Notable that the theme's composer was billed just after the stars and before the producer. Laurie J. must have had some clout I presume. I hear the influence of Edwin Astley in the military drum style, but then, the US series also liked that arresting marching motif. Aside from that, evidently the tiny security post could not have held both soldiers in a downpour - unless they'd enjoyed a v-e-r-y close relationship.
UFO, definitely, Professionals, New Avengers and Bergerac, Robin Hood, Six Million Dollar man and Hawiaii Five 0 and the unforgettable Charlies Angels
Emma Peel was my first big crush in the 60's... but Purdey definitely gave her a run for her money.. I always wanted to be Steed - tried really hard to save up for the bowler hat and sword (60's opening).. but my £4.00 a week earnings (2 days before and after school on the market) and all day Sat would never stretch... Never mind - I decided to be Hans Solo instead. Wife was disappointed - she preferred Steed. They're never bloody satisfied..
@caxtonman LOL...it does look that way doesn't it, but I believe that the two series made actually ended up costing around £6m. An enormous amount of money for a show in 1976/77! That's one of the reasons why the French backers stopped paying for episodes, and we ended up with those 4 terrible stories in Canada! Makes you wonder what the money was spent on!

@Rassilon72 Wow, £6m!!! That's 1.5m each for McNee, Lumley and Hunt so the rest on a few Leyland cars, plywood sets, and the production team then? Still a great show from the 70's though.
Many people think that The New Avengers was a pale version of the 1960s series. This is the version that I most remember (primarily due to its numerous reruns on Toronto stations during the 1970s and early 1980s) - I thought that Gareth Hunt (RIP) was a hottie, one of my first preadolescent crushes. (Andy Gibb, Barry Manilow and Randolph Mantooth were up there, too.) In retrospect, this is far better than most of the stuff airing today.
@markojameow I some ways I don't think it was given a fair shake. They reran both the original and the New Avengers series on Bravo more then ten years ago and while the original is slightly better the New isn't a pale imitation of the old, was never intended to be. Unlike the numerous attempts to relaunch Dragnet or other classic shows (Hawai Five o at the moment) the New Avengers was more a continuation of the original series then an imitation.
Thank god everyone doesn't think I'm weird for liking T.V.Themes. The thing is, this version as per the T.V. Series is better than the commercially released version with that irritating wah electric guitar. Acoustic sounds much better. Thanks for posting!
@Funkstar124 You're not weird for liking TV themes. They're becoming a lost art form on TV these days. They can make or break a TV show, no matter how good the production values, casting and writing are.
Glad you all enjoy this as much as me! Just a quick reminder to check out my blog (link is in the vid's description) for more of the same. And some other, different stuff too!
Sad to see Gareth Hunt died. Loved this as a kid. I wanted to be Purdy.

My only problem with The New Avengers? THE THEME WAS LAME BY COMPARISON EVEN IF GOOD!

Top tune! Early days of staying up past 9 oclock. Only now does that military tone stink to high heaven of social engineering. No idea back then.

Such a fantastic series, and the opening credits really put me in the mood. The credits for the New Avengers, were more upbeat than the orignal.

Oh for gosh sakes!
I remember watching a few episodes of this series and then ditching it. Nothing like the original, but how could it be.
This is the first time in 30+ years I've seen the opening.
Well, I guess Ab-Fab finally rescued her carreer....
