She was QUEEN of the race track......the problem was her pedigree ..she came from a line of soft bones..both her sire and damn both broke leg bones..and that match race dident help her fate obviously....greatest filly to ever run..will never be another 1 like her.....
@wwegirl619 No, She fractured her leg because she rammed the starting gate. It gave way from the speed and pressure on her leg. It shows it in the movie and real clip. Why else would they add padding in the gates? They didnt have it back then. Maybe her parents did brake their legs, but it isnt the cause of her death.
@0Twintig She did strike her shoulder on the starting gate as she left the stall, in the match race with FP. This didn't cause the BREAK, but it unbalanced her and made her inadvertently place too much weigh on her other leg to regain her balance. This did contribute to the breakdown but was not the direct cause.

Don't be so sure you'd have wanted to see her last race. I watched it live on TV when I was 11. 34 years later, for whatever reason(s), I'm still not over it. Not even close.
Ruffian is the best. There are so many good horse in the world of horse racing, but none of them can be like Ruffian... She is the greatest. She show the whole world that the girls can do. She is the most beautiful horse in the world, she is my dreamhorse. Tall, black, fast, unbeaten... I can't say in words that I feel with this pretty girl. She is a champion. Nobody can be like Ruffian before and after... She lives forever.
Ruffian only was foaled there but was owned by Stuart Janney of Loacast Hill Farm and trained by Frank Whitely Jr. She actually spent her off track training at a stables in Camden, SC. I will never forget that awful race and the horror of seeing her break down. I cried for weeks after her death. She was definitely one of the greatest to ever live.
The main problem with this race was that it was a match race and not a regular race. Horses will try harder when it's 1 on 1 and that is what she did. Her fighting spirit that drove her to win was what killed her. This race was the last match race ever run because of the risks to the horses. Someday I hope to visit her grave at Belmont Park. She was right up there with Man o War and Secretariat.
@breyerhorsegirl37 You misunderstood what I was saying. It was that fighting spirit that drove her to be the best that ultimately caused her to fight the cast that they put on her leg. When she woke up after the surgery to repair her leg, she starting fighting the cast. When the cast broke loose and she started bleeding profusely , the Janney's had her put to sleep. It was awful and I remember it like yesterday.
and im saying too that not as much happens in barrels
what do you mean 2&3 year old if i get what your saying your talking about the horses and we train the horses and we make sure the horse has no HEAT in the legs before we barrel race
i dont want to get into this anymore im just stating some thing that what happened to 8 bells im saying what i feel that i think it was the riders fault they felt her leg and knew she had heat but...still raced her
Cameras....hard to admit tho it is, you have a valid point. It is said that what made Ruffian great (her tenacity and will to RUNNNNNN), is what cost her her life when she woke from the anesthesia. All around, hers is prolly the saddest tale I know of in horse racing. I honour her memory and always will, and celebrate her life and spirit. Thanks for all here who join me in doing so!!
um no im not barrel raceing yeah that does nothing to them btw they knew ruffin had heat in her leg they felt her leg and KNEW she had heat but..they still raced her
What about barrel futurities limited to 2 & 3 year olds? Don't tell me that does "nothing" to them. I've seen as many barrel horses break down as I have race horses.
I'm not trying to argue to say that they should have raced her. I'm just sayin' that crap happens in every sport.
@deana545 no no no you got it wrong! if you watch the movie and the actual race, the hits the side of the starting gate, the movie does a close up on that part, when she hit it it fractured her leg and it gave way and snaped!
@SeeYaOnSondee Use your brains, if she'd snapped her leg when she jumped from the gate how could she have run for the first half mile? She'd have gone down in the first fifty yards! What you saw in the movie was her striking the gate. The break actually happened after the first half mile. It is true that Velazquez could not pull her up for about 100-200 yards because she fought to keep running, but she did NOT run from the beginning of the race with a fractured ankle.
I love ruffian sooo much one of my fav horses of all time and no doubt the greatest filly to EVER live...the song is one of my favs too, so an all-around GREAT tribute- Well Done!!!
What happened to Ruffian is a sad part of the sport. But right or wrong, racing will go on. Take a closer look: When Ruffian broke her leg, her jockey tried to stop her immediately- SHE FOUGHT TO KEEP RUNNING! That is what made her great.
Whether you agree with the sport of horse racing or not, there are a few facts to consider: 1.These horses are better cared for than most household pets. 2. Accidents happen. They aren't happening more often, people are just starting to take more notice now that PETA has gotten involved. 3. These horses run cause they WANT to. A 1200 lb animal is not going to run just because a little guy is sitting on his back with a tiny piece of leather. He might as well be a fly on the horse's back!
Well said! I visited Keeneland a few weeks ago, and those horses have the life!! Anyone who screams abuse is out of their freakin' mind. And for people who "hate" horse racing...do you also hate Eventing? Have you not noticed that we lost many GREAT horses to that sport? You can't pick and choose. If you're against racing, then you should be against any sport that involves horses.
@CamerasAreAwesome i think racing is great but they should wait to race them until they are 4 so they can grow more and be faster because they would be stronger
@CamerasAreAwesome You're wrong. They ARE breaking down more often, and it's because of inbreeding or linebreeding to Native Dancer. All of the major breakdowns over the past 35 or so years have been in the same family. NONE have been unrelated to Native Dancer.
@englishhorndude No, you are wrong. The problem has NOTHING to do with Native Dancer. He had hoof issues, not bone. And of course Native Dancer is going to be related to the horses that breakdown...he is an ancestor to most of the thoroughbreds alive today!!
@Ruffian4Ever Of course he's in the pedigrees of most thoroughbreds alive today. That's what inbreeding does. Three quarters of the breeds world-wide is inbred to him. It's destroyed the breed.
JUST AN OPINION but I began to hate horse racing when all of the horse's began to break their legs and pass away. I think it is retarded to see how fast your poor little horse can go and push then and push untill their bones can't take it anymore. And the worst part is, most people are in it for the money. The horse's want to run, and they want to please, but the owners go to far......racing sucks!!!!!
yeah it is sad. my uncle used to own this huge racing farm, and even he said that if the horse didn't make money; they'd do what u would to an employee; fire em. or sell them to slaughter or just abuse and use them to reproduce
i think the age a horse is allowed to race is like 4. since it takes awhile for a horses knees to fill in. that why sometimes you get these break downs
@RememberRuffian no she does jumping and shes not against that!. she doesnt like that they race horses when they are that young at it gives them back and oof problems when they are older from riding them at a young age!
@KelseyRoxProductions Im sorry, kay? but most horses LOVE to race, would you deny them that? racehorses are much loved, and they are not only in it for the money.
i hate the people who raced ruffian its so said we should stop careing about whos horse is faster then that person we should stop racing 2 year old who really cares if they have the most spunk i whant so much to go on a strike for racing filly i mean 8 year old mares are just as good am i right right and that person who said "people like YOU are the probblem" no i dont think so poor horses are out there dieing beacuse stupied ass holes dont care about if the horse is safe enough to race ugh
Nicko I disagree.......many were at fault. The folks who thought it a great idea for the equine version of male vs. female in the mid 70's climate. I recall this clearly as a child. The genetics and inbreeding of Ruffian's line and the documented leg problems on both sides of her family....her perfect composition came at a high price to her indeed. No way can 1000+ lbs. of muscle and sinew run run run while supported by fragile legs the relative size of champagne glass stems, without disaster.
Thank you for mentioning the problem with inbreeding. The whole industry seems to be in denial about it being the largest part of the source of the breakdown problems.
not only that but if you look in their pedigree some horses have the same horse 2 or 3 times in a 5 generation pedigree. and sometimes there are three or four horses who appear 2 or three times. Its ridiculous. and breeders now breed horsesmostly, or only, for speed rather than strength and durability which, in my opinion, leads to weaker bones and a greater chance of deformation or health problems.
I guess I've never noticed it before but I can see it now. maybe he had some sort of weird gene, kinda like Impressive had the HYPP gene. maybe native dancer's is just something to d with bone structure. Good point. I'd like to look into that more.
Tbezz I see your point. I also bemoan the "jinx" placed on Foolish Pleasure after Ruffian's demise. He did nothing but do what was asked of him, ie. run his heart out, and his legacy is forever soiled by those not in the know saying he "beat Ruffian". Nobody won, what a tragedy!!!
I luv Horse Racing I want to be a Jockey. Please understand all they think about on the race track is "RUN RUN RUN" "WIN WIN WIN". People spend "BILLIONS" on horses and there safty. Try to understand from a Jockeys point of view. thank you, from, KelsieRides
I'd urge the creator to be VERY careful of bashing me.
If I'm insulted again by this person, I'm immediately going on a crusade to have legal charges begin against him by the owner of R Kelly's copyrights. BANK ON IT!!!
Ruffian was a magnificent animal. This is a great video. But you're grossly dishonoring her memory by defending unconscionable breeding practices.
Some humility and respect for the opinions of others would be HIGHLY in order.
If this was used without permission and I'm insulted and disrespected again, I'll get charges brought by the owners of R Kelly's copyrights. If used with permission, I'll get your permission revoked.
It's time the racing industry faced some realities it's been running from for decades.
There are far too many problems about which the breeding / racing industries are in total denial.
They've line-bred / inbred horses to Native Dancer for the past 50-60 years. His descendants have produced large numbers of broken-down animals. They saw bad results... and just kept going.
The decades-long story they've been keeping from us started that day: July 6th, 1975. Denial it only insults Ruffian's memory, and that of any number of other helpless, glorious equines.
She loved running soo much and wanted to beat foolish pleasure that she was running when she came out of surgery, I say she is better, if not the same as, Secretariat! It's too bad that this had to happen to such a GORGEOUS animal!
Her hairline fracture was in her right HIND leg the year previous.
She was suppose to be on the right lead at that point in the race. Horses race on the right lead in the straightaways and on their left lead in the turns.
But I do believe it was hitting the gate, and that she either became sore on her left front and was putting more weight on her right, or that she injured her right front and it gave way. Either way I am pretty sure it was the gate...even Frank Whitely thought so.
It still shows how being related to Native Dancer could be bad.
We didn't really know it yet, but the world was headed for some serious inbreeding to Native Dancer. Had Ruffian lived, she'd have been part of the early foundation for this.
Had Native Dancer not had such problematic ankles, Ruffian could have mothered a new breed of champion Thoroughbred racehorses like none before.
Native Dancer had magic. But there has to be substance, not all magic.
That is also incorrect. Native Dancer was a relatively sound horse, and had a very long career. There is no proof that horses with his bloodlines are weaker.
The weakness comes from breeding for speed and not strength over a long period of time, not from specific horses. Its a pity that Native Dancer's legacy is so clouded by such myths.
Ruffian's weakness came from Reviewer, not Shenanigans, and not from Native Dancer.
So what if his owners didnt run him into the ground. Just because he didnt race the "standard" amount doesnt mean he was weak. MOW raced only 21 times, War Admiral 26, Count Fleet 21, Secretariat 21, Dr Fager 22...need I go on?
As I said before, the weakness comes from the breeding for speed...not from Native Dancer.
Reply when you have some factual basis to stand on...which I will be waiting a long time for because there is NONE.
Smarty Jones NINE! And look at the inbreeding in the bottom half of his pedigree.
I'm not looking for an argument. But honestly, some humility would be in order.
There was feedback from outside the establishment that helped the Boston Red Sox excel beyond all belief, amid very low expectations. By the same token
If the horse racing world doesn't soon face certain PR realities, they will begin to face the possibility of either dying out, or being shut down. Industry's choice.
He was worth more as a stud, and that was the main reason they retired him.
And it still does NOT prove anything! Street Sense 13, Hard Spun 13, Zarkava 7, Any Given Saturday 11, Monarchos 10, Ravens Pass 12, Henrythenavigator 11, New Approach 7, Tiznow 15, Invasor 12. Its the trend these days, seeing as they make more money in the breeding shed than they do on the track.
Again...NO LINK. Its easy for the undereducated to think that there is because most TBs have ND's blood in their veins.
You're in total denial. You're inside the industry, and you think you know enough. If you know enough, then why are there so many break downs happening when the inbreeding to Native Dancer is CLEARLY the problem? (rhetorical question)
You also need to face the reality of the VERY bad PR that you do for the racing industry by being so arrogant and rude, even if you do have SOME facts. Keep it up. Your industry is dying and you're only hurrying it.
the only race that she ever lost, was the race when she lost her life!!!!!!!
I am 13, and yes, Ruffian captured my heart. I watched the movie which started all my love for her. I became interested in this filly and wanted to learn more. So then, I read a 400 page biography on her. Changed me forever. This is such a beautiful video, to remember such a beautiful horse.
I watch all the Ruffian tributes, and I keep coming back to this one...a really beautiful remembrance. The music is perfect. Ruffian and Eight Belles will have a special place in racing forever.
im sry people but barbaro and eight belles would have never been it the same level as Ruffian. they shouldnt be held at the same level she was known before she went down, they were nobdy who got hurt at big races thats all
I agree. No racehorse can hold a candle to Ruffian, I don't thing even Man O' War could with his personality, though I think he was one of the fastest.
her and Eight belles the horses that beat them one big brown and foolish pleasure owe more than one millon dollars to those fillys who ran thier little haert out, who tried their best both would have won if they hadn't collapsed ion and after the filly Ruffain tried to run more she wasn't gonna let a silly ol' colt mock her but she had to stop.
Eight belles had been in front for a small bit but fell back she collapsed after her race her long slender legs went down and those colts owe them big.
exaura, yes, didn't Ruffian keep on going for 40-50 yards, after her leg snapped? The lady just would not give up, until she absolutely had to as her body failed her........really there are no words to convey her courage, her spirit and heart.
One in a million filly RIP dear sweet heroic Ruffian!
Ruffian was a Amazign Horse! I've seen the Story/Video yesterday in TV...it was so sad! She is a legend! She was so young...I thougt she won in the Match race, but the leg...=(
im sure shes playing in the meadows with eith bells barbaro and the other greats as we speak and as i noticed waching this video eight bells and ruffain were the same in color and were both put down because of injuries
im not crying, there's just...... something in my eye ;(

Ruffian died because she had a disease called Soft Bones,
which is commen in horses Ruffian's age. They say she hit her leg but,
that was not true, her father broke down 3 times then finally was put down in,
his field. And her mother broke her two front leges the same way as Ruffian.
Oh and she died in 1979 two years after Ruffian's death.

@ClemTigers77 She was better than Secretariat. But part of the problem really was inbreeding, which most today are trying desperately to deny.

and im saying too that not as much happens in barrels
what do you mean 2&3 year old if i get what your saying your talking about the horses and we train the horses and we make sure the horse has no HEAT in the legs before we barrel race
i dont want to get into this anymore im just stating some thing that what happened to 8 bells im saying what i feel that i think it was the riders fault they felt her leg and knew she had heat but...still raced her
deana545 2 years ago
Cameras....hard to admit tho it is, you have a valid point. It is said that what made Ruffian great (her tenacity and will to RUNNNNNN), is what cost her her life when she woke from the anesthesia. All around, hers is prolly the saddest tale I know of in horse racing. I honour her memory and always will, and celebrate her life and spirit. Thanks for all here who join me in doing so!!
cymrufem1 2 years ago
um no im not barrel raceing yeah that does nothing to them btw they knew ruffin had heat in her leg they felt her leg and KNEW she had heat but..they still raced her
deana545 2 years ago
What about barrel futurities limited to 2 & 3 year olds? Don't tell me that does "nothing" to them. I've seen as many barrel horses break down as I have race horses.
I'm not trying to argue to say that they should have raced her. I'm just sayin' that crap happens in every sport.
RememberRuffian 2 years ago
@deana545 ok seriously she died because she was going so fast in her last race and she stepped wrong but kept going and it did more damage
breyerhorsegirl37 1 year ago
@deana545 no no no you got it wrong! if you watch the movie and the actual race, the hits the side of the starting gate, the movie does a close up on that part, when she hit it it fractured her leg and it gave way and snaped!
SeeYaOnSondee 8 months ago
@SeeYaOnSondee Use your brains, if she'd snapped her leg when she jumped from the gate how could she have run for the first half mile? She'd have gone down in the first fifty yards! What you saw in the movie was her striking the gate. The break actually happened after the first half mile. It is true that Velazquez could not pull her up for about 100-200 yards because she fought to keep running, but she did NOT run from the beginning of the race with a fractured ankle.
Writeowl 1 month ago
@SeeYaOnSondee Read "Ruffian: Burning From the Start". It explains clearly what happened.
Writeowl 1 month ago
@deana545 How can you sit here today, and say, that they knew she had heat in her legs, when that information isn't listed anywhere????
I think Frank W loved her, as of all the other people involved with her did.
If you love something/someone you won't be risking their lives, over something so stupid as a match race.
As for Ruffians genes, her halfbrother Buckfinder, is listed as one of the best producers of sound showjumpers, dressage horses and event horses.

What happened to Ruffian is a sad part of the sport. But right or wrong, racing will go on. Take a closer look: When Ruffian broke her leg, her jockey tried to stop her immediately- SHE FOUGHT TO KEEP RUNNING! That is what made her great.
CamerasAreAwesome 2 years ago 2
Whether you agree with the sport of horse racing or not, there are a few facts to consider: 1.These horses are better cared for than most household pets. 2. Accidents happen. They aren't happening more often, people are just starting to take more notice now that PETA has gotten involved. 3. These horses run cause they WANT to. A 1200 lb animal is not going to run just because a little guy is sitting on his back with a tiny piece of leather. He might as well be a fly on the horse's back!
CamerasAreAwesome 2 years ago 4
RememberRuffian 2 years ago 2
@RememberRuffian its not abuse =)
gobarrelracing 1 year ago
@CamerasAreAwesome i think racing is great but they should wait to race them until they are 4 so they can grow more and be faster because they would be stronger
breyerhorsegirl37 1 year ago
@CamerasAreAwesome You're wrong. They ARE breaking down more often, and it's because of inbreeding or linebreeding to Native Dancer. All of the major breakdowns over the past 35 or so years have been in the same family. NONE have been unrelated to Native Dancer.
englishhorndude 1 year ago
@englishhorndude No, you are wrong. The problem has NOTHING to do with Native Dancer. He had hoof issues, not bone. And of course Native Dancer is going to be related to the horses that breakdown...he is an ancestor to most of the thoroughbreds alive today!!
Ruffian4Ever 10 months ago
@Ruffian4Ever Of course he's in the pedigrees of most thoroughbreds alive today. That's what inbreeding does. Three quarters of the breeds world-wide is inbred to him. It's destroyed the breed.
englishhorndude 10 months ago
JUST AN OPINION but I began to hate horse racing when all of the horse's began to break their legs and pass away. I think it is retarded to see how fast your poor little horse can go and push then and push untill their bones can't take it anymore. And the worst part is, most people are in it for the money. The horse's want to run, and they want to please, but the owners go to far......racing sucks!!!!!
KelseyRoxProductions 2 years ago
yeah it is sad. my uncle used to own this huge racing farm, and even he said that if the horse didn't make money; they'd do what u would to an employee; fire em. or sell them to slaughter or just abuse and use them to reproduce
gwgallopergirl 2 years ago
i think the age a horse is allowed to race is like 4. since it takes awhile for a horses knees to fill in. that why sometimes you get these break downs
HorseCrazieGirl15 2 years ago
So you are against ALL equine competitions then, correct? Actually all competitions that involve animals, right?
RememberRuffian 2 years ago 3
no, I just don't like horse racing and some rodeo stuff. I think it's mean. This is a perfect example!
KelseyRoxProductions 2 years ago
@RememberRuffian no she does jumping and shes not against that!. she doesnt like that they race horses when they are that young at it gives them back and oof problems when they are older from riding them at a young age!
breyerhorsegirl37 1 year ago
@KelseyRoxProductions Im sorry, kay? but most horses LOVE to race, would you deny them that? racehorses are much loved, and they are not only in it for the money.
LifeIsGsdsAndHorses 1 year ago
@KelseyRoxProductions But it didn't always suck. It sure does now, though. They need to stop the inbreeding.

i hate the people who raced ruffian its so said we should stop careing about whos horse is faster then that person we should stop racing 2 year old who really cares if they have the most spunk i whant so much to go on a strike for racing filly i mean 8 year old mares are just as good am i right right and that person who said "people like YOU are the probblem" no i dont think so poor horses are out there dieing beacuse stupied ass holes dont care about if the horse is safe enough to race ugh
deana545 2 years ago
Oh shut up already! It was nobody's fault that Ruffian broke down. Why dont you go join that ridiculous and hypocritical group PETA.
Nickomas88 2 years ago

Ruffian (1975), Charismatic (1999), Barbaro (2005), Eight Belles (2008)
All were descendants of NATIVE DANCER.
englishhorndude 2 years ago
not only that but if you look in their pedigree some horses have the same horse 2 or 3 times in a 5 generation pedigree. and sometimes there are three or four horses who appear 2 or three times. Its ridiculous. and breeders now breed horsesmostly, or only, for speed rather than strength and durability which, in my opinion, leads to weaker bones and a greater chance of deformation or health problems.
Rememberthebest 2 years ago
But notice how many of those horses (the ones you see so many times) tend to be almost entirely ones of NATIVE DANCER's family.
englishhorndude 2 years ago
I guess I've never noticed it before but I can see it now. maybe he had some sort of weird gene, kinda like Impressive had the HYPP gene. maybe native dancer's is just something to d with bone structure. Good point. I'd like to look into that more.

Tbezz I see your point. I also bemoan the "jinx" placed on Foolish Pleasure after Ruffian's demise. He did nothing but do what was asked of him, ie. run his heart out, and his legacy is forever soiled by those not in the know saying he "beat Ruffian". Nobody won, what a tragedy!!!

This was the last match race ever. Never will there be another match race again.
2-year-old horses shouldn't run. Not just fillies. This sport is just as dangerous for the boys, hun.

Then I'll take it to the owners of the copyright to this song.
Horses DON'T break down because of increasing speed. Only because of either increasing weight or weaker bones. Period!
englishhorndude 3 years ago
This was a very beautiful video.
Some humility and respect for the opinions of others would be HIGHLY in order.
englishhorndude 3 years ago
If this was used without permission and I'm insulted and disrespected again, I'll get charges brought by the owners of R Kelly's copyrights. If used with permission, I'll get your permission revoked.
It's time the racing industry faced some realities it's been running from for decades.
Humility!!!

People like YOU are the problem!
And I'll speak here if I wish!
englishhorndude 3 years ago
You're not going to be using copyrighted material to insist that there's no problem with the health of horses inbred to Native Dancer.
People aren't going to be watching races year after year as horse after horse after horse breaks their leg(s) in high profile races.
This simply ISN'T the way it's going to be!
The industry can get a clue or be shut down!

Denial it only insults Ruffian's memory, and that of any number of other helpless, glorious equines.
englishhorndude 3 years ago
BTW- Really really nice video, it is heartbraking, but you chose really nice pictures/videos to put in it

RIP Ruffian!!!!!!!!

IndieBeauty07 3 years ago
Thank you so much for posting this video, and for allowing the discussion.
englishhorndude 3 years ago
More than anything, I think a couple things sealed her fate:
1. having a previous hairline fracture in her right front leg...
2. Hitting her left shoulder coming out of the starting gate (as I've since heard about and read about)... causing her to
3. [I'm pretty sure] be on a "right lead" during the match race, placing more stress on an already weakened right foreleg...
If I'm right about later parts of this, then it's also [admittedly] irrelevant who she was related to. Tragic either way.
englishhorndude 3 years ago
Her hairline fracture was in her right HIND leg the year previous.
She was suppose to be on the right lead at that point in the race. Horses race on the right lead in the straightaways and on their left lead in the turns.
But I do believe it was hitting the gate, and that she either became sore on her left front and was putting more weight on her right, or that she injured her right front and it gave way. Either way I am pretty sure it was the gate...even Frank Whitely thought so.
Ruffian4Ever 3 years ago
Thank you so much for making and posting this video, however. It's beautiful.

JubinoKiba 3 years ago

She's the only one that comes up.
englishhorndude 3 years ago
Thank you so much for posting this.
Nobody would talk about her after that day...
... until Barbaro. Both tragically inbred to NATIVE DANCER.
englishhorndude 3 years ago
Thats incorrect. Ruffian was not inbred to Native Dancer. He was her dam-sire, but thats the only time he shows up in her pedigree.
Ruffian4Ever 3 years ago
Apologies for misuse of "inbreeding".
But there has to be substance, not all magic.
englishhorndude 3 years ago
That is also incorrect. Native Dancer was a relatively sound horse, and had a very long career. There is no proof that horses with his bloodlines are weaker.
The weakness comes from breeding for speed and not strength over a long period of time, not from specific horses. Its a pity that Native Dancer's legacy is so clouded by such myths.
Ruffian's weakness came from Reviewer, not Shenanigans, and not from Native Dancer.
Ruffian4Ever 3 years ago
He only ran half the number of races as was standard at the time. The information is out there, on Wikipedia and elsewhere.
if not for weaknesses in the ankles in his bloodlines.. then why the problems in:
1. Charismatic (1999)
2. Barbaro (2006)
3. Eight Belles (2008)
All were related, via inbreeding or line-breeding, to Native Dancer.
Regardless of whether I'm correct... There's been too much obsession with that horse, at the expense of stronger better traits from better horses.
englishhorndude 3 years ago
So what if his owners didnt run him into the ground. Just because he didnt race the "standard" amount doesnt mean he was weak. MOW raced only 21 times, War Admiral 26, Count Fleet 21, Secretariat 21, Dr Fager 22...need I go on?
As I said before, the weakness comes from the breeding for speed...not from Native Dancer.
Reply when you have some factual basis to stand on...which I will be waiting a long time for because there is NONE.
Ruffian4Ever 3 years ago
NONE? Really?
Smarty Jones NINE! And look at the inbreeding in the bottom half of his pedigree.
I'm not looking for an argument. But honestly, some humility would be in order.
There was feedback from outside the establishment that helped the Boston Red Sox excel beyond all belief, amid very low expectations. By the same token
If the horse racing world doesn't soon face certain PR realities, they will begin to face the possibility of either dying out, or being shut down. Industry's choice.
englishhorndude 3 years ago
He was worth more as a stud, and that was the main reason they retired him.
And it still does NOT prove anything! Street Sense 13, Hard Spun 13, Zarkava 7, Any Given Saturday 11, Monarchos 10, Ravens Pass 12, Henrythenavigator 11, New Approach 7, Tiznow 15, Invasor 12. Its the trend these days, seeing as they make more money in the breeding shed than they do on the track.
Again...NO LINK. Its easy for the undereducated to think that there is because most TBs have ND's blood in their veins.
Ruffian4Ever 3 years ago
You're in total denial. You're inside the industry, and you think you know enough. If you know enough, then why are there so many break downs happening when the inbreeding to Native Dancer is CLEARLY the problem? (rhetorical question)
You also need to face the reality of the VERY bad PR that you do for the racing industry by being so arrogant and rude, even if you do have SOME facts. Keep it up. Your industry is dying and you're only hurrying it.

her and Eight belles the horses that beat them one big brown and foolish pleasure owe more than one millon dollars to those fillys who ran thier little haert out, who tried their best both would have won if they hadn't collapsed ion and after the filly Ruffain tried to run more she wasn't gonna let a silly ol' colt mock her but she had to stop.
