Remember, if you attack a city, be sure to attack it with a unit that has the Blitz upgrade or with two or more units. Otherwise, the city will rush units to put up a defense and deplete its gold supply for you to capture. A mass attack all at once yields the best results, if you have units that can bust through the defenses.

exactly - or just mass produce about 10 tank army units, bring them all to the other civilisations border and just select each one after the last one has destroyed their opposing unit until you just take the city all in one turn
