I wonder...with the exception of Patti LuPone, did the cast actually know how to play the instruments, or were some miming?

No miming. All cast members and standbys played their own instruments.
And actually, Patti was probably the least adept at the instrument playing. She only spewed out the same two notes over and over again on her tuba, and she rang the triangle a couple times. It was nothing exceptional.

I guess the actor playing Toby is a violinist after all-I just wasn't sure if his violin-playing was real, considering that I am a violinist myself.
