I saw a young raccoon in the daylight. it was outside my work but it didnt have rabies, he was just lost. Not all raccoons and skunks that are up during the day have rabies, some just get lost and cant figure out the way home!
@Kallie500 , the first sign of rabies is wandering, which, means they act lost. And the reason when you see nocturnal animals out in the day they are probably in the early stages of rabies. They wont be foaming at the mouth, they wont be attacking everything in sight, they will be.......lost......
If a rabid animal is not stopped it is a threat to wildlife as well as humans. When in doubt it is best to put it down quickly and humanely. I say this as an animal lover. Rabies is a horror.
I adore skunks. They are social, intellegent, curious, beautiful animals and I would love to have one or two for pets.
Unfortunately, the skunk in this video is almost certainly rabid. Aside from being miserable, which it almost certainly was, it is a danger to humans, farm stock, and its fellow wildlife.
@Maghiere There's a big difference between domesticated skunks and wild skunks, just like there is between domesticated rats and their free-range sewer-dwelling relatives.
The skunk had rabies more than likely, but even if it didn't I still would of shot that stinky bastard before everything smelled like skunk.. I had a dog get sprayed once, and it immediately jumped in my buddy's Jeep.. It smelt like a doobie in there for a year : ) Oh yea, the bunny huggers can piss off any time now..
it couldve had rabies but it also cud have been caught off guard and relly aggresive since u were skating around...i wud think an animal with rabies doesnt stop its rampage and keeps chasing u but idk dont take my word for it
One night we were skating in the dark, and we were chased by a skunk who just came out of nowhere. It sprayed aggressively and then took off. Do you think it may have had rabies?
Skunks are one of the primary vectors for rabies in the USA. Any skunk out in the daytime and behaving in an unusual manner should be assumed to have rabies. This virus is alive and well in N America. Better to assume it is rabid and humanely dispatch it than to have it running loose and chancing it biting another animal or child. It may seem cruel, but really will save other animals in the long run.
don't forget about foxes. There has been about 50 attacks in the past 5 months in my county. half of them were rabid foxes. this sucks, cause it's going to mess up hunting season.
I think Cowgirl has probaly seen enought skunks/other animals who have had it to know when they have rabies!!
Saying an innocent animal was shot when it didn't need to be then what about hunting/shooting? is that bad as there innocenr animals? A shunk with rabies as much as you might say its an 'innocent' animal its better for people/other animals if its shot then live in my mind!!!
We had one in our barn that our dog pulled out of the hay when right next to it. It was stumbling around and couldnt even spray without tipping over first. It was trying to eat ice but was all chokey. We had to shoot that yucky thing.
We can't give it a break now, your too late with your oh so knowledgeable information about skunks.. You must start a 'save the skunks from rednecks' campaign....
When I used to live in California, any time you saw a skunk in daylight you were to call Animal Control, as it was almost a certainty that it had rabies. Any wild animal acting unusual in any way was to be reported as well. I'd rather hear of an innocent wild animal getting shot and killed than a child getting bit and having to get treatments (those injections hurt like a son-of-a-gun I'm told, even if they are given in the muscles and not in the abdomen, as they used to be).
Our whole family had to take the shots due to a rabid skunk getting in a pen with a blind dog and a bottle calf, both of which got rabies from a skunk... The shots didnt really hurt bad, they were just huge and a lot of them and what hurt most was our pocketbook, they are very expensive
Not this skunk, but a different one...We all fed the calf and they slobber a lot. I researched and found that any skunk out in the day, is most likely rabid.
If a skunk (a nocturnal animal) is active during daytime it is a good bet it's rabid. Rabies in its late stages makes the animal incapable of sleeping. If you see a racoon or bat as well, active in daytime be aware.
ditto alllucky, the skunk was rabid....it came out and chased our dogs....Luckily as everyone should, have their dogs vaccinated, as ours were..Any wild animal that comes to our house and fights our dogs or cat, will be shot on sight. Normal healthy wild animals dont do this.

Possibly

You might have startled the skunk, or it may have had young nearby; usually rabid animals will try to bite you.

Give this skunk a break-- so it's outside in the daytime-- that does NOT mean it has rabies!! Let's learn to co-exist peacefuly with these animals
