I hear a loud clunk in the back of my car whenever I start it up and put it into reverse, also when I'm switching from reverse into drive. After my car get's into second gear there is a slighter clunk, and afterwards it switches gears fine. I thought I had a bad u-joint so I lubricated them all and twisted the driveshaft, the u-joints are good. I had a mechanic conform that. He looked at my vehicle and noticed the tranny mount is bad. He said that may be the cause, what do you think?
@darkertree just follow my advice here by jacking it up and pulling on the shaft. If the shaft joints are solid, then the tranny or rear end causes clunks
I went over a speed bump in my peugeot 306 and it sheered off the studs that hold in the engine mount, I kept hearing a clunking sound when I was driving and my exhaust was blowing. Got an engine mount , I think that my off side draft shaft is damage as well
hey scotty my 88 chey 1500 has a real load noice comming from the back .when i go over 30 mp an when i let off the gas the noice gose away what do you think it is
Hey scotty, my truck is doing the same thing but I cant hear it because my truck is so loud. I checked the drive shaft and it moves. Is this always the problem or could it be something else. how expensive is U joints?
Do you not have to mark the where the driveshaft goes into transmission or the rear end. I did one of these with my dad on a tractor trailer and I remember him saying to. Does that matter?
hey scotty I have a 2000 chevy tahoe z71,and when i put it in drive or reverse ect... it makes a cluncking noise and jerks at fast acceration or at a traffie signal when i push the gas and go i hear a bump bump noise are these syomptoms of bad u joints. thanks
@harvmann1000 yes, but those things have a design flaw on the shafts where the yoke going into the transmission clunks. There is a special grease for that which GM sells and advises you to grease it every 10 thousand miles or so to stop clunking. Scotty
Hi, I have limited mechanic skills, but I thought the yoke should be protected against nicks and heavy scratches, so as to keep the transmission oil seal from leaking. No such care was taken here. So I guess it really doesn't matter.
@Matthew55904 Same thing for real wheel drive cars, for front wheel drive cars you replace the CV shafts as a unit, it's more economical as they make em in china now cheaper than the repair parts. Scotty

hey scotty my grand cherokee vibrates doing 40 to 60 mph... does mean its the u joints ? i just replace transfer case and the front drive shaft has some play.....thank you so much,... scotty....
@adriangt83 tons of things can cause vibration, you have to check em all, from worn tires, bent rims, front end alignment, u joints, and tranny mounts. Scotty
@Dirty19Dan I don't personally know, I try never to swap stuff. BUT, call a chevy dealer and get the part numbers for both shafts, and if the number is the same, of course it would work. Scotty

In the case of a automatic If your getting clunking sounds wile driveing around, or if you get clunk sound when switching from park to drive/reverse. it can be a number of causes, majority of the time its not related to the U-joint. It can be a miscalibrated TPS or TV cable, or caused by transmission ware, some cases idle speed/engine timing/fuel mixture can also cause it, due to miscalibrations forceing the shiftpoints to be to firm or soft.
Ok, quickly fixing a drive shaft...ok...I have a rover 214sei, it made a large clunk and wouldn't drive while I backed up my drive. I need it tomorrow morning. and i need have nothing but a jack and a few tools...
I just went under my F-150 and could turn my front drive shaft almost 180 degrees both ways, does this mean I need new a new front drive shaft or a U-joint? Thanks.
also when i push my gas pedal down sometimes it does not want to go and sometimes it goes just fine please help me also i took your advice on the idle problem and it fixed it thankyou your very helpful
@dupont4sure Slight hesitation can be many things, from worn spark plugs to weak fuel injectors or fuel pump. so start with basics, and put new spark plugs and wires in. "Then hope it's not in the fuel system, though a little injector cleaner often can help clean out problems. Scotty
hi scotty its dupont4sure again my mustang 4 banger i had the tranny rebuilt now my car vibrates after i come off the highway i get a bad vibration could this be a drive shaft problem if i shift it to neutral then back to drive it works just fine i need help thankyou
EY scotty at 0:50 ,, i have my trueno from 1986 and i did the same you did at 0:50 with U joint and i thought that play was normal,,so if i have this play i have to replace the u joint but just 1 question ,what the normal play?just a little bit or have to be hard to turn?cause my shaft have the same play as the video
@serchmarc Normal play is a little back and forth from internal tranny and rear end wear. If you have more play and you can see the joints move back and forth, they need replacing Scotty
I had a '99 Trans Am and had vibration. It didn't have clips, it had adhesive that held the joints in. The parts store told me I needed to heat it and melt that glue. The new ones come with clips. How common is it that the factory joints use glue rather than clips?
I decided not to replace them myself. I took it to a driveshaft shop to have the joints replaced. He also straightened and balanced the shaft. I was running my car on the drag strip most weekends. It seemed cost effective.
Hey Scotty, one of my friends has got a Diahatsu Charade that makes a horrible whine in 5th gear and it's a little noticible in 4th gear too. Any idea what it may be?
@uzaiyaro Yea, the transmission is wearing out. Those little Dias are pretty much disposable cars, as they age and fall apart, you throw them away. I'd drive it till it drops, then get a toyota. Scotty Kilmer

@Matthew55904 Bigger wheels would be easier, but realize it would change your cornering and rideability also. Your car was made for the way it is now and will not drive the same no matter what you change, wheels or shocks or springs. Scotty
@Matthew55904 Don't go into here driveway, your car was made low, period. Changing anything other than making a custom made bumper with more clearance would change the driveability like I said. If you want high, get a pick up truck. Scotty
@scottykilmer i know custom rims will take more gas when u install them but u say drivability people mod their cars all the time so how does it effect this?
@Matthew55904 Well, people do stupid things all the time on this planet, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. The car was designed for one size wheel and suspensions system, you mess with this, and then the geometry of the car changes, often always for the worse. Simple math there. scotty Kilmer
@dnl5649 wat the hell r u doin driving a ford that fast anyways they are unreliable as it is the faster u go the more unsafe u are not just ford but ANY car going 90
@Matthew55904 i like to drive fast on the free way when no one is around. why do you say fords are unreliable, any car can be unreliable. its just that older fords have more problems, especially after its been sitting for 10 years like mine.
but my car has outlived any other car i have ever had. it has 475,600 and some change miles on her, original motor and tranny. neither one have ever been rebuilt and she's still running strong
@dnl5649 I call BS. I highly doubt the motor and trans are still going after that many miles, sitting that long, and you driving it fast like that. I know older vehicles were built well and many are still on the road, but I seriously doubt your car runs as well as you say, with how you drive, and it's condition. Just my opinion, but I call shenanigans on it.
@capnsparx no its all original, i have all of the service records. it was kept in a garage. the tranny fluid was changed every 10,000 miles, the oil was changed every 10k. if you doubt it runs good, check out my video of it running. the engine does have a bit of blow by but otherwise its in perfect shape. it has had quite a few repairs but no overhauls what so ever.
@capnsparx it was my grandfathers car, he drove it pretty slow. he gave it to me and i have had it for 2 years now. i dont usually drive it fast. right now i am overhauling the engine. the rings were so work and there was so much blow by. the oil smelt like gas from the blow by. but otherwise it still ran pretty strong! when i last drove the car i told the car this may be your last ride and topped it on the interstate to almost 120 mph, it didnt like that
@dnl5649 Mind you, I know they run forever if treated right, but not if it sat for 10 years (or more), and fast speeds. I'm not saying it's not the orgional, I'm saying bs on your 'never rebuilt' part. again, just my opinion.
@capnsparx it sat for 10 years as in it wasnt street legal, it did sit and wasnt started at all for 2 years but in the other 8 it was maintained just like it usually was.
@jbaumhauer Ah, someone finally noticed. I like putting in little nuances to see if anyone will figure them out. You win the first prize. Scotty Kilmer
@ponchoyo Well, do like I did in the video and you might use two jackstands on the rear end. then run it fast and see if the shaft is a wobbling like mad. Scotty Kilmer
@ponchoyo Yes, but not just spin them, drive them with the engine going at least 50 or 60, Just make sure you have GOOD strong jack stands. Scotty Kilmer
@mike797 You can, but a drive shaft is normally ballanced when it's built. So it should be in ballance all the way round, not mattering which way you bolt it up. And some drive shafts will only go in one way because of special splines going into the transmission and you can only put it back that one way. Scotty Kilmer
Damn! Scotty You made that look easy..I have 2 questions 1 is not related to the video....here goes! what is the name of the tool you used and where can I get one. And my 2nd question is the subject is the throttle body Why do people install throttle body spacers? what is the purpose of a throttle body spacer?? Thank You Scotty...Fred Rassmann( Atlantic City,N.J.08406 )
@MORPHEUSou812 A spacer just increases the length of the intake run a little, it doesn't really do much. as for the tool, just google "U Joint Installation Tool" and you'll find tons to buy. scotty kilmer
@Charles2337 I make my videos as I fix the vehicles I'm working on. I have no control over what breaks and comes here to be fixed. So, if I get GM and Fords in to fix, I can make videos on them. scotty kilmer
You dont need that special tool, can just use an impact socket and put the shaft in a vise. Also its a good idea to use a brass hammer if you can. Good video!
@living4fire Yes, you can make things work with sockets and stuff, but you won't whack your fingers off using the tool I have. I like my fingers non broken. Scotty Kilmer
@ding0925 Sure, I have all kinds of other tools too, but I don't use them in videos much because I assume the average joe isn't going to have such an inventory of tools to use themselves. scotty Kilmer

You may mention that grease is needed on the new u joint.
martycj8 1 year ago
@martycj8 The u joint I used was already pregreased, but yes, cheaper joints need to be greased after they are installed. Scotty Kilmer

do drive shafts go out of balance? i have a datsun z, and have a bunch of shifting issues, don't know what's wrong but replacing stuff is due!
ponchoyo 1 year ago
@ponchoyo Well, do like I did in the video and you might use two jackstands on the rear end. then run it fast and see if the shaft is a wobbling like mad. Scotty Kilmer
scottykilmer 1 year ago
@scottykilmer , so get the rear wheels up and clear and spin them?
ponchoyo 1 year ago
@ponchoyo Yes, but not just spin them, drive them with the engine going at least 50 or 60, Just make sure you have GOOD strong jack stands. Scotty Kilmer

one this i was always taught was to mark the driveshaft before removing it so you can line it back up just for better balance.
mike797 1 year ago 4

MORPHEUSou812 1 year ago
@MORPHEUSou812 A spacer just increases the length of the intake run a little, it doesn't really do much. as for the tool, just google "U Joint Installation Tool" and you'll find tons to buy. scotty kilmer

lol You have a lot of videos on Toyotas. Can you make some on GM and Ford cars?
Charles2337 1 year ago
@Charles2337 I make my videos as I fix the vehicles I'm working on. I have no control over what breaks and comes here to be fixed. So, if I get GM and Fords in to fix, I can make videos on them. scotty kilmer

@scottykilmer
I see,
lol now I'm definitely not gonna get a Toyota haha =P

good video
1elAguila 1 year ago
You dont need that special tool, can just use an impact socket and put the shaft in a vise. Also its a good idea to use a brass hammer if you can. Good video!
living4fire 1 year ago
@living4fire Yes, you can make things work with sockets and stuff, but you won't whack your fingers off using the tool I have. I like my fingers non broken. Scotty Kilmer

Scotty.. I use my balljoint press for most of them...
ding0925 1 year ago
@ding0925 Sure, I have all kinds of other tools too, but I don't use them in videos much because I assume the average joe isn't going to have such an inventory of tools to use themselves. scotty Kilmer
