A minor correction: the Tlaltelolco student massacre in 1968 wasn't done by the "christero" government. The christeros were revolutionaries who protested for freedom of religion in the '20s. The student massacre of '68 was done by the government, alright, but it had nothing to do with the christeros.
Exactly Christeros was a religious movement but they fought by 1) The Pope instruction when the church consider the mexican constitution a rule against the catoliscism behaviour, because the constitution declares the people with freeddom of religion believe.
and 2) Presidente Elias Calles establish a public school where the sexual education was incorporated on classroom.
When the public teachers went to towns they were killed or raped with the ears cut by the christeros because they beleive the catholic church must be the only religion and government. This inititate the christero war.
