don't ask me why but this reminds me of irvine when i was 16.......got kicked out of the parking are I was in so I had to drive(out of my mind) ...seemed ok till I got to the overpass, one look, then decided I shouldn't go anywhere..so pulled over found parking somehow and on the walk back I got to meet this guy who was arguing with his invisible friend, which made me feel a little more sane.....love those days.......
Sometimes I wonder,"Do the Dead love me as much as I love the Dead ?" then I listen to them play something like this, so beautiful and heartfelt, and the answer seems like a definite "YES".
My favorite song by them.....this so much captures the spirit of that time....I was just out of the Army...selling The Quicksilver Times on the corner of Wisconsin and M in D.C....went to Woodstock with my friends .....The Band at Constitution Hall....Alvin Lee...an explosion of creativity....let's do it again without the drugs.....
@DictionRedaction it's not so much an intro as a transition- from Scarlet Begonias to Fire on the Mountain. The first song was not included in this vid
@conversatyr, yeah, as if KM did not choke on enough of his own vomit, where are you headed with this bad-taste joke? Derail your stupid-ass, right now, spare us all the ugliness...
@frankc32 not at all what i meant. i just meant he plays a similar style with similar types of slightly off-tempo drum rolls. both are indebted to elvin jones style of drumming. by "xanax" i just meant "drug that makes you mellow".
wow. you thought i was being nasty? wow. you're heart is so full of anger that you're always ready to see ugliness in what people say. wow.
this is why i avoid the internet like the plague. so much anger. so much misunderstanding.
@conversatyr, you are so right, my friend, and I offer my sincere apologies.
Mine was a black-hearted comment if ever there was one, and it was inappropriate for me to project my own unhappiness onto your innocent and honest comment.
Best to you for taking the time to put me in my place!
My first show was 5-5-77 at New Haven which was awesome, I should have went to this show but didn't, but the best show I ever saw was a Red Rocks rainout at McNichols Arena on 8-13-1979, Song list was nothing special, but the band was something special. Best Truckin' I ever saw.
1: Shakedown, Me & My Uncle> Big River, Candyman, El Paso, FOTD, Minglewood, Althea, Sailor> Deal
2: Miracle> Bertha> Good Lovin, He's Gone> Other One> Drumz> Wharf Rat> Truckin> Nobody's Jam> Truckin E: Sugar Mag
@tjhillgardner, dude, "Althea" is one of my definitive songs, closing out a first set with "Sailor Of Circumstance" and "Deal", well that is as sweet as it gets...
I went to Cornell, class of '78. We went to this show like we went to all the concerts at Barton Hall. We weren't big dead heads, we liked the music a lot, though. But there was something about that show that was magical, really, really special. The place was packed, cause DH's following the band had filled the place up. Listening to these tracks 32 years later is really cool.
@frankc32 Most "true" deadheads will say 5/8/77 is a great show but how could there be a "greatest grateful dead show"?
Some 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's shows have just as much punch as this one, check out the early 80's (1980-1983) for some smokin shows. Check out 10/10/82.
@frankc32 i'm almost kinda with you- you can't hate on cornell 77 cus we weren't there. ( i kinda might) but greeks? 85? are you shiiting me? AWESOME!!!!! tee hee.
@fuckutubelogmein, dude, #1, dig the username, #2, the 6/14/85 Dew to open Set 2 blows my mind to this day. The 6/16 Scarlet/Fire does the same thing. I get chills every time!
There is nothing like a Grateful Dead show, especially a tight one.
@pbl1 oh woe is me, the wittwe wetawd thinks my sense of humor isn't flammable. brilliant comment, Poindexter. You're an embarrassment to grateful dead fans. We would be grateful if you were dead, that's certain.
Tough to find great shows after 84ish. Check Augusta Maine 2nd show, 2nd set.
May Jesus Christ bless and heal all dead heads and all the people of the world.
Jerry was no fool. When he passed on, I am confident that when he saw the Divine Mercy, Jesus Christ, Jerry went right to him. Mercy is available to us all. Best to tap into it early on.

@DevoDevoT, that is a cool, honest story, and one that rings true.
Most "true" Dead Heads will rank 5/8/77 right at the top of the class, cannot say I would disagree.
Personally, I prefer the 6/14/15/16/1985 Greek Theater shows...
