That was exact the same part when I thought WTF?? 2 Minutes? During my military service our instructor told us that the best MG Teams did need about 4 seconds to change the barrel..;-)
@Spi1tz I've heard all kinds of numbers, from 2 seconds to 10 seconds.....my real wondering about the MG42 is how many rounds could be fired between barrel changes....I've heard as low as 150 (ridiculously low) all the way up to 500.....my best guess is between 250 and 500 depending on the rate of fire, 250 if fired all in one long burst, 350 under normal combat conditions (maximum number of rounds recommended in a minute) and 500 rounds if the rate is slower than 350 per minute seems reasonable
@fuggsakes I think your guess is good.. I did my miltary service in Austria and we are using a newer version of the MG 42 (MG 74). The only difference is a heavier bolt which decreases the rafe of fire in order to lower ammunition usage.. We were told to change the barrel after 250 shots even if more would be possible. This way you can avoid pre-ignition of the rounds as the barrel gets quite hot. One time after ~200 shots I burned my hand when unwittingly touching that damn barrel^^
However, this was what we've learned back in '07.. I am pretty sure that in WWII the barrels weren't changed that often as it makes a difference if you are under enemy fire or just practising.. ;-)
Developed in 1942 by Nazi Germany--nothing has been developed as a light machine-gun that fires faster to this day. So much for the fascist regime--but it's sure hard to beat German Engineering. They knew how to kill people !!
barrel could be replaced in less than 2 what?? kinda sounds like he said 2 minutes, which is hilarious, 2 seconds is closer to the real time

@Spi1tz Of course, I'm sure that often in combat, barrels were sometimes used as if they were disposable, fire 500+ rounds and get rid of the barrel.

Amazing piece of history that gun! Proud to have one sat on my bedroom floor as a 'decorative ornament' lol.

how normal is that the 42 mg shots fired 1500
egagu1976 5 months ago
@egagu1976 It fires 1200RPM with the medium (Standard) bolt weight. The lighter bolt produces around 1500RPM.
