Something I dislike about the automatic transmission is the fact that it doesn´t have 2nd gear, as other Volvo models, which is quite important when you drive uphill and downhill (montanious roads). Bisides that, the S90 its a beatiful car. Becareful with the cooling system, which is prone to fail.
IF THE SUBARU FATZILLA SALES MAN SEATS IN THIS VOLVO ROYAL, WITH TOO MANY, TOO MANY BUTTONS, He would be like...FUCK!! what is is button for?????? ass heated seats?? no fatzilla!!! you are wrong!! that button is for the VOLVO T-POWER TURBO BOOST. you can use it if an street racer wants to smoke your Volvo with his sushibaru at the stop light drag race. just push the turbo boost, to make'em eat dust. push the other button near by to escape from cops and their hateful speeding tickets. I owned a volvo 740 gle 16 valve 1989, and a volvo S70 GLT SE 2000 presently. Both great cars. However the interior in the car in this video would appear to be as nice as some cars over 100k. Just take a look at rear seats with lighting, as well as the front dash. WHY DOES VOLVO DISCONTINUE A GOOD THING?
I have a 1998 S90 U.S. spec. car. Just turned 100K and running strong, and although 12 years of age now is still a head turner and have lost count of how many times people have ask me is it a new model that replaced the S80. I have had many Volvos from a 240DL to a 850 Estate which I still have. Never a let down and remain enjoyable to this day. Have looked at the newer ones, such as the 2011 S60, which I really like, but somehow the magic of the S90 is still there for me. Looking for a Royal.
@Ankkatulppu It lowers the antenna (overrides the automatic control by the head unit) so you can use your radio through the car wash. Mines was lowered most of the time because I mostly played MP3s and USB drives...
just to make it clear for some older comments.. the inline 6 and the inline 5 is the same engine basicly..the inline 5 is a shortend 6.. thats why the gearbox etc fits between them. they both had problem with the blocks but they both got updated.. it's very important to change coolant often..
So happy i still have my White '97 960 Royal. It has 108k, Almost has NEVER given me a problem, But once there was a retard who backed into me, It needed new paint but not a new bumper. It has some of the best quality leather i have ever felt, It still has its Kick-Assness in it. Ive had it since it was on 430 Miles. The interior needs work, But i will NEVER get rid of it. Its the best car i ever have owned, And I now have a S80 so my Volvo 960 and my 850i stays in my garage.
oh my god! I love my volvo to death, but this, this was like futuristic compared to what people drove in the 90's....a printer capability? a cooler? and an electric sun blinder? quite the car
I love the S90 Royal. I have the S90 Limited Edition from new. My car just hit 100,000 miles and still looks like brand new. It has out lived two new cars and is w me for life. I just love the body shape that I can spot a 9 series a mile away. I just wished they would have made it a foot longer in the inside for better room for the back seater would have made the car almost perfect in my eyes. Abram, Austin TX.
Mine's a regular peon model 96 960. A lovely car, with a few quirks. The seat cable was broken, now fixed. The electrical is kind of wacky. It's terribly gutless for such big displacement, and gets horridly low mileage (it's own version of 'no gain, all pain'). Still, I love the car, though. Turns great. Stops well. Seats are comfort defined.
i love this 960 royal, but in my house my family owns a 940 volvo and got to say that volvos are the best in terms of safety and handling in the world.
I grew up with Volvos, but can't remember having seen this commercial beofre. LOVE the car. Looks like a place you'd be happy to be, even now so many years after.
My block was an early 93 porous one and cracked in two, wish I could wring someone's neck @ Volvo for that one. Been Ok since replacing the motor, though; very smooth and luxurious. Actually a driver's car with some supension tweaking....long live Volvo!!
@motorpojken Should be mad at Toyota for displacing the market and cutting costs at the same time. Of all things you shouldn't fail at the gas pedals.... as for Ford and Geely, without their help Volvo would really be defunct by now..
I don´t think that Geely could help Volvo maybe Ford could but not Geely. Beacuse Geely don´t want to build a safety car that is good to the enviroment , they would like to build big cars with a V8 engine, with another words a car like Cadillac Escalade. I still think that the real Volvo died in 1999. (sorry for my bad english im living in Sweden)
@motorpojken You're right. Geely is an AWFUL manufacturer. Just check their crash test videos on YouTube. It's scary that their cars are allowed on the road.
Mine is a '97 960 executive... 160k miles and still going strong,it's pretty bulletproof for the last 70k miles of ownership. It's the real Volvo quality.
@hadabenz agree......... but somehow I'm loving the new XC60 interiors....and even with the S40 and C30, you get a better car than what could be made 10 years ago..
@petershen1984 Well, scandinavian design never looses its flair.. so youre right in that respect. But to smell and feel the essence of a volvo, you should first own some of the old bank-vaults like the 240GL, 740GLE, 960GL, S90, or even S70... and then you're allowed to buy the new ones.. don't worry, scandinavians retain their tradition very well... cheers :)
@marauderquebec First, learn how to spell.Second Volvo is in no way related to a crappy Lincon.Third Volvo's V6 is as powerful as the heavy, gas wasting, crap of a V8 that Lincon uses. Plus there is the fact that this is way safer, better built, more refined, and is better looking. Lincon didn't have this stuff in 1998.
@marauderquebec 4.6L instead of 3.0L. V8 instead of V6. 210 bhp instead of 204... Wait what? Who in their right mind would produce a larger less efficient engine than a supposed competitor?
I have the S90 Executive with 4 seats and centre console air-con like the one in the vid.... it really is one hell of a car, with 200,000 miles on the clock it still runs with no creaking and banging and a smooth as the day it was made...
the difference between the Royal and Exec is that the Royal has 'Hermes' Leather interior....
I'll have to do a video of it and post it on here

i have an 850R great fucking car. the 960 not to sure about my family used to have one they handle like shit and are slow. and all the interior trim comes lose
yeah but a civic is full of cheaply removable parts meaning its regularly unsafe, the volvo s90 (like other volvos) is a tank that requires a lot of precision to keep running smoothly and after 11 years mine still does without having any replacement parts. Civics are nice and all, but they arent safe and are much lighter, therefore less likely to break down even though they sometimes do. Volvos dont even with the extra wieght and strength.
its almost same with 97 960 dat i have, its very comfy car and very reasonable price but exterior could have been more stylish cause there is almost no aftermarket upgrades in usa.but for this price I love it..960 4eva.rear wheel drive helps a lot at the corners
the styling is nice in its own way but it looks too similiar to the older 740/760. I like the look of current volvos, though once again the new S80 is barely distinguishable to the old one, what's the point of releasing a new model if you're not going to show everyone how new it is?
haha, sorry, I meant the 240 basically stayed the same for the 19 years, with changes to the headlights and choice of engines that's about it...
With any new car comes the risk of acceptance... like the controversial 7-series BMW design. And yet, yesterday I saw the nextgen 7-series is hard to get used to. I mean, the oversized radiator grille that extends into the bumper.....
BMW are out of my good books as far as design is concerned, I don't know what the blokes in Bavaria are up to, but the new 7-series is a massive let down, especially after I saw some sketches a few months ago of a much more radical design. I agree there is a problem with acceptance, I liked how Mercedes pulled it off, after shocking people with the twin lights on the E-class, they adapted it for the next model whilst improving the design; Mercedes have overtaken BMW in design now.
Hehe. I raced my 960 up mountains (although the gearbox is notoriously terrible for it!) and, compared immediately to a VW Polo, one was able to tell the difference being pulled upwards (FWD) versus being pushed from behind (RWD). Great car!
1997? I was wrong. I thought it looked a bit earlier than that. Interesting video. Would anyone know the classical style music playing in the background that starts at 1:00? Reminds me of the sims.
to bad volvo has gone away with the making of true comfortable cars, and cars that last forever. After ford took over, no new ones have had the quality and reputation of reliability of the old s70's 90's and tri-number cars.
you misunderstood, the tri-number and s70 and s90 are still awesome, but the current lineup, except say, the XC90 are no where as durable and nice as the older ones. And they most likely won't live up to the seemingly endless lifespan of the older ones.
The inline 6 seen in the S90 and turbocharged versions seen in the XC90 are all garbage. I thought that Volvo would have made some updates to the engine from the start, but apparantly not. I have done engine in 960s because of porus blocks, and head gaskets in XC90s (with the I6) because they are leaking right off of the factory floor.
The XC90 with a 5 cylinder or a V8, I can guarantee, will last longer than an S90.
Not too much. The high performance company EVOLVE has had issues with the cylinders actually cracking at only 370HP on their R cars. Which is why I chose the 2.3 liter I5 for my high boost engine. The 2.5T seen in the R is being pushed to the limit at just 300HP.
Gotta love it i have the last generation s70 GLT SE! Only weird thing about is that it tat you couldn't get the glt in a manual . . . auto only but i still love my car
Great piece of history for the Volvo enthusiast--alas, the rear drive models are all but a memory now. Also so very nice to see a clip of the Twin Towers in the N.Y. scenes--RIP
i enjoyed that video thank you for posting it, i have up of my volvo 760 Executive, 6 doord personel carrier, it used to be the same colour as the s90 featured here, howeaver it has resprayed black for use in the funeral industry. and i can do that turn, the 760 will but you'd need awider road :)
I wish they'd offered the Royal in the US. I have a friend or two who really want one badly

Sometimes when i see a Mercedes or Audi...I'm just thinking what whoud happen if Volvo wudent be there all the time...no safe cars?
Volvo chanced it all...almost the whole car industry and still do. Mercedes and the other cars just fallow. (Like Dr. Dre's "The Chronic")
And you can't hate it...you really can't, Volvo IS and WILL forever be the best car.
That's all i have to say...this time.

I agree there is a problem with acceptance, I liked how Mercedes pulled it off, after shocking people with the twin lights on the E-class, they adapted it for the next model whilst improving the design; Mercedes have overtaken BMW in design now.

makes me sad to be letting go of my own s90...fortunately my brother has decided to adopt her and keep her in the family! :)

Hehe. I raced my 960 up mountains (although the gearbox is notoriously terrible for it!) and, compared immediately to a VW Polo, one was able to tell the difference being pulled upwards (FWD) versus being pushed from behind (RWD). Great car!

Awesome car!
I hope to buy a Volvo 960 or S90 when I'm finished with my study :)

1997? I was wrong. I thought it looked a bit earlier than that. Interesting video. Would anyone know the classical style music playing in the background that starts at 1:00? Reminds me of the sims.

Hehe. I'm a 964 owner myself..... Very comfortable.
petershen1984 4 years ago
to bad volvo has gone away with the making of true comfortable cars, and cars that last forever. After ford took over, no new ones have had the quality and reputation of reliability of the old s70's 90's and tri-number cars.
S70T5 5 years ago
yea right the 850 pwned and stil pwns.... all kinds of pwanage
MattJones1418 5 years ago
you misunderstood, the tri-number and s70 and s90 are still awesome, but the current lineup, except say, the XC90 are no where as durable and nice as the older ones. And they most likely won't live up to the seemingly endless lifespan of the older ones.
S70T5 5 years ago
Maybe, but an s60r pwns oh man so much pwnage.

KLowD9x 4 years ago
Well, unfortunately it seems the inline-6 is less refined than the inline-5 -- the latter is further improved for lots of turbocharging....
petershen1984 4 years ago
Not too much. The high performance company EVOLVE has had issues with the cylinders actually cracking at only 370HP on their R cars. Which is why I chose the 2.3 liter I5 for my high boost engine. The 2.5T seen in the R is being pushed to the limit at just 300HP.

Gotta love it i have the last generation s70 GLT SE! Only weird thing about is that it tat you couldn't get the glt in a manual . . . auto only but i still love my car

Great piece of history for the Volvo enthusiast--alas, the rear drive models are all but a memory now. Also so very nice to see a clip of the Twin Towers in the N.Y. scenes--RIP

I personally would like to learn the brake U-turn maneuver at 1m 00s... ;-)
petershen1984 5 years ago
There's a name for that turn- it's called the bootleg turn.
petershen1984 5 years ago

No, it's called a handbrake turn. Pretty simple to do with a bit of practise and a quiet road (lol)
