In my case, I am not religious and I would be in a civil union with my wife, but I would use the term "Married" as a slang term only. In my case, I am not religious and I would be in a civil union with my wife, but I would use the term "Married" as a slang term only. Now whether or not we should make our laws based on religious grounds, that's another issue. Anywho, Civil Unions for same sex marriage should do for now. (Personally I'd want to get rid of the word 'marriage' altogether and stick with civil unions for everyone, gay or not.)

The word marriage has taken on a life of its own in our culture, beyond its religious background, behond the law. It is about love and dedication and family and connectedness. It is certainly not a just religious word! It's a word that has come to stand for ideals; we need that in our culture. But while it is kept for some people and not for all people, the ideals are not being upheld.

obama said that he does not believe in gay marriage but he also doesn't believe that he should impose his beliefs on others.
simply put: he would support gay marriage even though he wouldn't personally like it.
