Agree, no reason to hate Collins music- wise, In fact he was a bloody good transition if you ask me and I ain't his greatest fan since he apparently " threatened" to leave the UK if the (Thatcher) Tories lost power in the 1980's.
@KITCHENOFDISTINCTION Hey if that's true he will be ecstatic now that the greedy b'stards are back in power, stealing from the poor, the sick and the elderly. Mister Collins obviously has business interests, etc., that color his attitude to the less fortunate in that ailing and feudal country, Shame Philip, shame on you.
The thing with despicable Phil, is the fact that when his first marriage was in trouble. The other band members put Genesis on hold, agreed that he should go sought out his marriage. And come back when he had done that, while Tony,Steve and Mike did their solo projects. Phil sadly fails to do so and returns with the bad news.Massive solo album sales later, how does he repay the favor?.As a solo artiste,h'es bigger than Genesis and quits the band. Nice!.

It must really suck to love one singer and hate the other...I love both Gabriel and Collins equally. Both have completely changed my life with their music, Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show, I Know What I Like, Carpet Crawlers - from Seconds Out or from studio - who cares!? Both versions have their own charms.
@genesis1975 Its the same thing in a lot of bands...AC/DC with Bon Scott vs. Brian Johnson, Van Halen with David Lee Roth vs. Sammy Hagar, the list goes on
@Prog Rok Mok Rod. Yes we do dont we. Ever so humble Master Gabriel. Had him down as a Prima Drummer in 72 an Gabby as a Prima Donna. Going over all this now 35 years later, I have no reason in retrospect to change that point of view at all.

Argue all you want about Gabriel vs. Collins...THIS is the best version of this classic Genesis masterpiece. The "Lamb" studio version is second....IMHO
I saw the live genesis concert in 1978 which has to be the best music show I have ever seen. I would have liked to have seen Peter Gabriel as the lead singer but Phil Collins did so beautifully. Phil took Genesis somewhere where I don’t think it should have gone.. commercial. I liked the old artistic classical rock sound of the earlier days when genesis was just amazing. I cannot get tired of this music its crazy! We certainly don’t hear music like this today.
@burgesmate This a an insult to the Datsun! lol You should compare an Aston Martin and a second hand bicycle. I agree that the "grocer man" is an hell of a drummer and knows how to make money but as the singer and composer of Genesis......no comments.

Can't understand why there are many Collins haters. He was a great dummer on Gabriel era, and I believe his work on vocals is great. IMHO, the leaving of Hackett was more decisive to Genesis music style than the dominance of Collins. Both are great, I see no reason to dislike Phil great work on vocals!
@doutorfred Nobody denies that, man. Great drummer, great vocalist. No doubt. Great Pop solo albums as well (I even dig 'em). But why he had to bring his shit to A PROG BAND? ...THAT puzzles me...I don't blame him totally neither. Mike and Tony were his partners in crime on "Selling Genesis by the Pound" as well....
And believe me: "I Don't Care Anymore"
There are so many other great Prog bands around nowdays...
@doutorfred no doubt genesis left a great heritage to the progressive rock era. and unlike many other bands they also did a great job later in popular music, not at least due to phil collins. he is one of the best singers of all time imo, his voice is just amazing. and i dont think thats his fault that genesis changed their style, its just the sense of time that changed. progressive rock kind of died in the late 70s, but genesis where there to stay! and thats a great achievment!
@ocb2112 Progressive Rock became Progressive Metal with the introduction of Dream Theater, the change of musical style by Rush and Iron Maiden's Rush phase. Still good, but not the same
it's because gabriel brought the songs to life...there's nothing wrong with collins as a singer (he sounds a lot like gabriel actually)...it's just that gabriel had TONS more range emotively..
They both have an amazing amount of talent and have contributed equally to the success of Genesis. Let's not forget the success of their solo careers. We should all look up to them.
@bananeskit Why? I'm a fan of the genre. One that this band used to play...that other band playing mostly pop hits and 15 minutes Prog medleys in their concerts was not of my liking at all.
Peter, and Phil...and that, to me, says it all. To me, you have 2 worlds here: Peter, the soulful storyteller, his voice like a brush on a canvas, painting...and Phil, with a perfect feeling for the right note at the right time, and a rhythmical timing to die for. To me, the REAL magic happened when these 2 great voices almost became one!
the lead into this song cannot be duplicated... I saw Genesis everytime they came to Pittsburgh, and cried everytime I they played this... and a few others!!!!
It's amazing how quickly Phil's voice adjusted to the lead role after Gabriel's departure. I think if I were Phil, I would have been very afraid to be out from behind the drum set like that (God knows I was when performing with my band).
@charles121251 Mike Rutherford plays a Shergold 12 String and Bass on this, Hackett the Gibson Les Paul Custom. Interestingly, Mike Rutherford does not play bass at all on this. Look to Tony Banks for the bass line played on piano
Peter (or is it Phil? looks like Phil) has just to begin to sing: Every syllable goes right though my heart. Incrediblie! But I don't believe it ist a Peter or Phil thing. It is just that the song was relatively new then and they played it like a prayer -full of love, hope and freshness. I love it!
When gabriel left the band, they thougth they were finished. They started looking for a new singer and as they auditioned new ones, Collins would advise the auditioning singers that they needed to sing it like this or that, or it needs to sound like this or that etc....as this was going on, Ruthurford and banks said..Hey..Phil is really good...HE needs to sing these songs....hence the album..And then there were three....
Why do I always see people posting attempting to lift Phil up and put him in the same ball park as Pete. You people have heard of venting haven't you? That's exactly what these comment sections were created for. Pete left and we're still not happy about it! Quit trying to sugar coat it and let us keep lifting Pete up! He deserves it! And God knows Phil doesn't need anymore praise...
Philip is from the working class and Peter from the upper middle. That is all there is to say really even though it's better if we say lots more about them. Truth is Philip was a classy drummer ( fokin brilliant akshully) and Peter a classy actor with a cute voice. Hey imagine if they'd used an electronic drum machine instead of Philip?
The fight between gabriel and collins fans never ends. I think both are great singers and one have something the other doesn't have. I think phil is better at melody and technique but peter is better at feeling and truth in his performance.
@onukhh i agree- peter puts more heart in this song, no wonder, he wrote it... but phil did a very good job. Without Phil the band wouldn't have had the chance to go continue on... so thanx, Mr Collins!
I remember a quote from Peter Gabriel in Armando Gallo's book "I Know What I Like," where Gabriel mentions his first experience seeing Genesis perform after he left the band. He says, (please forgive me if I don't get the quote exactly right) "Phil sings the songs better than I did, but he doesn't sing them with the same meaning." Just thought that was an interesting comment coming from the original singer himself.
Es la mejor versión de la canción, lejos, y la mejor época de la banda (seconds out es el mejor disco en vivo de Genesis), por más que Peter ya no estaba. Yel disco A trick of the tail, el mejor de todos.
Damn, every single version of this song after the original messes up that "mild mannered supermen..." part. The studio version of this song makes God cry, in a good way.
@talibe801 Amen to that brother! Phil was just perfect the way he was with Genesis and if it weren't for him and his style of singing, earlier Genesis would have never even been recognized at all. It was Phil that brought it to the level where Genesis would get more radio play and exposure to the "earlier side".
I like the voice of Peter Gabriel... But I think in this case Phil was better. His voice fits to this song better. But opinions always differ. +1, agree.
Ok...Peter is a world on its own...but not to forget: "Carpet Crawlers" was the only song on the original "the lamb lies down"-Album (1974) sung by Phil!
Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins brought two very distinctive energies to Genesis. There are songs once sung by Peter that were given a longer life by Phil. That is good! There are songs that phil sings that only Peter's voice will do. Yet that fact remains that without either of them Genesis would not be what it is. I'm thankful for both of them.
only one of their awesome songsssssssssssss can't believ how much hair phil had at one time cool he looks good either way actually i like him better without all that hair hahaha some guys just cant wear it
A mi me gusta mas como canta Phill que Peter, los idolatro y los admiro a los 2, pero si me decis, tenes q armar una banda y tenes q elegir para el puesto de cantante a peter o a phill, yo lo pongo a cantar a phill de una.
To me, it's Tony Banks that makes the Genesis sound, so I can't even compare the Phil and Pete eras. I like them both...because Tony's music was involved.
Ich finde beide sehr gut, eagl ob früher Peter oder dann Phil....einfach genial :-) Und wie Phil die Drums beherscht brauch ich auch nicht näher zu erwähnen!!!
in my opinion this song is about this "magic" selforganized manifestation of the life self-produced ideas that makes naturalistic things feel alive..its about that dancing moment what makes us feel free in a deterministic system..but the big door stands for the uncertainty relation and our limits as a pre-stage of a big synergy like everything works..u can call it a evolutionary gaol we all r trending to..like moleculeschains emergent sticking in other molecules to build up a new synergy..

No drummer has ever impressed me with like 100 cymbals or toms...
But look at this drummer's feeling for the music.
1st verse: coming in slowly with the hi-hat for the refrain
2nd verse: addition of basedrum, opening of hihat in refrain
3rd verse: addition of rimshot (but not during refrain)
4th verse: addition of rolls
That's impressing! That's what feeling is about!

JoacoPlanasZepp 11 months ago
@charles121251 That's Mike with the doubleneck. Steve is sitting on the stool to the far left.
sarcee1960 11 months ago
@sarcee1960 Steve Hackett's guitar makes this song-glad I'm not the only one who noticed his contribution. God bless.
utahn3752 9 months ago
@charles121251 Mike Rutherford plays a Shergold 12 String and Bass on this, Hackett the Gibson Les Paul Custom. Interestingly, Mike Rutherford does not play bass at all on this. Look to Tony Banks for the bass line played on piano

Phil's fantastic here. Moving performance.

I love it!

Mike should of been the lead singer, but Phil is good enough.

Both are awesome regardless!

@onukhh Yeah your right but what about ray wilson he was good too
brickmaster24 1 year ago
@onukhh i agree- peter puts more heart in this song, no wonder, he wrote it... but phil did a very good job. Without Phil the band wouldn't have had the chance to go continue on... so thanx, Mr Collins!
schnippenwippen 7 months ago
@schnippenwippen I agree 100%. Although I don't like Collins' period as much as Gabriel's, we all owe him the continuation of PG's work.

Phil's still the greatest rock drummer, he & Bruford invented rock/prog drumming...and did everything a decade before the other guys caught up...

The studio version of this song makes God cry, in a good way.

why is everybody always comparing peter to phill, peter was and is a great singer,
phill is a great drummer and a great singer, thanks to them we had beautifull moments of the best progressive rock ever made.

peter as a singer is a fake
his voice lacks every basic thing
he is a carpet crawler
igalflint 1 year ago
@talibe801 Amen to that brother! Phil was just perfect the way he was with Genesis and if it weren't for him and his style of singing, earlier Genesis would have never even been recognized at all. It was Phil that brought it to the level where Genesis would get more radio play and exposure to the "earlier side".
Great tune and nice video. Thanks for the post!

Ok...Peter is a world on its own...but not to forget: "Carpet Crawlers" was the only song on the original "the lamb lies down"-Album (1974) sung by Phil!
ohrenchecker 1 year ago
@ohrenchecker Are you kidding me? Peter sung lead on it. I'm 100% sure of that. But Phil's backing vocals are quite present on "Carpet Crawlers".
The only two songs that Phil sung the lead vocals for while Peter was still in the band were "More Fool Me" and "For Absent Friends".

I'm thankful for both of them.

in my opinion this song is about this "magic" selforganized manifestation of the life self-produced ideas that makes naturalistic things feel alive..its about that dancing moment what makes us feel free in a deterministic system..but the big door stands for the uncertainty relation and our limits as a pre-stage of a big synergy like everything works..u can call it a evolutionary gaol we all r trending to..like moleculeschains emergent sticking in other molecules to build up a new synergy..
