guys, can I put any pdf into this thing from my computer? some of my pdf's are very big, which are basically scan of books. and how can we transfer the pdf's from computer into kindle?
@hofas2007 any. the browser is still listed as experimental, and browsing is not very comfortable because of the low refresh rate (compared with lcd). get a kindle for reading, not browsing. the best use for the browser is wikipedia and maybe dictionaries.
Amazon releases cheaper ad-supported Kindle. For details, go to Facebook and search "ereader" to access the ereader community page for the latest news and offers.
Kindle provides a better reading experience than the laptop, iPad or phone. Reading on the iPad is like reading on the laptop. It has the same LCD display that blasts light into your retinas. The Kindle has an E-ink display that doesn't emit any light. Another point is that the laptop and iPad contains too many distractions. You'll soon find yourself doing everything except reading your book.
I bought the Kindle 3 and I am loving it, I am an avid reader and I can't believe there is no eye strain. Reading for hours on end is back to being enjoyable.
I had a Kindle for Xmas ( love to bits). I downloaded loads of free books. I'm a bit of a Churchill nut and a mate of mine recommended a book called What Churchill Would Do, I have avoided buying books so far (no point with so much free stuff) but it was dirt cheap so I thought I would give it a go. It was a really great book, loads of war stuff and some interesting and different business advice. Not the usual drivel you get . Worth checking out when you get a chance.
A kindle Let's you read books without eye strain this is a good thing but if you want to play games and read you get iPad the two are a little similar but also a little different not saying either of the two are bad but I prefer the kindle since I read more than play apps and listen to music I bought a iPod to play apps and listen to music I tried reading on my cousins iPad and found it hurt my eyes and gave me a headache but I enjoyed the experience of the cool apps and the loudness of my mus
I like the kindle, so I decided to see if I could earn for free. Result?, yes, you can earn one for free from Amazon.com by visiting this webpage. Coolest thing I have done on the net. Have a look.
@JongaLife if your consumption of music and movies is high, so iPad will be your friend. If you are some who is really love to read and your rate is something like finishing a book a week, so a dedicated device for reading like Kindle would be a perfect choice!
@firax456 I would like the answer to this also, I've attempted to read books using my LCD computer screen for example, but for me there is just too much eye strain compared to reading ink on paper.
I feel sorry for people who buy an iPad with the intention of using it as an eReader. iPad is an over-priced toy. Kindle is so much more suited as an eReader. I know because I have a Kindle3 and my friend has an iPad.
the kindle is strictly for reading books... if you can't already tell from this video the screen and words are supposed to look very similar to an actual ink & paper book. Plus, this is Amazons way of keeping up with technology for those who don't want to carry a bulky paper back around.
My husband just bought me one of these for my birthday. hey guys, is it possible to just place a pdf book in the kindle via usb? without having to buy and download it straight off the kindle ebook market shit?
eInk is the only way to read electronic documents almost as easily as a printed book. If you can stomach reading a whole novel on an iPad or other backlit display then great - I couldn't face it.
@JerridPayne only on some. On amazon they can't give you discounts for ebooks cuz they can't but they can for books like hardback and paperback. HOWEVER SOME ebooks are about 50cents more expensive than paperbacks, but the cost of shiping the paperback will even out the prices. All out of copyright books are free thanks to project Gutenberg.
Good information but the narrator was incorrect on one fact. The wifi model only comes only in the graphite color option. The 3G+wifi model has white and graphite options.
@VradisTheGreek "why should I pay 130 dollars to read a book"
To be exact, it is $139 wifi or $189 3G+wifi. I really don't know how to respond to your question, because I didn't pay just to read a book, I pay for a collection of a library.
@SeitxiS you're right... but Kindle is for people who read books very often... for me is a completely waste of money... besides reading a normal book is more comfortable for my eyes
Excuse me, iPad fanatics: Go away and read a month's worth of books on your iPad and come back with a verdict. That is assuming you haven't gone blind or broken your charger with overuse.
People, stop comparing iPad (talbet device) with Kindle, Nook, etc (eReader). This is two different categories of devices. eReader has longer battery life, they can be flexible, they can do video and colors (demoes was showed). Try reading on iPad or Computer for ~14 or just long hours non-stop and try doing the same with the book or eReader and let's check whose vision will go down first.
I want to get an eReader because I like to read. I'm considering the new cheapest Kindle because it's gotten to such a low price. A reason I like the idea of a dedicated eReader is because having all of those things (internet, games) might tend to distract me from sitting and actually reading. i.e. If I had an iPad, instead of reading, I'd just surf the net, get on youtube, play a game...
Question: what is the purpose of the 3G version? Is it worth it?
@daro2096 I Have no idea, i have the same problem. Either Kindle3 or Kindle dx. I want the dx cuz it has a bigger screen and i think that's awesome. But this one is small and cute and it can go anywhere. And now it looks brighter. I'm Torn too.
I'm an avid reader and having physically used kindle and ipad for reading, only the kindle allows a longer, "anywhere" reading experience akin to a book. Prior to this I was dismissive of the kindle as the "betamax" of it's domain but having used it, this is the future of e-reading not the iPad, though I am sure Apple will get it right in versions to come...
iPad idiots are the most bitter ADHD rejects on the internet. It burns them up that another device (the Kindle) is so superior for actually reading books, something they themselves don't do, but feel inferior about.
@gawtmeelk ur kidding this thing is overpriced and clearly not as good as the ipad the ipad has games facebook u name it what does the kindle have oh u can read books in crappy quality
It's an eBook. It's all it's SUPPOSED to do. You aren't even supposed to compare to things that are totally different from each other. I could read a book on a laptop with the same effect. No one is going to spend a fortune on an overpriced iPad if they're just going to use the eBook feature.
Why did you post here? You on your crusade again? Every time a phone or something gets reviewed, Apple fans are whining again
@Greensmurf true...but actually the Kindle does a bit more than just that, in a way. You can also browse the web on it. Search...Google, Wikipedia, etc. And the social networking things. As well as receive emails (as long as they have documents attached.) So it's a web-browser, doc-transferer, as well as mainly an e-book reader. The iPad is too an e-reader but is also like a laptop computer, but without any actual physical keys. (And also, iPads are way more expensive than Kindles or Nooks.)
@theapplefan01 This is a stupid and moot point. "Why buy a clock radio when you can purchase a $100 million Jumbo Jet that has one built in?" The Kindle was designed PURELY for reading books with an E-ink display developed from the ground up to mimic paper and remove the strain from reading from an LCD screen.
Though judging by your username, it's obvious you won't see reason unless it has Steve Jobs's faeces smeared on it first. I also question whether you read at all.
@theapplefan01 lets do a test... you read for 14 hours STRAIGHT no breaks except bathroom and read in the bathroom on your precious ipad (on brightest setting) and ill read for 14 hours on my kindle. Your eyes will be like hot coals in your head. The ipad is just an overpriced laptop thats flat. I can read kindle books on my laptob 2. No ipad needed. It hurts your eyes to read for a long time. Crappy quality? it looks exactly like a book.
@rowelle both the white and black kindles cost the same, you pay less without 3G though ("wifi only"). It's worth the extra $50 though, the webbrowser is webkit based (the same engine as used in safari/chrome) and 3G connection is supposedly free (read: no fees!) in 100 countries.
@danielsanii The wi-fi only comes in graphite only so if I wanted it in white, it would be $50 more for the wi-fi & 3g at $189. Can't wait to get mine :)
@CharmingLordSausage You clearly don't read enough, then. Anyone who reads enough to warrant buying one of these can attest to the fact that when you have thousands of paperback books, you are going to have a major issue with dust and silverfish.
No shit, of course we don't "NEED" this item. We also don't need 5 star restaurants, touch-screen cellphones, plasma televisions, and extended vacations. It's a called a "LUXURY".
@CharmingLordSausage You remind me of the guys who clearly were unable to grasp forward thinking. Like IBM execs who couldn't understand why the average household would want a PC. Or the guy who told Henry Ford the automobile was a horrible idea and no one would buy one. The kindle, and devices like it, are forward thinking. Sip energy, reduce paper use, and promote reading. Anything that does that gets an A+ in my book.
Duh.... Some ppl just don't get it. The kindle is for serious bookworms who like to read...and read...and read. My iPad is for casual reading but mostly surfing and movie viewing. But some people just don't require that. So could all you apple fanboys stop saying it's rubbish. I have an iPad but I could still see myself using the kindle if I read a lot.

For those who like Winston Churchill I have posted a video of the Kindle text to speech app reading chapter 1 of my book "What Churchill Would Do".
I have a video of the Imperial War museum in London as a backdrop.
My book is for Churchill fans only. It takes his talents for managing WW2 and applies them to everyday business life.
It's filled with loads of WW2 stories that most people won't have come across.
It has had eight 5* reviews

It's an eBook. It's all it's SUPPOSED to do. You aren't even supposed to compare to things that are totally different from each other. I could read a book on a laptop with the same effect. No one is going to spend a fortune on an overpriced iPad if they're just going to use the eBook feature.
Why did you post here? You on your crusade again? Every time a phone or something gets reviewed, Apple fans are whining again
Greensmurf 1 year ago
@Greensmurf true...but actually the Kindle does a bit more than just that, in a way. You can also browse the web on it. Search...Google, Wikipedia, etc. And the social networking things. As well as receive emails (as long as they have documents attached.) So it's a web-browser, doc-transferer, as well as mainly an e-book reader. The iPad is too an e-reader but is also like a laptop computer, but without any actual physical keys. (And also, iPads are way more expensive than Kindles or Nooks.)

@theapplefan01 the kindle can show books and lets you read for hours without your eyes hurting from led lights.

Wow, the screen looks so much lighter in this version! Looks great :) I'm going to spend the extra $50 just to get it in white :)
rowelle 1 year ago
@rowelle both the white and black kindles cost the same, you pay less without 3G though ("wifi only"). It's worth the extra $50 though, the webbrowser is webkit based (the same engine as used in safari/chrome) and 3G connection is supposedly free (read: no fees!) in 100 countries.
danielsanii 1 year ago
@danielsanii The wi-fi only comes in graphite only so if I wanted it in white, it would be $50 more for the wi-fi & 3g at $189. Can't wait to get mine :)

@CharmingLordSausage You clearly don't read enough, then. Anyone who reads enough to warrant buying one of these can attest to the fact that when you have thousands of paperback books, you are going to have a major issue with dust and silverfish.

@CharmingLordSausage ..."convinced that they need something that they don't."

No shit, of course we don't "NEED" this item. We also don't need 5 star restaurants, touch-screen cellphones, plasma televisions, and extended vacations. It's a called a "LUXURY".
MrSquitwet 1 year ago
