This is certainly a brilliant performance. The tempo is a little too fast for my liking. I'm not sure that it could be played this fast on the harpsichord of Bach's day. This performance is certainly a tour de force and my congratulations go to the young soloist and to the orchestra for keeping it all together successfully. Baroque tempos are based on the heart beat and in Bach's polyphony the emphasis is on the satisfying working out of a motif rather than virtuosity as such. Am I wrong???
@gerardbedecarter I think these players sound ragged at this tempo. But on UTube you will find polished period instrument performances of this same work at a similar tempo. So why do you think it couldn't be played this fast on the harpsichord of Bach's day? You say Baroque tempos are based the heartbeat. Whose hearbeat? Yours, mine or Bach's? Bach's 2nd son said his father like fast tempos! What motifs can you not hear at this tempo?
Actually this piece is kinda hard to mess up with fast or slow tempo as long as it's kept consistent and articulated well (as here). I kind of enjoy variety and the faster tempo occasionally serves it's purpose. Love Glen Gould's also.
Music is never too fast or too slow . It becomes that new state the players have given to it if they obey its new rules . It is simply not that all music stays the same this is an easy way to change a character who was once this way or that now he is like this .Sometimes the players haven't notice the real difference .Their lies the problem!
Bach had a concept of the "tempo guisto", and it is just too unfortunate that I don't hear any of it in this performance. In my opinion, Bach just isn't Bach anymore if the brilliance of the construction of the music can't shine through via the the player's interpretation
A comment --""to fast" , "to slow""is a typical, not very brigt fraze for pepople who doesn't know about music much. This performance is full of energy and positive vibes (for me).Thankyou
Not only is this NOT too fast, it is blindingly beautiful. This kid has got the juice. He's one in ten million or more. Bach needs speed to liven it up. Much as I love Bach, I hate to hear it drag (see Wanda Landowska). The response makes it clear that these people know what they just listened to.
El chico tiene talento pero esta mal dirigido, este movimiento es allegro no presto, aqui el papel de la mala dirección esta presente por eso no luce el concierto , bach es belleza e inteligencia no virtuosismo mal enfocado.
A very nice performance. I really don't think baroque is your best vehicle, though. It is far too structured and you are a passionate and powerful pianist that needs room for greater expression. Classical, romantic and neo-classical suit your style better in my opinion. I love you doing Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt where your power shines through.
Very nice.

this concerto will always be haunted by Gould's vision / performance version.

Not to sure why you got a couple of "thumb downs" Minasgekos. Your comment is accurate; nothing insulting or degrading about it.
