I've seen a couple good lovecraft movies, been fan for 20 fucking years now so I know when it's faithful or not and those were. People love to whine and feel elitist, it gives them the illusion of being part of a very select club. Poor apes :(
@somberlight@chargermaniac Have a look at my channel page for an stab at Lovecraft in the style of Hammer (be gentle - student production and budget etc). Have to agree with those saying it's what remains without description that makes Lovecraft so great.
Lovecraft's stories worked because he didn't actually show much horror. Instead, he made you imagine it. Most (modern) horror movies don't work because they show way too much -- and the gory, gloppy monsters they toss in are often laughable.
But seriously - why the hell can't anyone make a decent Lovecraft film? The goddamned stories are handed to you on a plate, just get your hipster ass out of your heads, lose the indie-film crap and make a goddamned horror film, William Friedkin style. Damnit.
@chargermaniac I don't know man. I kind of liked it. They were respectful of the myth that Lovecraft created and they made a scary little movie. The acting was good and the effects were descent enough too.
@chargermaniac Well there was Dagon. And Re-Animator was pretty good. Oh, and everything HPLHS has made... And I heard that Guillermo Del Toro is directing a At the Mountains of Madness movie.
@chargermaniac I KNOW, right? One that is very cool is the “Call of Cthulhu” film by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, which was made like a silent film and was very faithful to the original.
Right now, though, Guillermo del Toro (with aid from James Cameron, director of Avatar) is trying to make a very good, high-budget adaptation of “At the Mountains of Madness”, and what he has said so far about it sounds incredibly promising.
@chargermaniac Del Toro allmost does it...but then cocksucking mutherfucking studios said no, god i wish the guy who cancelled the project get his ass raped by chtulhu
@ThyKillerKira Actually, the studios approved it - but then del Toro said he wouldn't do it if it wasn't rated R, to which they said no. Apparently he's trying it out with another studio at the moment though.
@chargermaniac it's simple, lovecraft's horror is always the unseen, mostly a horror that the main character can't bear to describe. This just doesn't work in movies, just look at m.night shamyala(something, I can't remember what the heck his name is)'s movies
U don't know why? Because Hollywood doesn't want that. For them it's not good films, because there is no happy ends, no love stories, etc.... Del Toro have proposed an adaptation of the Call of Cthulhu to Hollywood, & they rejected, because of the reasons I've tell. This is miserable.....& unfortunatly a good adaptation, means good budget....Del Toro have tried to make it by himself (the mountains of madness) but it is now stopped....
@chargermaniac "it doesn't permit itself to be" filmed! :P and no, i wouldn't go Friedkin, i would go Corman (Vincent Price era), but knowing how thick modern horror audiences have grown to be, that would be a nightmare to set up.
@chargermaniac The problem is that few--if any--directors want to make a straight adaptation. They tend not to see it as "good" for their career because they don't get to put their spin, their stamp, on it. It's not personalized and therefore they're afraid they won't get the credit for all their hard work and money. It's the kind of move directors (and writers, I'd imagine) do once their careers are established. But for a good movie inspired by Lovecraft check out "In the Mouth of Madness".
This film is jsut awful. Jeffrey Combs wasn't that bad, but that's just not enough to make it up.

I watched this on SyFy a year ago, and it was worse than it looks. It does capture the creepiness, but it's overtaken by the crappiness

All those effects where worser then the ones from the 80's.
It amazes me how terrible this movie was, though Dunwich story is amazing.
