i have taken many deer with a .300 win mag. I use a 180 grain Swift A Frame which is a really tough bullet. (takes down elk and moose no problem) With the tougher bullet it doesn't get as much of a chance to expand and i normally see a lot less damage on deer, unless you break his shoulder. Then its a real mess. Cheers and safe hunting

8 mm Mauser 170 grn. That is just my opinion though. 30-30 is really good out to 200 yards or so. Both are good heavy cover rounds.
