Inara does use her considerable talents to help the crew in a few episodes. But she would never use sex to manipulate someone. She's just not that kind of person, no matter who is paying her what or who has a gun to her head.
I've seen people use this on message boards and forums so many times and never understood why people kept on using for that particular sort of thing. Now I know.
@rowan729 Companions are part of the social elite in the Firefly universe, therefore, having one on board provides extra income (Inara is paying rent on the shuttle) and allows the crew access to areas and information they otherwise wouldn't have by using her for diplomatic and recon' purposes. For instance, she could get into some rich bloke's (or woman's) house, find where a bunch of valubles are, have sex with person, tell Mal where stuff is, take rich folk out to a party and Mal breaks in.
@AnkokuEvangeline If the series had continued they may well have done. I was suggesting a possible alternative use for having a companion on board. I have seen Firefly so I do know that she stayed out of the thieving as much as possible in exchange for Mal staying out of her whoring (although they did use her as a fallback plan when they helped Saffron steal the Lassiter)
@heyy13 The episode right at the end of the series when they are helping Inara's freinds, they are described as "whores" because they are not licensed companions, they are still doing business. Also, she was in love with Mal (hence why she was so pissed off that he fucked her whore friend) and may well have broken the law in order to help him and, if she just got the person out the house, she could claim that she had nothing to do with the theft using a loophole that she didn't know about it.
@randomface54 Yeah but that's my point. You see how badly they're treated? That's almost solely because they're not licenced. Inara wouldn't want that.
@heyy13 The whores in that episode, including the Madame, were origionally licensed, but left because of some ethical schism. Given Inara's position on Serenity, had the series continued, she may have been put in that position and may have taken it due to her love for Malcom. Also, it was only that one twat who was giving them problems, apart from that, they weren't being treated particually badly.
@rowan729 said:"I dont get the point of haveing a legal prostitute onboard?"
she is actually renting "space" on the ship. she owns a small runaboat decked out like a pleasure room, the runabout is docked to the larger trading ship so she can have a large circuit of clients.
@Bladerunner93 It's ADORABLE how fascinated Kaylee is with this situation. I love how she can be so sweetly naïve and yet so sexually open-minded. My favorite female character OF ALL TIME.
@MARGARELON a scene from Firefly. It was a sci fi series, written by Joss Whedon (Buffy/Angel, Toy Story) that was canceled in it's first season and gained a cult following. so much so that it was turned into a feature film named Serenity (name of the ship)
If you like well written Sci Fi with great characters rent the series and movie. Or just buy it straight out cuz after you've seen it that's what'll end up happening :P
@panther2552 thats exactly what happened to me. long after the movie was in video rental, i saw the movie, fell in love with the characters and got the whole series. it hurts my brain that this wasnt given the chance to find an audience. its sooooo bloody good. i want to bitch slap the tv exec that cancelled it.

@rowan729 because in the future companions are considered high-class. It's like how famous people always get tables at a restaurant.
