  • Wo bu ming bai ta de hua yu! Oh well...

  • It's such a great homage to Busby Berkeley, it'll tear your heart right out of your chest and hold it up in front of pagan followers, still beating. Wait... no, that's a later scene.

  • CLassic

  • The movie is on USA right now. Awesome song but I prefer the original.

  • Lady only here, because humping director

  • Fap fap fap fap fap fap fap fap fap.... Faaaaaap. Fap, fap fap. Fap.

  • Sorry but they should have got a real Chinese person to sing it. It's so mangled. I can't even understand it.

  • Simply one of my favourite movies ever. Whenever I watch this intro, all I can think of is the dark, violent, breath-taking adventure that I'm about to be treated to ;)

  • For those people who can't enjoy a semi- decent video I say this.

Is the point of the the opening the lyrics other than anything goes? If it was, it wouldn't be in Chinese. It would be in ENGLISH! Your brain is in your head not your hand.

  • Lots of white folks in 1935 China..

  • My schools doing anything goes and I was just chillin watching indie -3 and started freakin out lol and agreed she's much better a singer then actor

  • best indy movie

  • You know, I was quite intrigued by her singing, but unfortunately her acting kinda sucks.

  • Best.....intro........EVER!

  • That intro is still the best

  • Cole Porter tune. Kate is actually better at singing than she is at acting.

  • I had a big crush on Kate Capshaw when I was a kid. I think that is one of the reasons I loved watching Temple of Doom.

  • "Okey-dokey Docta Jones, hode on to yo potetos!"

  • Ms Kate showed some ass cleavage even before it became fashionable.

  • She's only in the movie because she's banging Spielberg.

  • I just realized that the original version of this song was in Fallout 3. (I know next to nothing about music from that era.)

  • Busby Berkeley-inspired dance number with one of Cole Porter's best songs. Wonder whether they had to pay the performers!

  • i love how light hearted and friendly this movie starts... then it goes dark and violent, and i still loved it. my favorite jones movie without a doubt.

  • @interpol85 It's my fave, too. It starts with this song to foreshadow how the action is going to be wild and over-the-top, and the movie delivers on that. But the humorous excess of the action might not go along with the dark, harrowing qualities of some events in the movie. Still, I love it for how it goes out on a limb and is more intense.

  • wow.......just...........wow

  • Thumbs up if this was the first time you heard this song and like it better in Mandarin.

  • wtf is she speaking

  • @thedeathskittle Mandarin I believe.

  • @thedeathskittle

wtf is it with your disrespectful reaction? by now you still find it surprising that there are other languages besides English in the world? as for the strange way it sounds, English sounds just as fucked up to speakers of other languages.

  • @AlexBrasil123123 lol. no. I find it disrespectful that she is speaking another language so poorly

  • @thedeathskittle Well she is an american actor, playing a ditsy blond. so mispronouncing a translated song in mandarin is both essential to her character, and would be the natural outcome of a non native speaker trying to learn a foreign language.

  • Me encantaba !!!

  • BEST INTRO........EVER!!!!!!!!

  • It's a homage to Busby Berkeley from Spielberg.

  • just a few things... you can tell it's her singing just from the sound of the voice, which I think sounds lovely especially in a language that she doesn't even know! another thing is... ok, i'm not all for bastardizing someone else's language or culture, but it's a movie why are we freaking out about the accuracy of her singing in a different language in a movie that's 27 years old?! Just watch and enjoy!

  • Spielberg should do a full time musical...

  • If you're going to make a movie with foreign elements in it and you don't even bother to do your homework on simply hiring a translator then I don't know what to say, obviously there was more important places to spend that multimillion dollar budget.

  • @spokar1 um what? I never said the MOVIE was bad, just her Chinese, which really is bad if that's what she's attempting to say, that is an objective fact, she is not speaking Chinese she is just making Ching chang chong noises which I find retarded.

  • @Chocolateholics101 You serious? Wow, lmao, that's pretty terrible. I'm embarrassed to say that for all these years I've just assumed she was speaking real Chinese.

  • @Chocolateholics101 I've seen old behind the scenes footage. She worked with a Chinese language coach to "perfect" the lyrics in the song.

  • love this!! Nashville, TN is where I am

  • I love the last few words she sais

  • what the helll!?! I don't remember this happening at all

  • BEST MOVIE INTRO EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • One of my alltime fave scenes from a movie and of course "Indiana Jones"....i love it!

  • Lol i rented this on netflix, heard this song when i was playing fallout and i was like "i know this song from somewhere" XD

  • @meeee46 That's because she sings in Cantonese. There's a difference, you know.

  • @BlueCougar This is not in Cantonese, no matter what the subtitles might tell you.

  • look out for "Ultimate broadway" opens Shanghai...soon!!!

  • My favorite scene of the movie!

she is beautiful,my aunt looks like her and a bit like kirsten dunst too^^

  • anything goes, indeed! Who would have thought this to be an opening to an indy flick? Oh yeah, mister 1941 himself.

  • that's Steven Spielberg's wife, Kate Capshaw

  • The reason the audience can't see the tap dancing sequence is because it takes place in her imagination... she wished to be a Rockette and instead she ended up working at the Skywalker Lounge in Shanghai!

  • @adriangiannotta nearly 30 years since this has been made and i NEVER thought of that...thanks.

  • @adriangiannotta actually, it's called Club Obi Wan.

  • @adriangiannotta

You mean it isn't just stock footage to pad the movie's brief run time?

  • Comment removed

  • @adriangiannotta Club Obi Wan you mean. And Steven Spielberg even said that he had always wanted to direct a musical number . He never once mentioned anything about the storyline or a dream sequence. Sometimes cheesy froth is just cheesy froth. Watch this video "watch?v=Xp8QrLlujkc". It's the behind the scenes stuff. ( I know it so well it's unreal lol)

  • @adriangiannotta It was Club Obi-Wan, not Skywalker Lounge

  • @adriangiannotta Obi Wan lounge. They make the best Darth Vaders in town.

  • @adriangiannotta whoa.. so thats what it was all about.. I was curious.. mind blown..

  • 0:10

its like the directors just saying 'fuck indiana jones, she has nice boobs'

  • If only every movie started like that, Indy be Praised

  • "Lady only here because she do director."

  • @JPKocher Actually, lady not marry director until seven years later...

  • I think the people who can't enjoy this movie for what it is ... should be banned from ever watching it ... so what if the pronunciation doesn't make sense ... This is Indiana Jones for cryin' out loud !! Just enjoy it ! if you want to play critic ... produce your own films THEN feel free to criticise it however way you want ... m'kay ?

  • This has got to be the worst "chinese" someone actually attempted to say. If they hired a random Chinese guy to translate the lyrics he could've saved the trouble and just let her make up some ching Chung chong noise impromptu because serious that is what she is actually saying anyway.

  • @Chocolateholics101 **facepalm** you have got to be kidding or you just "trolling" ?? if you don't like it why did you watch it and take the trouble to look this particular music up on youtube and comment on it ? wait... I just have to do a double facepalm ... and you are pretty ignorant ! This is Indiana Jones ... not an indie movie ! duh !!

  • @lucas5665 I think you got the sixth "dao" wrong... ;-)

  • @BlueCougar Most of this I got from a site, I just made some tweaks at the end

  • Comment removed

  • Apparently this is in Mandarin, but my friend who was born in China and speaks fluent Mandarin said she couldn't understand a word of this. Could this actually be in Cantonese? or does she just have poor pronunciation?

Anyone who speaks Mandarin or Cantonese want to help me out here?

  • I don't think much effort was put into getting the pronunciation or even lyrics translated into proper Chinese.

probably Lucasfilm just grabbed a chinese guy who works for them, and ask him

to tranlate the song into chinese and write down transliteration of chinese lyric in English on piece of

paper so that she can sing it.

when this was released back in 1980's China was not really considered a market for Hollywood movies.

so chinese audiences' reaction wasn't really any consideration.

  • @simhopp its a 2 min song in a 2 hour movie lol

  • @paydafee Still, it's still a movie you should put as much work into one part of the film as you with another.

  • @lucas5665 thing with mandarin is that there are four tones which when singing are hard to iterate properly .

impossible to tell what she's saying unless you have the actual characters or the pinyin .

    just sayin .

  • i feel like watching Indiana Jones now!

  • "Mola Ram! Prepare to meet Kali... in hell!"-Indiana Jones

  • I plan to scare my friends next time we watch this movie by singing along in English lol

  • I think its safe to say Kate didn't sing this. Speilberg definately didn't marry her for her talent. Notice how she vanishes when the real dancing begins LOL.

  • @toscodav She most certainly did sing this. And she most certainly can dance. The reason she didn't here is because the dress got half-eaten by an elephant, had to be thrown back together at the last minute, and was made of rather non-flexible material. Of course Spielberg didn't marry her for her talent. He married her because he *loved* her. Try getting your facts straight before you talk uncalled-for trash.

  • So they redid the choreography of this scene at the last minute also? Dress half eaten by an Elephant?

Reminds me of when I was a kid and told the teacher my dog ate my homework.

Hard to believe a Billion dollar studio with a huge wardrobe dept had to throw something together.

  • @toscodav I could argue further, but it would seem an argument is exactly what you want.

The dress wasn't all that flexible before the elephant ate it, by the way.

Watch the special features on the DVDs and try paying attention.

    LOL

  • Why am I looking for an argument?

Your the one that responded to my comment remember?

  • @toscodav he married her!!??

  • thumbs up if you wish this was one of the songs on the GNR station on Fallout 3

  • @frosheet actually, the original song, 'Anything Goes' by Cole Porter is on the GNR station. This is a 'chinese' translation of it.

  • @ubahootahv3 Yeah and you're completely right. I always just liked this version better =P

  • @ubahootahv3

Yes, and from what I've heard the Chinese themselves can't understand a single word she's saying. Apparently she just learned the words by reading them from a piece of paper, and there really was no time to hone her skills in Cantonese or whatever language they officially use in China.

Steven Spielberg later attributed this to the Willie Scott character being generally clueless and thus sang "Anything Goes" with a dreadful Chinese.

  • @frosheet it was!

  • Way did they have to ruin a great scene with big bold titles.

  • In his homage to Busby Berkeley, Steven Spielberg created the most entertaining opening to any movie I have ever seen. The banquet scenes in the maharajah's palace where they dined on "chilled monkey brains" etc., were amongst the grossest.

  • !!!! ;)

  • this is the only part of temple of doom i let my little cousin watch

  • this is about as gay as christmas.

    love it.

  • I SO want to learn this the chinese lyrics to this song! how cool!

  • Still the best opening of a movie!

  • Great opening to the great movie. Spielberg must have had some fun with this.

  • the whole scene is soooo kitsch but that's why i love it... the name of HF appears when KC raises her hands and she's in front of the title. simply perfect. and after such a glorious entry when the actual song starts they begin to sing and dance in a so "funny" way :D

  • Her pronunciation is shit, but I can discern the following: Yiwang siwa (In the old days, silk stocking) .... blah blah blaah... xinli (mentality)...blah blah... jing (surprising)... blah blah... tian zhidao (heaven knows), Anything Goes!

  • @criskity So she actually is attempting to speak Chinese? I've heard rumors it's some really rare dialect is that true?

  • @Wolfan00 Apparently it's just ordinary Mandarin Chinese, but pronounced terribly. Though Indy briefly speaks to the gangsters in the Shanghai dialect.

  • So the audience couldn't actually see the part with the girls dancing in silver? I'm confused spatially.

  • @danshinitro ikr wats the whole point exactly!? its like putting a bug up barbara streisands nose. u know its happening but u will never see it.

  • @danshinitro You're right, the audience in the club couldn't see the girls dancing in the credits sequence. But it's a MOVIE and what's the name of the song? ANYTHING GOES!!!!! That's the theme of the whole outrageous film! Over the top and totally fun.

  • @JohnWesleyDowney Oh is it a movie? Thanks champ I didn't notice.

  • @danshinitro

I believe that back stage thing is Kate's character's day dream sequence.

ie, what she really wants to be. back in USA, Hollywood filming musical number on an extravagant set.

where as in reality, she is in Shanghai (which is a cultural back water in her mind) on small

    stage of a night club.

  • were i can find the lyrics of these song???

  • Scaled down Busby Berkeley number but still fabulous. Berkeley used 200 tap dancers in Gold Diggers of 1935 which can be seen on YT

  • it's funny/weird how this is the only movie in the series where the Indiana Jones logo is used at the start in the title card

  • kate capsaw watched this back and was like

    "im marring the director"

  • love this... Epic movie, lovely song

  • True Americanness = Cole Porter, Leonard Bernstein, Lerner & Loewe, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Mel Brooks

Forget Justin Bieber, Eminem, Miley Cyrus and HSM!

  • @hugh0221

    Don't forget Busby Berkley!

The choreography of Spielberg's extravaganza dance number is an unmistakable tribute to Busby Berkley's set pieces in 30s and 40s musicals.

  • I love it but it always strikes me as an incredibly light opening for what turns into a pretty violent film. I mean, you'd never think a film opening with a musical number, would reach a point where someone's heart is ripped out of their chest!

  • @TheConciseStatement

That is why the number is "Anything Goes'!

  • Oh my god it's the song from Fallout 3!

  • @DaBananaHammock this is actually a new version which for now is like very old.. but the older / original one was used in Fallout 3...

  • @rheographics Oh I realize that. It's the same song but a different arrangement. That's what I meant.

  • @DaBananaHammock Haha okok i play fallout too.. at first i didnt realise.. but later on i was thinking hmm where this i hear this from... for the longest time and when i remembered this song i was like omg! Indiana Jones is my favourite childhood film :D

  • Zing choù chí ŵútàbatínõ éxing Chou tu la man õu

  • Fabulous in any language!

  • Nice try, Lao Che! :)

  • I ended up here because I got stunned finding out that her daughter is Jessica Capshaw of Grey's Anatomy! The mom of Arizona Robbins! Haha.

  • music by master composer john williams, grandious!!

  • @Frederik5495 well, actually Irving Berlin wrote this song. It's from the musical "anything goes"

  • @Beejeification

yeah, i know that this song is not really composed, but nice arranged and orchestrated by john williams :)

  • @Beejeification

Well, actually you are wrong. The great Cole Porter wrote Anything Goes (not Irving Berlin)

  • Thumbs up if brought here by Limmy!!!

  • One of the best, and certainly the most outright fun, movie openings of all time. In fact the first twenty minutes are damn near perfect. (I love the rest of the picture, too, though I must admit, I know it has it's reasonable critics.)

  • it's not gibberish. i understood some of it. it's mandarin though, not cantonese. so props to spielberg.

  • Fallout 3 would have been really cool if they had this version instead of the old rag tag version in the game.

  • Comment removed

  • Stewie says " Lady only hear cause she humping director".

  • I have to say, that this is my all time fav musical scene in the whole world!!!

  • Awesome homage to 30's musicals. The opening to Raiders is probably "better," but for my money, I will always like this better.

  • I love the part where the lady starts screaming then everyone runs!

  • I love this song soooooo much

  • sure as hell don't make em like they used to... :(

  • I love musical openings! A great beginning to one of my favourite movies of all time!!!

  • I always loved how impossible this stage is when the camera finally shows the set. I miss movies like this.

  • 1:47 - 1:52 incredible! i wish i could do the splits! T_T

  • This is why movies from the 80's are great

  • I've seen this movie 5011 times and I just noticed that there are about 3 black women dancing in the tap sequence. Awesome! Lol See, that's what happens when you watch a movie over and over, you start to notice every little detail!

  • @bkcalvine It was all gibberish? That's good to know! So when I was a little kid singing this and acting it out in front of the tv I was singing the correct words! Haha :)

  • LOL she's not speaking Chinese at all. My grandpa speaks Mandarin, so I know a little bit, and I'm pretty sure she's speaking gibberish. LOL.

  • @JakesNotDrinking

Heh. I know a little Mandarin and I assumed this was Cantonese (which I don't know at all.) I guess I gave the filmmakers too much credit. I guess if they can't portray India remotely accurately, they wouldn't portray China correctly.

(And then there's the third movie, with its strange notions about medieval European history, but that's another topic altogether...)

  • Its time for Spielberg , Lucus and Williams to get off their money piles and make more movies that are timless...

  • Not to nitpick, but is the sound a little fast?

  • The dancers are clones. :P

  • Anyone notice how she loses her balance at around 0:56 ? She covers it up well haha.

  • @TheAle89515 No, I think she is stepping up onto the small platform. The area is raised right there.

  • I allways love this opening

  • Anything goes? You're damn right anything goes!

  • So that whole dance number with the 20 girls was all going on behind the main stage where no one could see it and only served to give her the giant red sheet to run out with?

  • @Ninvus2

    30 blonde girls, not 20.

that is a dream sequence, what the kate capshaw character wishes.

she doesn't like singing in Shanghai, she wants to go back to broadway

or Hollywood and make it big.

  • @simhopp

Interesting. Never knew it was meant as a "dream sequence".

I also always thought that Willie Scott was a has-been or a naive woman with big dreams who never managed to reach the top in neither Broadway nor Hollywood. Plenty of those in reality. She was offered a nice sum of money by Lao Che in order to appear in Shanghai and there she still thinks she is some world class star.

Kate Capshaw herself loathed the character and thought her to be truly insulting for all women.

  • wowow i rememebr this song from fallout 3 :)

  • @evilone89

I was just playing and heard it on the Galaxy radio..had to do a double take cause it sounded really familiar;remembered it from this.

  • Haha I'm only 19 and this series has made me feel so old. Grew up watching these movies again and again :)

  • Too much to drink, Dr Jones?

  • @SpinKicksusplits86 You just made me Lol. I text my sister random quotes from this movie every now and then. That was one of them! I brighten her day with my silliness. We know this movie inside and out!

  • God, I love this song -- even if I don't understand the Chinese lyrics.

  • @JixMus Neither does any Chinese person I ever asked. I suspect Kate Capshaw just made it all up.

  • @velaro3 lol that would be hilarious if Kate Capshaw just improvised this whole song.

  • AHHHHHHH GET OUT OF MY HEAAAAAD

  • Only Speilberg could properly establish the tone for a dark second movie with a musical number...in Mandarin.

  • Che qualità superba !

Fossero tutti così i video su YouTube !

    Grazie mille !

  • @roboroschi Grazie - in colpevole ritardo - a te per il commento.

  • @Timemachine62 No se preocupe...

  • The best Indy opening ever. I know a lot of people don't like Temple of doom because of the subject matter but this opening is epic. How cool is it that she actually sang it in Mandarin?

  • Temple of Doom is my favorite Indy movie for many reasons, this incomparable intro is one of them!!!

  • Call me pink pantied, girlie, dickless, I don't care, this intro is so damn awesome I'll never ever get tired of it. Love the pose at the big beat at 1:13 from the girls in the back!
