  • By the reviews I'd always read, the WH-1 sounded like it was night and day different to the WH-4 but I really think the reissue held its own!

I like the glitchy decay of my WH-4. When paired with delay and other effects, the odd electronic warbling decay is beautiful. To each their own :-)

  • ..and I didn't realize the WH-1 was so small! I'd still rather the WH-1 based on cosmetics alone. but it seems to has a less offensive digital sound.

  • I have 4... I want 1.

  • and the detune is better on the original

  • the whammy iv tracks low octaves better, but the whammy 1 harmonizes and tracks octaves up better

but fuuuuuck i did not realize how small it was hhaha

  • the whammy 4 is recomended for people with bigger feat, they should have a little tag on both of the pedal boxes, whammy 1...made for people with shoe sizes 9 and below...whammy 4 made for people with shoe sizes 10 and up...lol

  • @JoeMan352 just be glad I put shoes on!

  • Did anyone notice on the Morrello AS solo, the WH-1 kind of peaked? Just curious if anyone else saw that

  • Excellent demo, actually answered all my questions... And thank u so much for finally playing those covers correctly lol u dnt kno how many youtube demoers hav tried most of those songs and failed miserably

  • Liked the My Iron Lung intro, I didn't know this is the pedal Greenwood used.

  • To me it sounds like the WH-4 has better tracking and a longer range (wider pedal position angle perhaps?) but the original seems ballsier when it comes to the harmonies and detune functions.

  • Great man!!, just one question.. what's the name for the song next to like a stone solo?

  • obviously radiohead

  • Morello and Gilmour are the only two I have heard use this with any taste. I bought one, and I got tired of it quick. Your Morello sounds good dude!

  • WH-4 all the way!!

  • what song is 2.35 ?? man that's insane :D nice demo too

  • @redwill21 Searching by Joe Satriani

  • The original is a bit messier.

  • Excellent demo but the camera makes your foot look like Side Show BOB

  • @paulgaudinjrBCN That's not the camera. I've got a big foot!

  • From what I can tell from your recording, it appears to me that the newer "4" sounds a touch cleaner and just by watching it seems to track a little better....... I've got to get me another one soon! Mine was stolen along with the rest of my pedal board, couple years back...

  • nice shoes

  • WH1 sounds better. It seems to track better and the 2oct up is smoother and fuller. Do they both have the same optical set up? The WH-4 uses a plastic wiper attached to the rocker that gradually gets darker and gradually blocks the LED out as you depress the rocker (as I'm sure you know). Whereas on the MK1 Whammy/Wah, the LED is attached to the end of a metal arm attached to the rocker and as you rock the pedal, the led moves closer or further away

  • i dont get it i have the wh-4 and ive used it for the last 6 years!! ive never had to calibrate it. it works perfect. the only thing is i have to tighten up the pedal once a year and thats it. ive seen other people say the same thing about needing to calibrate theres. so whats the deal??

  • @harrisonrg777 If the pedal gets banged around or moved, then it usually needs to be calibrated, otherwise the extreme of the settings (heel down, toe down) are not perfectly in tune.

You only need to calibrate it when those aren't in tune.

  • what song in 1:50 ?????????

  • @mrcarlosgtaIV Radiohead - Subterranean Homesick Alien

  • Tem 2 música do Audioslave (Like a Stone e Seven Nation Army) e 1 do Rage Against the Machine( Down Rodeo)

  • what song in 6.05 ?

  • @yamahaparadox 7 Nation Army (by the White Stripes)

  • @yamahaparadox 7 Nation Army (by the White Stripes)

  • @kriista what song in 1:50

  • BIGGEST FOOT EVER lol

  • Whats the thing in the middle of the pedals?

  • Huge feet :O

  • what song is it at 6:40?

  • 3:42 YAY

  • jajajjajajaja

  • winer is Reissue WH-4

  • Gah! You have to use a killswitch for Know Your Enemy!!! :'(

  • Holy shit, this guy sounds like Dogbert from the Dilbert cartoon thats based on the comics!

  • please make a comparison with the Whammy DT

  • i really like the modern sound of the WH4 !! but i don't like the fact that i need to calibrate it like every day !! :/

  • Se supone que el Whammy se usa con la Izquierda ¬¬

Whammy is supposed to be used with the Left

  • @grindelito Se supone que se usa con el pie con el que mas cómodo se esté.

  • what song is played at 2:30 can anyone let me know please

  • @Kangaroopoo007 "Searching" by Joe Satriani

  • The WH-1 tracking sounded smoother to me overall.

But I was honestly surprised at the blind test results.

  • What is the name song is like a stone before?

  • una cosa es comprarme el pedal, y otra es tocar como tu, eres el amo

One thing is to buy the pedal, and another is playing like you are the master

    :)

  • Like a stone - Down Rodeo - seven nation army - Know your ennemy - message in a bottle <3 <3

at 2015, do you think I'll can find a WH-4 very easy ? (I'm just 14 and I want one, but I think it's better to wait...) sorry 4 my bad english

  • What do people think of the WH-I vs. the WH-II?

They have the same processing chip, similar size and different function selection, but what about the sounds??

  • @ishancooper i love my wh-2 would never replace it, but , i dont know, it doesnt sound as fat as the WH-1 its a bit more shrill and trebly. But it's got its own sound, even though, really they all sound really similar.

  • @90sRockWhore My only beef with the WH-II is the noise/tone sucking. Otherwise I think its great. Need a TB mod for it.

  • @ishancooper i use a BOSS EH-2 and CS-2 they seem to kill all the tone sucking from that black bitch of a WH-2. youre right she does suck a lot of tone, i might be the only one who loves the level knob.

  • I LOVE MY WH-1 ! GO INTRO VOICE OF THE VOICELESS FROM RATM !!!

  • IMO ....wh-4 chous s better...incredible

  • The only thing I dont like about the Whammy 4 is the mid range of it. Like.. it goes straight from the treadle effect at the bottom.. straight to the top effect. Theres hardly any middle area unless you control your foot to go extra slow on it so it goes through it, but who wants to do have to worry about that? How large is the mid range area of effect on the WH-1? Thanks.

  • great review!!! thanks a lot it helps !! you forgott both at the same time!! hahah

  • great review!!! thanks a lot it helps !!

  • Wh4 is better in this comparison IMO. Maybe another wh1 might have sounded better, but who wants to pay the extra cash?

  • a whammy pedal demo will never be complete until you add some Tom Morello madness!! YEAH! =D

  • 2:30 searching, by joe satriani. all copyrights reserved ^^

  • I think the WH4 sounds better on the lower frequencies but you can't beat that WH1 higher frequency warble. I love it. To each his own I guess. I am going to buy a WH4 soon simply because I don't want to shell out $500 for the original on ebay in crap condition.

  • lol for all i hear the wh4 sounds better and more transparent then the wh1

  • a radiohead fan! right on! cool demo

  • what kind of loop switcher thing do you have in the middle there? i dig

  • I picked the Whammy IV in the blind test. Honestly I think that the Whammy 1 wins for chorus but aside from that there is a slight difference between the two and I can't even tell if that difference is better or not. The reason why I prefer the Whammy IV is because it has a MIDI input which can give you a huge range of new possibilities and it costs 500$ less.

  • Can this be powered by a Voodoo Lab PP2?

  • @galiddnomyar Yes, you could use the external AC outlet to power the pedal.

  • damn man your foot looks like a damn 12 inch subway sandwich ,i just purchased the whammy on the right side new for 199 im just waiting for it on the mail, which one is better? ,i didnt see much difference except for the size of it the one on the right is way bigger than the whammy 1 ,i have 10 stomp boxes can this go on the first position on my board?

  • would u recommend spending 500 for a WH-1 or the 200 for the re-issue?

  • @tanvo93 Buy a used re-issue for like 90 or whatever. The difference is marginal really.

  • @kriista aite cool thanks man..i dont even want my set-up to mimick tom morellos or whatever..that would defeat the purpose of art..

  • what is the name of the song at 4:39?

  • @GuilhermeEFOliveira down rodeo by rage against the machine..

    its a good song

  • what is the song at 2:30 ?

  • @ryuZakiMusicNinja Searching by Joe Satriani.

  • What was the first song played?

  • @trokeification My Iron Lung from Radiohead

  • @kriista i was like wtf? i heard this song before..lol now i kno why

  • RATM!!!

  • The "bagpipe" @ 14:05...the WH-1 is the clear winner. See: intro to "Voice of the Voiceless" by RATM and the solo in "Shadow on the Sun". I don't know why Digitech couldn't get that concept right in the reissue. Other than that and the chorus they sound really similar. Although the 2 octave "screech" like in "Bullet in the Head" sounds noticeably different on the WH-1 as well.

  • @RunningFromSatan Good point; it's especially odd considering that in some of Digitech's other recent pitch-altering pedals (such as the HarmonyMan), they got the "bagpipe" pitch selection effect seamless.

  • Hey what's the name of the 1st song ?

  • Thanks for making this. I had the WH-4 and sold it about a year ago. I always heard the WH-1 was better but I agree that they are both pretty similar. When you play My Iron Lung in the intro to my surprise I thought "A" sounded better than "B". Also do you know if the whammy was used in the outro to Under the Bridge on the album?

  • doesn't the m9 have whammy? you should compare that too, I have a m13 I'm not sure about the m9

  • I love this pedal!!! wh-1 sounds good!!!

  • oh and which one do you like better? in your own oppinion.

  • @kite3350 I like elements of both. I like the sound of the decaying glitch of the WH4 more, but the WH1 has better bottom end, and MUCH better chorusing effects. For the size difference I decided to keep the WH1.

  • @kriista what do you mean better boom at the END?

  • @kite3350 I mean better bass response. When you do octave down stuff, it's thicker sounding.

  • @kriista gee thanks! how much does the wh-1 go for?

  • that second riff you played (when you played the whammy 4 for the second time) was so beautiful and epic!

  • What is that thing in the middle? Just an A/B effect loop switch?

  • @RunningFromSatan The thing in the middle is a true-bypass looper, so I can compare both Whammys with true-bypass (my WH4 is modded to be true-bypass internally).

  • 06:39 what song is that?

  • @luiszv14 A generic bass funk type jam.

  • Thanx dude, I really want an WH-1 one now!

  • i didnt know it was smaller lol cool

  • Great video!! I was in doubt but now I am definetly buying this!!!!!!!!!!

  • thank you, grazie! great video comparison!

what do u think about the pitch glide of the M9-M13?

    Ciao cheers!

  • ¡Gracias por el video! :)

  • I hate to say this since I don't have the original and can't reasonably spring for it, but is it me or does the original sound "warmer maybe fuzzier" or more "authentic" especially for many of those first tunes and anything Morello? Some stuff I honestly couldn't notice a difference on.

  • i picked the original in the blind test

i could see myself using a whammy

but the original sounds much better and i can't really justify the price

  • sound strangely similar, got a wh4 myself, and now waiting for my power suplly, to get messy, helpfull vid

  • Damn. I'd heard everywhere that the WH1 is leaps and bounds above the WH4, but it appears they sound much much more alike than I had envisioned.

  • what guitar and pickups are u using?

  • @luiszv14 It's a Steinberger GM Pro with Seymour Duncan Pickups.

  • superb video!

  • Let's see some 4-octave madness!

  • whats the first song?

  • What's the name of the song at 2:32?

  • @BlueCrayolaMarker Satriani - Searching

  • i just the the chrome edition and I want to mod my other (red) wh-4. I'd really like to trade the chrome one for a wh-1. I'd love to aquire the bass whammy though... great comparison, and mod tips! thanks for posting!

  • what is the song of 8:34 ???

  • @luiszv14 Message in a Bottle

  • my iron lung and subterranean homesick alien are probably in my top 5 favorites of radiohead, them being my FAVORITE BAND

  • Comment removed

  • what is the solo at 3.20?

  • @DjMetiuZ Like a Stone by Audioslave

  • You have a gigantic foot dude.

Also, after watching this I'm convinced the WH-2 kicks the hair off of both these pedals' asses.

  • The WH-1 seems to struggle more on high notes and fast runs. The tracking difference isn't big enough to me to justify paying $500 for a used WH-1 when you can get a WH-4 for $100. I also prefer the Detune mode of the WH-4 over the WH-1. The WH-1 sounds more like a tremolo effect than a chorus effect like the WH-4.

  • I actually like how WH4 seems to scramble the chords more pleasantly, like you demonstrate around the 11:00 / 12:00 bit of the video.

  • What effects are used to the first song besides the Digitech?

  • @joeypaint Nothing at all. Just guitar, into whammy, into amp.

  • RADIOHEAD!!

  • radiohead is cool

  • Is these pedals that we hear on Pink Floyd´s "Marooned"?

    Tks

  • for me the tone of the original wh1 is better than the wh4

  • @insaner338 Down Rodeo by Rage Against the Machine

  • Honestly, I love both. I think the WH1 has a SLIGHTLY smoother sweep. I like it's size, too. It also sounded better on octave sounds, not as loud, just enough wet/dry mix. It also didn't appear to have a slapback-ness in the detune portion, which I like. I would kill for a WH1. The only thing I honestly like about the WH4 is that it has midi out and dive bomb. Other than that, I prefer the WH1. Thanks for the review, very insightful.

  • I own a WH-1, but the WH-4 sounds better in this demo save for when you turned the rotary dial...the WH-1 sounded great there. I think there was a subtle, but present volume differential...the 4 being a bit louder, which will almost always gear the brain towards favor. It seems as though you played better w/the 4, as if you were more inspired. I'd bet that YOU like the 4 better.....please tell. And thanks for the shootout!

  • @vampyros1 I kept the wh1 but I do prefer some things about the wh4. I perfect whammy would be a hybrid for me!

  • Id say they both sound great, but i think the Wh-1 is just a bit smoother and more organic sounding. Although the Wh-4 seems to have slightly higher range. I would agree that their droptune settings sound nearly identical. If there is a way to mod the Wh-4 to sound a little more organic like the Wh-1 Id do that. But as they are, Id have to pick the Wh-1 as my personal favorite.

  • what is the song at 2:35 ?

  • @tony642321 "Searching" by Satriani

  • Can you please post your entire signal path? What are you running through? Is that M9 in the equation, an amp? Thanks.

  • @JeffreyC2. Signal path is Steinberger GM-Pro -> True-Bypassed WH-4 ->True-Bypass Looper (with WH-1 in it) -> M9 (used for distortion/delay/reverb on appropriate songs) -> Fender Deluxe VM -> Zoom H4 microphone/recorder.

  • thx for puttin this vid up i own the reissue n wanted to hear the difference :)

btw wats the settings on your delay for like a stone matched perfect ive been messin wit slapback, short delay but this delay was spot on i own a boss dd1

    thx

  • I have both pedals as well and I just wanted to add that the WH-1 tracks SLIGHTLY better, but not much. The WH-4 feels much better when you rock it back and forth because of the angle that your foot is at when it is fully pressed down in either direction.

  • yea i def agree with you i love rage stuff n just like a stone on the reissue sounded alot fuller...but when it came down to know ur enemy at 7:20 just the harmony sounded alot crispier n not muddy

  • very close

i think the wh4 sounds better

now you have to compare with the digitech EX7 ;)
