@wyomingmali - Hello. I respect your view. However, having lived through the time frame as depicted, I recall all the basic civility & decency of my grade & high school classmates as being wonderful. Back then, most schools had no need for metal detectors, drug searches or desk locks. Bullyism existed, but not anything like it is now. It wasn't perfect, but, for the most part, children grew up feeling safe, loved & instilled with a solid worth ethic & sense of justice. Just saying. Peace.
Mary Wickes is just sensational here but note what Annette does with an extremely simple script and dialogue. When the other actors are speaking she keeps keen eye contact with them. She LISTENS. There's never a feeling she is acting or being someone she isn't. She has a great knack for giving the appropriate feeling for even the most unremarkable line. And she doesn't make the character just a goody two-shoes; she gives her many facets, including courage.
Mary Wickes was forever in demand; she could do drama, comedy, even musicals. The name "Katie" was taken from the maid in "Meet Me in St. Louis." Mary Wickes grew up in St. Louis not far from the Smith home on Kensington Avenue. She always planned to retire back in St. Louis "when I am done doing whatever I am doing."

The corn factor is at the cringe level, off the charts.

I haven't seen this for over 50 years. Ah, the memories. I used to rush home from school to watch this and the other Disney serials.

Arguably one of the most bankable character performers, next to Richard Deacon, of course.
Sylvia Field should be remembered, too.
Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow YouTubers.
