Any reason those Glyn Johns mics aren't panned? Did this vid just not upload in stereo? Maybe I'm missing something. I love how amazing mics in a great room = great drum sound. Simple as that! Killer stuff. Also, tight drumming! You a session player?
I find making sure that your OH's are EXACTLY the same distance from the snare and kick makes a huge difference, (the snare sounds out of phase to me when you solo the OH's.) I take a piece of string from the center of the kick to one of the OH's then to the snare, mark the string where it meets the mic. If you don't move the string from the snare or kick you can place the second OH anywhere you want as long as it can be touched with the mark on the string the kick and snare will be in phase.
@danmarcelino The U95s actually have a variable polar pattern so it could be set to omni, cardioid, figure 8 or anything in between. Cardioid condensers would work fine for this set up.
I like it !Sow with this comfig mic your gold it is to capture tight direct sound...Hmm I am wandering the mixing fader how it s look for this ,because the room sound good treat or the room mics are pretty down low..hmmm!i would listen again..
Any Suggestions for acoustic treatment when recording drums in small rooms, say a room that's 10 feet by 12 feet? A mix of absorption and diffusion? More of one than the other? My room won't sound as good as yours but any advice would be appreciated.
@fattmudge That's a good question. Stay tuned to our channel in the next few weeks as we will be releasing a couple new video series, including one on acoustics and room treatment.
very helpful for those of us with limited mics, trying to get good sound until i saw the price of the stereo mics....(jeeez) i've been just using sm-57 for eveything & sometimes a drum machine click underneath........but placement here is the real issue ........finding those 'seet spots' that snare is so quiet & dampened....responds well
@SignatureSoundStudio may i also ask, what efffects were put on this track, im going to be tracking my bands drum tracks next week with some akg mics and a few sm57s, any tips for mic positions, and post tracking effects?
What kind of drum kit is that? It sounds wonderful.
Also, I am having a problem with recording toms, I am using a cheapo drum mic kit and am using mounts for the toms instead of having them on stands, I am picking up a bunch of ringy frequencies even though the heads are dampened quite a bit. Should I get seperate stands or am I doing something wrong?
@SomeGuyWithABucket The kit is a Yamaha. It's not a bad kit, but a lot of the wonderfulness your hearing comes from the room and the mics. As far as your ringing toms, try positioning them differently and/or back them off a little.
@Apathy91 The stereo pair of Soundelux U95 could be anywhere from $3-4K, but they have been discontinued and are harder to come by. The RE-20 is bout $430, and the SM-57 is $99.
The SM57s are only like 100 euro/pcs or somthing.

What snare are you using?

That mic setup costs more than the drums.

are there any suitable substitutes for the overheads besides the Soundelux mics that will do a decent job, yet don't cost as much?

isn't this called the "recorder man method"?
poshi12 1 month ago
@poshi12 I believe there is a similar method, the Glyn John's method, and that's the one they are using in the video

what polar pattern are those U95's set on? would a pair of cardioid condensers work well with this same set up?
i love your vids btw!! =D

@FrenchosaurusRex Yes, this can also be refered to as the Glyn Johns method.

@MrNightmah EQ and compression. Seriously... that's it. Thats 90% of what you'll ever need for drums.
