Thanks for the wonderful tip about blowing on white crackle pieces...it all makes sense now. I have had some really amazing effects using this technique!
ohhh thanks for the tip via the video! i can never seem to get my crackle to come out evenly but i LOVE crackle i use it on almost every single piece, ether alone on a part or underneath something
now i just gotta build up my strength to be able to hold the tongs that long... or make my pieces lighter hehe
Yeah, I really can't take credit for the tip. It's an old Gordon Hutchins technique. I saw him do it on a video once and it worked so well that it's now the only way I get my pieces to craze the way I want. Blow on that sucker! (but not too close)
Yes...a little explanation of what's happening would be great! When you're blowing on the pot what is happening? Very nice work and glad to see you using a Lo-Tech kiln.
Blowing on the pot forces 'crazing' (crackles) in the glaze and makes the pattern very uniform. Just have to learn to keep your lips away. Ceramic fiber blanket lines the inside of the kiln, so it's actually quite 'Hi-tech'...If you can get over the fact that it looks like a trashcan. In my real life as a ceramic artist, I actually use a much bigger raku kiln.
Did you make that small raku kiln? If so, would you mind sending me some info to build one for myself. I have a small space in my basement that I use for throwing and firing (Skutt 17" I.D. electric kiln), but I'd really like to try some raku in my backyard. I would appreciate any info you could offer. Thanks, Ken
Thanks...I did check out the website and have started locating the materials. I was able to find the CFB and the propane burner. The burner is a little pricey (+ - $190). I'm really excited to try this.
Excellent use of copper I have always troubling in achieving that affect and I love the traditional white crackle awesome reduction and your Forms Kick ass
well done.

EEEeeek! - You should be able to find one for around $50-60! Did you try WardBurner systems?
Google them!

So that would be bad, then?

Do you ever have the urge to stick your tongue on them when they come out?

OK, Yes! This is the same as the other video. This one, however, has the results of the firing after the video.

WOW, that is neat. I wish you would explain more of what is happening with the pots and the process.
