  • When I was young we use to take this train from Buffalo to Scranton and back every year. Thanks for the memories

  • I used to ride this train from Hoboken to Scranton to visit my grandparents. It was the absolute highlight of my summer. I can almost remember the scenery. I definitely remember the Delaware water gap. Don't know what you got till it's gone.

  • I can't really tell from the movie, so can anyone tell me what the DL&W Phoebe Snow consisted of? Also, what cars still exist from her? I know both Tavern Lounge cars are on Metro North, both dining cars are owned by the ELDCPS, and the coaches were divided up among MTA, but are any of them still around? (I'm still hoping for the rebirth of the Phoebe Snow if the Cut-off is ever restored)

  • It would be awesome if you could put that footage on dvd............

  • This brings back memories from my childhood. I recognized The train crossing into PA over the "Cutoff" to Slateford Junction, going around the "Point of the Mountain" in Water Gap,past the DRJTB bridge where Rt I-80 crosses into NJ. I recognize East Stroudsburg station.(Later-Dansbury Depot) into Cresco. I live in Portland and railroads were a big part of my ancestors livelihood. Both grandfathers worked on the railroads one on the DL&W and the other on the Pennsylvania.

  • I have pictures of the conductors, on the Phoebe Snow, waving back to me, when I was a kid in Morristown, NJ. That was way back in the early 50s.

  • I DONT KNOW HOW ANYONE CAN NOT LIKE THIS VIDEO UNLESS THERE SOME KIND OF A DEPRESSEIE THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS WAS A GREAT VIDEO I WAS HOPEING TO SEE A Lackawanna FM DIESEL ENGINE BUT IT STILL WAS NICE TO SEE

  • America the Beautiful.

  • Today the talented singer Phoebe Snow, passed away. She was originally born with the last name "Laub" but when she was a young adult, and performing music, she changed her name to Phoebe SNOW because "She changed her name after seeing Phoebe Snow, an advertising character for a railroad, emblazoned on trains that passed through her hometown.:"

  • Just sooooo beautiful....RIP

  • Time to get rid of the Staggers Act and REQUIRE private railroads to run passenger trains! (I'm all for giving the railroads public subsidies to do this so they wouldn't starve, though.)

  • Perfect music for a great video. Thanks Mr. Sage for filming it, and thank you to Conrail6370 for saving and sharing it.

  • I remember as a child getting the train at the Brick Church Station in East Orange. Riding that train to Scranton is one memory that has remained in my 52 year old mind!!

  • Thanks to Mr Sage for the film I road that when I was a boy in 1970 just before it

was shut down i was 10 at the time I rember the lackawanna station

and how big it was I love the trains it was sad to see them dismanting the

    railroads in the 70 s

  • 0:13 thru 0:21 is the Roseville Tunnel and Roseville Cut, 0:30 to 0:35 is the Delaware River Viaduct (which crosses I80 at the Delaware Water Gap).

  • Don't know if anyone is interested, tunnel in the beginning is roseville tunnel in byram township nj, and the subsequent view of the farms appears to be on the pequest fill near andover boro nj

  • the most beautiful train by far. Can't wait for the day we see her ride the rails again (which we all hope will happen if and when the Cut-off gets restored)

  • I was actually listing to the Kalin Twins sing when while i was watching this video great video Long live the Lackawanna

  • Beautiful! very nice video and music. 5*!

  • Nice seeing this video and thank you for saving it and posting. These are scenes never to be repeated when railroads were in their prime. Now all we have is utilitarian junk and Amtrash to view. This was railroading at its best.

  • My ex wives were always telling me I had too much "Railroad Junk". Well, I had the number board from the 855 (Alco PA), recently sold it to my close friend who is an E-L freak. These videos are amazing. 16mm was always the best. Is the lettering BLACK on the cars? If so, I never knew THAT! BTW it's LES Brown. Only one "S"!

  • Nice job putting this together.

  • What have we lost with "progress"? That was a civilized way to travel!

  • The video, and the story of how it was found, is astounding. I believe it to be after 1955, due to fill along Anolomink Creek after Hurricane Diane. At 0:36 is Point of the Gap. Today it is a overlook in the park. At 0.44 is the profile of the Native American on Mt. Kittatinney. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing it.

  • @m5rematch its amazing to see all those spots that us railfanners frequent today. I thought that shots of East Stroudsburg and especially Cresco were awesome.

  • Now if we can just save the East Stroudsburg Pa station. Go to savedansburydepot

The record breaking ridership at Amtrak has produced 29 million EXTRA dollars which the company just used for a down payment on 130 new cars for LONG DISTANCE trains. July 23rd 2010. Will the next corridor to be developed be to Scranton?

  • I would like to know how many calls Amtrak gets everyday for points on the DL&W and LVRR. I was on train #48 a few weeks ago. No one got on at Rochester. They couldn't every seat was filled!! With no cars added, no one allowed to stand in the aisles because of reservations, we took off. What's going on here? I guess the oil companys are still running our transportation policy?

  • Railroad Junk? what a crime. I hope there are a lot more just like this...

  • The B&O was the only Eastern Railroad to feature dome cars on their passenger trains.

  • @jimboclinton Yes, too bad. We should work to get Amtrak funded so they can build NEW dome cars! And Tilt trains for the Poconos and those thousands of curves that slow conventional trains down.

  • A great video! Spectacular scenery. Is that the Tunhannock Viaduct the train is crossing at 0:31? I am a staunch NYC fan but I have always thought that before the E-L merger the Phoebe Snow was the best looking train in the east. Always a very neat looking consist from E-8 to Tavern Lounge Observations. Does M-N still own the Tavern Lounge Observations? I loved the scene with the little girl and her mom at the Cresco PA depot.

  • @TheCCCSTL Sorry, but the Viaduct at MP75 in the film at the New Jersey state line is the "Delaware Viaduct" Tunhannock is west of Scranton like MP152. M-N still has the Lounges. Cresco @ MP94.6 is east of Scranton is MP 135 The best part of the NYC were the branch lines very interesting operations. DL&W and NYC should have had domes. These trains will be back, I don't know when, but they will!

  • Phoebe Snow died an Erie death.

  • @jimboclinton What killed "Phoebe" and the connecting trains was the loss of mail revenue to highways. This was done by the highway lobby the same people who fight improvements to todays rail system. Today the cost of oil and all those trucks is one of the things killing the Post Office. If the mail were really put on Amtrak not just a few cars like years ago. I think Amtrak would make money and the Post Office would save alot of money too. But the road lobby would have a fit!

  • Anyone who wants to see this train restored should be a member of Erie Lackawanna dining car preservation society. eldcps search for that. And the National Association of Railroad Passengers NARP Washington, D.C.

  • Please don't forget to rate this video.

    Thanks,

    Len.

  • Absolutely amazing film!!! I never saw the Phoebe Snow in action before...Thanx!!!

  • kewl

  • Phoebe!! I wish i was around when it was running :(

  • The Erie Lackawanna dining car preservation society is working on restoreing the night train. If you want to help get this project moveing I sugguest you join them, You can buy soap, dishes, coffee models of the train today. Yes, you can enjoy part of the Phoebe Snow today. All proceeds go to restoreing equipment for you to ride and enjoy! Turn those wishes into action.

  • Beautiful footage!! Thank you!!

  • your welcome! The Late Mr Sage took this film and his family didn't want any of it. they referd it as his railroad junk.

    Len.

  • That's a tragic attitude, this footage is priceless!

  • Rode the Phoebe Snow when it was steam from Scranton, Pa. over the Nicholson Viaduct to Binghamton, N.Y. many times.

Took the overnight from Scranton to Chicago then on to Los Angles Calif. via Southern Pacific in July 1966. I believe the Phoebe Snow was canceled a few months later.

    Nice Video, Thanks.

  • My friend worked for Amtrak and for years he said "They got calls everynight for Scranton and West service." All they can say is no service, sorry

  • Nice musical selection by Les Brown with Doris Day.

  • Great train, great video, great singer what more can I say.

  • My first long distance train ride was on the PHOEBE SNOW from East Orange to Blairstown on my 5th birthday in 1952. Then even better all the way to Buffalo in 1956. The PHOEBE was an incredible day-light service, both fast and elegant, with the matchless mountains and river canyons/valleys that lined almost every mile. I still remember the unique corn-cob shaped corn muffins and the wonderful observation cars. This video is a true treasure! Many thanks!!!

  • 7 MILES OF TRACK ARE BEING LAID THIS sUMMER FROM pORT mORRIS TO gREENVILLE

  • Cool, that's nice to know. It's a shame Conrail tore it out in the first place.

    Len.

  • @Conrail6370 Conrail was in the middle of removeing the tie plates on the Pocono mainline when congress stopped them. By saying if it was done they would not get anymore money from the government! It stopped! Remember the 17 foot Conrail gap with chain link fence? I do!

  • @railfreek That's great...It was 976 miles to Chicago. So we only have 969 miles to go?

  • @railfreek port morris to andover, west of andover is pending funding from pennsylvania

  • Sig19 , Funding for what may I ask?

  • @Conrail6370 NJT is set to restore a 7 mile section of the Lackawanna Cutoff (shown in the begining of the vid) from their port morris yard to just west of the roseville tunnel to andover where they are building a new station. NJT is fully funding that portion of the cutoff restoration, but they sent me an email after I inquired about it stating that the restoration of track from Andover west into Pennsylvania is pending funding from pennsylvania.

  • @Conrail6370 i would guess the line from andover to slateford, as well as restoration on the Delaware River Viaduct

  • Great video. I grew up on the DLW in

Denville NJ in the 1950s. What a thrill to see those Es and the entire train. I remember the Sunday night baseball trains coming back from NYC. A large grouip of people would gather at the station to watch it return to Scranton.

  • Did anyone get the significance of the accompanying music?

"Sentimental Journey" by the Anthracite region's own "Les Brown and The Band of Renown" Les was from Tower City, Schuylkill County.

  • Don't forget slide rock curve! Most of the curves had names, Steam shovel, Mama Heater"s, Point of Gap, etc

That's why the new Phoebe Snow service must be a Talgo Tilt Train like the one running in Washington State. It would cut the travel time in half, by taking those curves at twice the speed of a regular train!

  • Better yet the should electrify the line all the way up to Scranton and Binghamton, making it a high speed line.

  • @improveyez I think a Tilt Train would be cheaper and faster. Then move on to Electric for "fast take offs" But this train crossed the state line of NJ and NY. And the feds only put money in highways. That's what "K" street people in Washington want and reward local Reps for!

  • Many of the scenes around the line still look the same such as the Interstate 80 Delaware Crossing. Hopefully the line will be in full service between New York/Hoboken, Scranton, and Binghamton sometime in the next decade.

  • Please add Syracuse, so I can catch the "Lake Shore Limited" to Chicago and Cleveland and the wild west. The return of the "Interstate Express" connection would be great too. Washington and Philly without going all the way into New York City or Newark from the west..

  • Kick ass. Imagine that, there used to be a REASON to go to Buffalo!

  • Thank you all for viewing this historical video, please to remember to rate this video.

    Take care,

    Len.

  • Even in the later days the Lackawanna was a classy organization. The ROW is well maintained and the trains are clean. Many of those shots, especially the single track are post flood repair. Thank you Conrail6370!

  • We you can see why he calls his production company, "Journey Back In Time" there's no one else on Youtube can match Conrail6370's class. He sure dose know how to bring out the history of any railroads past. Keep them coming Len.

  • Video is A One OK!

  • Thank you Robert Sage.

  • Hi all, please remeber to rate this video.

    Thank you,

    Len.

  • Cool clip Len, always good to see the Phoebe in action with Diner 740 and a Tavern Lounge bringing up the markers.

  • I believe the tunnel is the roseville tunnel in Byram, NJ. The first few minutes are all on the Jersey side... awsome vid

  • This is not the EL. This is footage taken before that mistake of a merger. The tunnel is indeed the Roseville Tunnel.

  • The merger of course should have been NKP+DLW. and The Milwaukee Road.

  • Ah... the EL.. Im a big fan of that railroad. to this day you can walk across the paulinskill viaduct freely!!

  • Just think the property taxes the EL paid on the Paulins Kill viaduct helped build Interstate 80. That put them out of business. Neat, huh? Also billions in ticket taxes spent on highways and airports. Presto! No trains!

  • This is a great film. I really enjoyed it. But I still have to look forward to the new rail services coming. The past can be depressing. Cause it's gone forever!

  • Holy crap! Diner 470! Nice clip

  • What is so special about Diner 470? I don't know much about the Lackawanna.

    Len.

  • Diner 470 is owned by the Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society, so it is possible to have it travel pass Cresco once again.

  • @eldiner as is Diner 469, but 469 will be restored as DL&W 469, while 470 will be restored as EL #770

  • Too bad you missed it. Diner 470 was great food at 80mph, 90 when they were late. Low prices. Just lots of good times with lots to see thru the picture windows.

  • wow this is a great film. This is Pre E-L too!!!! Hope to see more films of the E-L, DLW and Erie.

  • this is beyond belief!!!!!

  • "this is beyond belief!!!!! " What?

    Len.

  • the video, i cant believe im seeing this. it's amazing, priceless, historic. etc

  • What's going to be beyond belief is when we put this back together someday!

  • these all look like the old cutoff

  • Bingo!

  • 0:20 kinda looks like nay aug tunnel, but bigger

  • It can't be Nay Aug tunnel because it is further east than where the photographer gets off the train.

  • The tunnel must have been on the NJ side

  • It is, near Lake Tranquility.

  • Fantastic quality.

  • Thanks for stopping by,

I fix some of the color through my editing program.

If any who watch this video if you know where any of these scenes are please let me know.

And Please don't forget to rate this video.

    Len.

  • Gotcha. Here's what I can tell:

Leaving Dover at 0:10. Passing through the Roseville Tunnel at 0:17. Going over the Peaquest Fill at 0:27. Starting about 0:31 your're passing over the Delaware River bridge from New Jersey into Pennsylvania. That's the station at Delaware Water Gap, Pa at 0:58. I think that's Belle's Bridge at 1:02. Most definitely Stroudsburg-East Stroudsburg at 1:18. He gets off the train at Cresco.

  • right on the money

  • This is gold!
