Moreover, religion has existed since the dawn of recorded time; people did not "get along fine" without it. Religion served as a powerful influence for the formation and stability of new empires. Without religion as a springboard, civilization would have developed slowly. Ony comparatively recently have new means of control emerged.
@ShrougerNite Good points. I wouldn't say the dawn of time, I would say religion most likely formed as humans began to understand the death. Regardless we live in the modern world now where nuclear weapons are a reality. The sooner we get rid of religion the better our chances are of not having an idiot destroy a city in the name of Allah.

But we cannot condemn religion throughout all ages lest we in so doing attack the foundation of all society. Instead, a measured approach is in order, wherein we observe and accept the former value of religion and then seek to progress into a state no longer prey to superstition.

I doubt they'd be willing to have him say "Hey, did you hear about that magic prophet who came from Mecca?"...which would actually be more accurate.
