fights in Pride were so much classier and organized than the ones that are being held in the UFC. I do enjoy the UFC and been a fan since 1995 but when it comes down to professionalism, respect and honor among the fighters...Pride will never be equalled
IT's amazing how even the crowd is silent in awe of the fighters in front of them. So different from the UFC crowds. Once gain...UFC might be owned by ZUFFA / UFC but they will never have the reputation, class and honor PRIDE had in all of it's events. Even fighters had different mentality. They appreciated each other and not like UFC were they talk trash about each other in a disrespectufl way
well look at where pride is japan. the crowd doesn't yell because the fighters are the ones that know how to fight so just shut up and let them do their job for they know what they are doing. and the japanese a very respectful unlike americans hence the trash talk it's so stupid! one of the greatest martial artists said "never predict the outcome of a fight, it will be your downfall"
It's not incredibly difficult to adapt Judo to a non gi wearing individual. Did you study Olympic Judo without striking and little ground techniques? That is not what I am talking about.
Fedor Emelianko, Karo Pariysian, Yoshiro Akiyama, and Kazuhiro Nakamura all excell in Judo and it's application to MMA. None refuse to strike, although boxing to me was my first love so it would be an asset to me.
The kicks to the kidneys suck for the guy getting hit but they won't ever end a fight. That's not very bjj, anyway, is it?
Who did Ralek fight? I did a quick search on youtube and saw him fight a guy who looked lost on the ground. I saw him on HD NET and well and it looked like another cream puff. GJJ is awesome but is very, very beatable....especially against a cat with good jj skills PLUS good striking and takedowns, etc.
BTW, I respect your comments. It's just my observations :)
BTW, if they didn't have gloves or stand-ups I think there would be plenty of Gracies laying in the guard taking short choppy punches for days on end (like Ken vs Royce). And didn't Royce fight Sakuraba "until someone quits" and Royce quit? That's because like a lot of fighters these days people know how to defend submissions in mma.
I think Royce and the family where/are awesome bjj guys but once everyone figured out how to counter them they lost their power. BJJ is still the single best street seld defense (assuming you would rather run in a fight, and are knocked down and must fight from there), but in mma there are some great fighters who can defend takedowns (like Chuck Liddel or BJ Penn) and defend submissions (back in '93 no one outside of Royce even knew what a triangle choke was), etc. BJJ alone isn't enough.
He is a MT guy who allied himself with the LL guys and represented them in the ring. His is the person who brought MT into LL. That was the missing piece.
Pat's focus on Wrestling and Marco's on MT is just par for the course in MMA. Nobody ever said what the exact proportions had to be. Some folks are more oriented towards one sport, and some to others.
It certainly was lucky for him, but it unfair to assume that there was not basis, theory or strategy behind his formula. For that you'd have to interview him and ask. I think there is definitely a pattern to Marco's preference for combat sports (like MT) and competitive martial arts (like BJJ).
See I really don't agree that Marco was a plain old vanilla Luta Livrador. They certainly had the wrestling and no-Gi aspect, but Marco was (IMO) the guy that integrated Muaythai into that mix, creating what is in effect the standard winning formula of modern MMA.
If you want a good example of the common LL mix of styles, watch Hugo and compare to Marco.
It is the exact mix codified for example in the type of coaches provided on TUF. There are assistant coaches for boxing, Muaythai, BJJ, and wrestling. There are no Shotokan, Judo, Kyokushinkai or San Shou coaches. Get it?
I know all about Mu Tao Pankration. BL and GJJ are irrelevant because I am saying Marco invented the exact "mix" that constitutes the modern approach to MMA, not the idea of mixing itself.
Mu Tao and Lee's JKD are completely untested in MMA, NHB or Vale Tudo. Not even worth mentioning here.
Muuito boa luta,eh uma pena mesmo naum terem lutado mais tempo em pé,pois ai naum ia ter pro adversário pois o chute de ruas eh foda d+++,parabéns Ruas.

This was a great fight. So much is lost when the ufc doesn't allow a fight to become so technical.

well Fedor does Sambo, and judo is complete applicable to MMA since the gracies in general do Judo
(jiu jitsu).
689433 2 years ago
Fedor does sambo and judo primarily. He is a master of sports in both. He favors neither and utilizes both approximately equally.
CatholicConversion 2 years ago
Sambo is based on Judo...the same applaies for BJJ.
689433 2 years ago
I always preferred traditional Judo over BJJ.

And how many people in the world have (a) Marco's BJJ skills and (b) his physical ability? Answer: Very, very few, if any.
