don't let it slip that you are a war lover or anything will you? Perhaps if you didn't talk as fast as a cruise missile then i might have picked up on something worth listening to. 2 main points that i managed to wrangle from this video > SSD drives are now fast > you don't like iraqis despite having some obvious partial eastern ethnic origin
The memory is just too little. I'm pushing like 1.4tb on my external drives, I wouldn't buy a drive with less than 300gb. I like the speed of the solid state, I just don't think they sizable enough.
Who cares about read and write sequential, random 4k writes is where it counts, and these drives suck suck suck :P get intel x25-m g2 and enjoy speed 4 or 5 times faster than this.
Do NEVER buy this patriot's piece of crap! It's much slower than my 3yo 7,200 2,5" HDD and it takes ages to install anything. During instalation your PC will get almost frozen.
Werez11. Try turning off prefetch. Google "ssd stuttering" for some help on turning off prefetch. Supposedly that takes care of 90% of stutters that are due to writing many small files (installation of most software). Also, getting a raid card that has cache should cure the problem.
the technology is early, it's going to have massive faults like that and it's going to be very unreliable overall - it's also going to store a lot less than hard drives and is going to cost a bomb - so don't bother. This SSD technology is still about 5 years away from being affordable, thus 5 years away from being actually 'available' and a viable replacement for the HDD.
With due respect, 5 years is very off. It depends on each individual user's usage. For many users, like me, 32GB is more than enough. The Patriot Warp 32GB costs less than x3 the average 80GB HDD, with about x3 the read speed (write speed is still fast, but needs adjustments to the OS - Windows 7 is supposed to be great for SSD's). It runs cooler, consumes less energy. It's a good upgrade for a laptop. My approximation is in 2 years SSD's will replace HDD's for laptops; 4 years for desktops.
More than enough!? 32GB is significantly less than adequate for many, many, many user's OS's (Vista), apps, and download needs. Especially if you use Adobe software. You need at least triple that.
There's no real big consumer urgency for SSD to replace HDD. Not while the capacity of them keeps growing and the prices remain cheap and get cheaper, the popularity of them stays high, and the current PC architectual technology remains compatible with HDDs. SSD's can't compete with the value for money per GB that HDD's offer and will continue to offer. SSD will be the more expensive/less popular alternative for a long time yet, similarly now with BD-R/DVD+R DL vs DVD-R.
The performance ability of HDD's has hit its plateau. It's no longer competitive in that area. Only way to increase it transfer rates is now primarily by increasing RPM (more noise and heat). GB/$ is increasing, but unless you have a server setup, anything over 1 TB is just impractical... if that HD crashes after years of usage, goodluck trying to recover the data. SSD's last 30+ years by current standards.
An HDD is about storage space first and that SSD's can't touch at an affordable rate and won't touch for some time. That's why you don't see the high end performance hard drives out swelling the cheaper GigaByte Per Pence drives out there. Storage is the selling point.
I will be able to recover the data because I have backups. At the prices HDDs are at, backups are cheap. That's how we avoid losing data. But HDD's are more reliable than you're making out. A well looked after HDD can last 30 years, lifespan depends on use and treatment.
With a massive amount of torrent sites on the web and the space of high definition content and all that shit, you can never have enough space, so having anything over 1 TB is even more convenient than having 1 TB or less, actually.
There's this little something called the DVD-R. It's really neat, you can store lots of GB's on it. Anyways, currently one can buy both a SSD and HDD, and use one for file storage, the other for loading games and booting the OS. That's the ideal setup for people who wants all the space AND the performance. I guess one can RAID0 several cheap HD's but I'm not down with all the heat and noise generated by that.
RAID is no good to protect against the frying of running components by hardware failure, which is why it's always better to avoid RAID and backup to an individually powered on and off external drive in different casing which uses a different power supply. RAID configurations are not energy efficient either.
HDD's are still better than SSD's for archival and updating of that archival storage. Overall, HDD's still peform better than SSD and they run very quietly these days. Mine do.
I have included all possible fixes into my system right after installation of fresh system and this Patriot is still the worst drive ever.
Prefetch is off, virtual memory as well, browser's cache is moved to ram-disk, additional disk cache is enabled and still it works like crap. It often freezes my system totally and it takes ages to install anything. Also maximum read speed is nowhere near promised 175MB/s.

what if you don't run it in raid more? I'm thinking about putting one of these in my eeepc 1000h, but I've read about studder issues if not used in raid mode with some kind of controller which provides a cache since those drives don't have their own cache... that would kinda suck :/
you mount them same as a HD, some just have drive rails. But do just stick with your HD, until they get much cheaper, with bigger storage space, then the Hitachi 7k1000.B HD. It has 1TB of space and only cost $89.99.

HD's are for the majority of people .. and SSD is for gamers/enthusiast .. END OF STORY..
Next time hit the reply button, it works great. I never said HD's where faster then SSD, just a better value for the money right now, as seeing how i can get a 1TB drive for $89. Also if Blu Ray is so great, why is Sony posting Huge net losses on it, along with the players, and PS3??
on a PS3??? a Blue Ray Disc is already 50GB in size, and they are working on a 200GB Blue Ray Disc, and cheap hard drives are already in the 1tb, and 1.5tb range. give me a break. untill the SSDs are in the 500GB range, and dirt cheap, most people and companies will not use them PERIOD.
The load times on my WD 205GB 7200RPM SATA drives are not that bad, not enough for me to complain, only HD i have that i can complain about is in my ACER AMD 3050 WinXP pro laptop, cause it's a 4200RPM 2.5in drive, but for what these cost right now, I think i can live with what i have. If anyone really wants to talk about load times Think about how far we have come sense the 80's and the Commodores where it took 5/6 mins to load a few KBs of Data
Seems like it would be great for an OS and some common apps, but I would use a SATA or IDE drive for internet browser cache, because of the level of writing temp files.
32 gig would be enough for that, than use SATA for all other things, that way you get a fast OS boot and all your common apps open closer to instantly.
uhm no. as SSD prices go down and sales go up, HDD will be bought/built less and get more expensive, just like DDR and DDR2. u do know DDR is more expensive than DDR2 nowadays ? and oh ye, no reason to call me a idiot is there ?
Ram prices, can sometimes go up and down, like the stock market. for example, a few years ago a plant in Japan had a big fire, that supplied some of the parts, for most all of the Ram manufactures, and the prices shot threw the roof. the Up/Down price of ram use to be a lot worse then it is now, but it still happens. I even see it happen from time to time with Flash cards/sticks, of different types. I am a CNBC/fox business/Bloomberg junkie, so i kind follow this stuff LOL.
i heard they always need electricity to hold their data or else they loose their data, is that right or is it bullshit? can someone tell me more or know a site all about ssd drives?
I get that part just fine, about the speed and such, but until they come in 500gb and, 1tb or more, and they are priced the same as the same size HD, then I personally feel most people building a PC will stick with a good SATA HD.
I never said my HD was fast then an SSD. I just think a HD is a better value right now then an SSD. you can get a 1TB Segate for $109, while the cheapest Patriot at 64GB is $159.99. That means i have more storage space, and $50 extra in my pocket to spend on other Parts for my PC like RAM, ETC.....
I never said that HDs are a worse value. The two drives are aimed at two different consumers; HDs are aimed at mainstream computer users, those who don't do anything hardcore; SSDs are aimed at the top-end consumer, those who buy top-of-the-line equipment and need a fast, stable hard drive to match. Gamers don't use all that much space, my computer with tons of stuff on it is only using 61GB, and most of it is stuff I don't even really use. A SSD would be great for commonly used apps and your OS
You made it seem that way. A lot of hardcore guys are still using HD's, and just cause it's SSD, does not mean it's top of the line, kind of like saying cause it's a Sony it's top of the line, far as space, just my music files take around 6gig's, and alot of games these days are taking 1 - 2gigs of space for an install if not more. HardCore or not in a desktop HD's are still better.
I dont know if there are any external ones out so far.
The main difference between SSDs and HDDs are that SSDs arent using any moving parts, at all. That makes them alot faster with its reading/writing then normal harddrives, apart from a few ones.
Thats why they are good to use to keep your OS and programs on, it goes faster for the computer to find whatever it's searching for to open the program up and such.
Just look at the performance difference between normal ones and SSDs and youll see.
Shame the price is of a small car and relatively small capacity. If I had no money worries, I'd go out and buy 4 of the Intel extreme ones, crazy speeds on them! o0
i know man but they were saying the same thing last year :( lol people want at least the 120gb version decent write and read speeds.. thats still buuucks grr
yeah but with the smaller ones that are out at the moment you could install your OS and a few of your fave games so the important stuff loads fast atleast.
good point :P for desktop comps yeh thats possible but not in a laptop or netbook where you generally have 1 primary drive. Im actually waiting for a decent large SSD for my netbook.. i probably wait another year for my desktop SSD thou.
Useless sized overpriced SSD shit ya have. Come back to me when you have reasonably priced SSD's at capacities of 150GB's or larger. Until then, Fuck Off with trying to push rinky-dink SSD's on us. (o_O) That's right, I said it.
-_- I probably won't buy one until the prices are still much further down on the higher capacity SSD's. I mean i have 250GB HDD that's still running fine after about 5 years. I would rather upgrade to a 620GB or 640GB(somewhere in the 600GB range) HDD than spend a lot more on an SSD for around 250GB.
"Funny" doesnt mean you can make fun out of bombing someone's home or lives altogether. Showing an example should not be an example of destruction. How would it be, if he said, "send a missile to White house", would it be proper or would the citizens or anyone who trusts in humanity agree to this statement? that's not only sarcastic I would say, but a full fledged expression of what he feels as right in destructing someone else's home and country. wont u agree?
BUT that damn music at the start with that weird eye drives me crazy i always mute the 1st 15 sec and stop the video when the music starts at the end starts
please if you can would you be so nice as to make a new opening and closing sound track
i've seen that.but i wanan see his new one with the core i7 and the gtx295s T-T. the video ur talking about he''s also building it in his office right?seen it.i just bought that soundcard he uses^.^ ,it's very good actually^.^
dude look for this video called tech quickie by tigerdirectblog...he shows his cool pc on that video with tri sli 280 ssc s and other cool stuff including his ftw evga 790i ultra mobo and cosmos s etc its really cool ... and i kow cause im a great or da greatest fan of albert
connecting different HDD with eachother. the most important are : RAID 0: 2HDD are connected to eachother and the speed is higher and you get both drives capacity.
RAID1: mirroring 2 HDD's, all files are in both drives. so if one HDD fails then you still have the other one as a backup.
I heard the failure rate in this are quite high

When they get to be 500Gb in size and cost as little as a typical 7200 rpm 500Gb drive then I'll be excited with SSD drives. Until then... nah
Skott62 3 years ago
DANGIT I WANT A SSD! My desktop is sooo crappy. If I can use this on it, this would be a real miracle. But I'm only using a laptop right now. =/

anyone know from experience if these SSDs heat up much at all?
mattrauch81 3 years ago
They don't he said...
heleinator 3 years ago
I dont know if there are any external ones out so far.
The main difference between SSDs and HDDs are that SSDs arent using any moving parts, at all. That makes them alot faster with its reading/writing then normal harddrives, apart from a few ones.
Thats why they are good to use to keep your OS and programs on, it goes faster for the computer to find whatever it's searching for to open the program up and such.
Just look at the performance difference between normal ones and SSDs and youll see.
Glasseh 3 years ago
It's mainly to keep your OS and main programs on. Just use normal harddrives for other, information stuff.
And SSD's are still pretty expensive.

Shame the price is of a small car and relatively small capacity. If I had no money worries, I'd go out and buy 4 of the Intel extreme ones, crazy speeds on them! o0

£300 for 64gb is not cheap. since waiting for substantial price before they completely are mainstream... same goes with Bluray burners
shaolindreams 3 years ago
Yah but everything is going down in prices...
I remember seeing a 32GB SSD for $1000USD....
iTzSWAT 3 years ago
i know man but they were saying the same thing last year :( lol people want at least the 120gb version decent write and read speeds.. thats still buuucks grr
shaolindreams 3 years ago
yeah but with the smaller ones that are out at the moment you could install your OS and a few of your fave games so the important stuff loads fast atleast.
TheDarkFalcon 3 years ago
good point :P for desktop comps yeh thats possible but not in a laptop or netbook where you generally have 1 primary drive. Im actually waiting for a decent large SSD for my netbook.. i probably wait another year for my desktop SSD thou.
shaolindreams 3 years ago
yeah all iv been seeing is 2.5" ones =[ where are the larger size ones, i thought they would be cheaper and have greater volume

Useless sized overpriced SSD shit ya have. Come back to me when you have reasonably priced SSD's at capacities of 150GB's or larger. Until then, Fuck Off with trying to push rinky-dink SSD's on us. (o_O) That's right, I said it.
HLuna52180 3 years ago
-_- I probably won't buy one until the prices are still much further down on the higher capacity SSD's. I mean i have 250GB HDD that's still running fine after about 5 years. I would rather upgrade to a 620GB or 640GB(somewhere in the 600GB range) HDD than spend a lot more on an SSD for around 250GB.

SSD's would be king but the capacity is horrible, if i could get them at 320GB, 500GB, 640GB, ot 750GB's i don't care the price i would have it!

It is not funny chickenrice!!
It is spelled sarcastic.
omarcards 2 years ago
what do you mean by that?
i know he was being sarcastic but it was still funny
Chickennrice02 2 years ago
"Funny" doesnt mean you can make fun out of bombing someone's home or lives altogether. Showing an example should not be an example of destruction. How would it be, if he said, "send a missile to White house", would it be proper or would the citizens or anyone who trusts in humanity agree to this statement? that's not only sarcastic I would say, but a full fledged expression of what he feels as right in destructing someone else's home and country. wont u agree?
omarcards 2 years ago
oh my mistake lol
Chickennrice02 2 years ago
I agree, it was a pretty stupid example to give. What can you do, some people just need educating I guess.

can somebody please explain to me what is RAID 0 .... RAID 1 .... What is RAID ?
aqueel82 3 years ago
RAID is responcible for back-ups like save data for a game it will make a back-up
guns102 3 years ago
connecting different HDD with eachother. the most important are : RAID 0: 2HDD are connected to eachother and the speed is higher and you get both drives capacity.
RAID1: mirroring 2 HDD's, all files are in both drives. so if one HDD fails then you still have the other one as a backup.
egetunks 3 years ago 2
really cool... but there are HDD that have more space that's cheap....
atlaschooty 3 years ago
HDD's arent SSD's, u cant really compare prices at this time, in a year or 2 they should be about the same price/space level
