  • I grew up in a poor Polish family of 15 in South Chicago, and when I met my husband he had just gotten back from Viet Nam. The Chinese Asians shot off his testicle, the hookworms infested his body, the malaria almost killed him, the government sprayed him and the other US Marines with Agent Orange, a horrible poison, he suffered from Shell Shock Syndrome and nightmares when he got back. Also drinking, drugging, gambling, womanizing. While in Nam, his girlfriend sent him "Dear John" letter. R.I.P

  • rest in peace ferlin husky thanks for all your music.

  • The hook, at the end of the song, may be the most powerful one in music.

  • Oh Thanks for posting Forgive Me, John!

  • RIP Ferlin.

  • Jean is a Woman

  • This record was a tremendous hit. It was on radio constantly, became the subject of parodies, and made a fortune for the record label. Jean Shepard was a straight-ahead, no-frills country singer whose career went on and on. Ferlin Husky had a tremendous voice and stage presence. Pure power.

  • You know, I have listened to this song over and over. Don't know why but maybe it's for the memories. Then looking at the pic of Jean Sheperd and Skeeter Davis I see the note Skeeter wrote at the top of the pic. Starting...."Jeannie..." funny the "DEAR JOHN" I received was from a girl named Jeanie also. Kinda strange, ain't it?

  • Hawkshaw Hawkins was one of the country artists killed in the same plane crash as Patsy Cline.

  • One question what was the name of the song Jean did "oh single girls don't be miss lead by the lying tongue of a man/

  • Don't Fall in Love With a Married Man.

  • There was a answer to this song too cannot remember who did or what is was called, would love to hear that one too if you can identify the singer and the name of that song.

  • The answer is Forgive me, John also by Jean Shepard & Ferlin Husky. Youll find it is on the Video Responses of this video.

  • There was also a Dear Joan and Homer and Jethro did a comedy version, "The bottle , er, battle had been won..."

  • @walknaftrmdnght kitty wells did the answer

  • Damn! Now thats some foul shit! Cold as a MF to marry this dudes brother! Well, at least the cooche stays in the family!

  • San Andreas

  • this song was in gta sanandreas

  • When I was 18 I dated a really great guy who was in the Army and he served overseas for two years - not in action though. It never entered my mind to not be true to him and I've never understood why any male or female who truly cares about someone would just drop them. We both married others, later on, but were good friends till he passed away in 1997. This song has been painful for many people I know who have experienced a Dear John letter. Thanks again for this by Jean and Ferlin.-Paula

  • This was on RFD-TV.........Great !

  • I saw the same show this morning too, just had to come and see it here.

  • I just saw Jean Shephard and Ferlin Husky singing this recently on Nashville Friends and Family... they sound the same now as they did then...especially Jean!!

  • I allways listen to this on my great grandmothers old and heavy 78's sounds bettr with the scratchy character of the record player tho!!!!\

  • trojan0150

I was also in the RAF in Germany, listening on AFN Bremerhaven, and guys did get the dreaded ' Dear John Letter' this is the song that initiated that term. It was not until the Wembley Festival in 1977 when I met and spoke with Jean Shepard, it was her 25th year in the business by then. I am now busy transferring JS vinyls to my Ipod at the age of 76!

  • Still one of the greatest country tracks. When we recieved one we used to nail it up in the mees and points were awarded for sincerity etc,Soldiers overcome anything.

  • I haven't heard this version of this great song Its wonderful Thanks Frannie for the share

  • This is my favorite Jean Sheppard song. She could bend the notes like no one's business. Gotta love Husky here too.

  • Being a Serviceman and away from the one you love is a HARD life. I guess we all have had some bad times...I too, received the dreaded "Dear John"...that was 30 years ago and Life has moved on, but this song still brings back the memories.

  • One of the best!!!!

  • Yep! That's how I got my name, and he called me "Sweetthing"

  • she has a great voice

  • I would be hard pressed to name another song that I like anymore than this one. Jean Shephard's voice is unbelievable. Please put her in the Hall of Fame someday.

  • Can anybody sing a better country song than Miss Jean Shepard ?

and also hats of to Ferlin Husky!

  • This was a favourite on Radio AFN in Germany in the 50s.Memories.

  • I know, I was there. Wish I could relive the the old times

  • I know, I was there. Missing the old days

  • What a picture of Mommy and daddy with that dear little son. It's sad he didn't get to know his children. I know Jeanie did a wonderful job raising them.

  • is that name taken from Hawkshaw Hawkins song "Lonesome 77203"?? Used to listen on AFN. Never knew he was married to Jean.

  • yes, up to that plane crash with Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas,a nd Randy Hughes, Jean was pregnant and ready to give birth any time , they also had another young child

  • my sister love the old country

  • I grew up with this song through one of my mom's records entitled "First of The Famous" which contains old country tunes from the years 1939-1961

  • Mijn dank. 5*****

  • One of my favorite country songs - listed to it in the early 50s, during the Korean War.

    Great stuff!
