to copy any kind of style or follow any trends i just liked how the color looked on me.

  • @KivaDrakkor Ikr! It's so annoying! With labels you just can't win!

  • @KivaDrakkor It's really troubling. I've had kids ask me if I'm goth because I wear mostly black, and I just shrug them off.

  • I think Siouxsie Sioux would have words with you disregarding her work, you think she is some offset of this?!lol,I think not,she decided to progress,so silly!x

  • Um, why do I HAVE to like "goth" music to be goth? Can't I just be myself? Sheesh.

  • @crazysox99 I agree Goth is about being yourself. I can like The Cure and like Evanescence too! I listen to Johnny Cash and Brad Paisley as well. I like darker, goth things. I have an appreciation and acceptance of the dark aspects of life. That doesn't mean it needs to engulf my soul and I will never be happy again. When I need a pick me up I listen to Jason Mraz. Nothing is more fun than to have people see you dressed to the hills, full on makeup, while your belting out a Johnny Cash song!

  • @TheMonstura Yeah! I'm done with labels, I'll just throw on whatever I feel like wearing! You know?!

  • @crazysox99 HOORAY FOR INDIVIDUALISM! =D

  • @TheMonstura XD HELL YEAAAAAUUUUUUHHHH! :D

  • @crazysox99 how is being yourself being goth? You're being goth by being goth, not yourself. What an odd concept you have.

Goth rock, siouxsie and the banshees, bauhaus, sexgang children. Use google, it's not that fucking hard. Don't use the excuse of "I just want to be myself". That's lazy nonsense.

  • @crazysox99 just clothing goth and dont listen music = poser and fucking fake you killing the movement go fuck yourself.

  • @darkmaxiron Well sorry if I don't fit your stupid little standars of what goth is. I like dressing this way and yet I dont like the music and whatever else. What the fuck else would U call myself?

    P.S You firs, dip shit.

  • Damn typos: *I *first

  • @crazysox99 Sense the scene started from ''goth music'' wouldn't you agree that there has to be one original commonality that gives all unrelated types the same label?

  • @crazysox99 That's the whole point of being a goth. Be yourself. You can dress in all black and listen to Lady Gaga, Souja Boy, Owl City, Bruno Mars, and even (this is JUST an example) Justin Bieber.

  • @SuperSkeletonGirl I agree with all except Justin Bieber. If you do that you lose you rights to call yourself human and in a few years will fired out of a cannon into the sun. :D

  • @crazysox99 I love youuuuuu

  • @CrunchTHEkangaroo Erm..thanks? o-o

  • @crazysox99 You have to listen to Goth music to be a Goth. Goth is a MUSIC based subculture. That's like saying I'm a Metalhead but I don't listen to metal. WTF?

  • @metaldorksforever666 Actually it isn't at all. "Gothic" was originally a type of architecture between the 12th and 16th centuries in France. It was mostly churches that took on the style, with many pointed arches and metalwork on the windows as well as stained glass. The fashion was derived from the architecture and has been around longer than the music.

  • @zQuestionsleep *points and arches

  • @metaldorksforever666 It made a revival in the 1900's. See Maila Nurmi or "Vampira" from the 1950's. There was really no "goth" music at the time but she embodied much of what the modern goth community strives to be.

  • @crazysox99 you are aloud...it's more of like a little history lesson. Know where it came from and to gain some appreciation of where the style goth came from. You can be who you want to be ^_^

  • @crazysox99 and no one said you wernt allowed to be yourself.

  • @crazysox99 you can but it would be ironic to like a subculture that was founded on music you don't even like, dont you think?

  • @crazysox99 the goth subculture is a music subculture. smart one.

  • didn't naked and the dead come from new york as part of the deathrock scene? w/e good video none the less too bad about the sound though

  • I couldn't agree more. I myself am a Victorian Goth, and I wear chockers, lacy shirts, gloves, looong skirts, even the little funeral hats! Thank you for saying Evanescence isn't Goth! My personal fave band is the Bauahus, but I also listen to Creature Feature and Linkin Park. Thank you for making this video!

  • @AliceNation thank you for your comment, and im glad you like the video, i am a victorian goth too thats why the fashion tips are mostly of victorian goths XD i wouldnt be abke to say a thing about cyber goths steampunks and such :-p maybe ill have to make another vid for those after doing some research :-)

  • @Ereshkigal91 A lot of people say cyber goths aren't real Goths. I know for a fact, Steampunks are. They're like Victorian Goths, except they're very futuristic, I really can't explain it!

  • @AliceNation as far as i know both are consider goths though with cybergoths there is a big debate in the goth community around that. basically not for the fashion but mainly because of the difference in the music they listen too.

  • @Ereshkigal91 Steampunks are Victorian with a passion for technology. Cybergoths listen to much different music than Goths.

  • @AliceNation the 20's and future mashup is how I describe steampunk.

  • @Casshern1100 Actually, if you read up on them, it's futuristic and Victorian.... though there ARE Steampunk Cabaret goths.

  • @Ereshkigal91 are stempumks considered goths?
