i know koons is one of the most controversial artists of our time, but many of you need to read up a little more before agreeing with this idiot, and his camera. if you're going to make fun, at least be smart about it. anyhow here is an article for anyone who is interested.
(type this in on google, url was too many characters)
The thing about Jeff Koons is that he is pretty much 99% business man and 1% artist. The business skills he gained on wall street must have sharpened his focus to articulate his way into the art world with his macy's day parade elements. That doesn't really say much for that art school in Chicago. I am not impressed at all for this guy is a prime example of the bullshit artist that capitalizes in the art market. It is time for talent to take over the art world again. Go Lisa Yuskavage!!!!
I don't like Koons's work, but I think it is very important and will remain so for a long time. When I look at one of his works, I don't see anything notable. But, then, when I see his work as a whole, from the floating basketballs to the hanging hearts, I see the most notable artist of the past 30 years.
Koons works in series. Seeing one work only doesn't make sense. You have to have an idea of the whole series to understand his work. This is what I meant...Do your homework before displaying gratuitous comments.
There are times when you get the impression that someone is not being genuine. I just got that feeling. He seemed very seemed very detached from the art's process.
look into the detatched character of andy warhol, koon's persona has precedents. koon's has proven his commitment in his long career, whether you 'like' it or not. using assistants does not mean you don't care, it's a common practice that helps artists produce work. research the Guild System of the past for the precedents there. :)
I watched an interview with him in an art history class I took. He noted that he doesn't create the work but does "suggest" what should be done. He seemed VERY fake. I dunno bout this guy.
To all viewers of the "Kalm Report". FYI: Steven Winn, of the San Francisco Chronicle, has selected "Jeff Koons on the Roof at the Metropolitan Museum" as one of his YouTube Picks Friday, June 27. He includes a very perceptive review of the program.
i stand by my point...since mrwow is obviously not my real name my personal life is not up for debate here ,so......your point is silly and your personal attack is desperate:(
Another artist who doesnt do his own work, he shouldnt even be considered an artist.
Should a remote control or television desingner be considered a fine artist too, just because they design something then have someone else mass produce it? I dont think so.
wow. so i guess Michelangelo, Reubens and every other artist who worked in the guild system (centuries of art!) are frauds? wow. Godard, Hitchcock and Fellini had help on their films, so they are frauds too? the world of production is very complicated and your comment seems a little silly:)
Obviously superficial and shallow and passe ala Warhol's balloons and deadlocked heritage but try as I might I just can't bring myself to dislike the man. Compared with the hosts of creeps in the art world, he is a charming prince and I liked the family photos anyway. probably his most important work. Reminded me of Raphael and his model.
Good questioning at the end, you didn't let him change the subject but I believe his answer too.
Howdy "James"- Coming to you from Minneapolis. Great job getting a comment from Mr. Super Neo-Dada himself (Senor Koons). It was great to watch him deal with your questions. You have left me to ponder his comments about the art market in relation to Duchamp's perspective. Hmmm... Keep it up Mr. Kalm.
nice sculptures! yep they take a little while to create ;-0)
interesting that Jeff has given an interview to Christie's auction house for their Post-War and Contemporary Art, which is selling his 'The New', for an artist to state that he has no involvement of or within the art market, is a tad ambiguous, for one he has a clear and procise pricing strategy! through Gagosian. The interview although, talks about the 80's etc, is a clear use of the artist to sell this work! i love it!
i always think koons ambiguity is a character device to lower the guard of whoever he's talking to, a ' your smarter than me' vibe. i love it too! i remember andy warhol speaking about the value of a good dealer, saying'you can't sell paintings at woolworths'......all goes back to andy, then duchamp, then....koons is a clever man.
That was a very cool LA Times article about you James. Congrats. I wish somewhere like Art Cal would hire you to go to openings. Plus, if you were on their payroll they might be able to convince you go to a photography opening every now and then. :)
Dear "Kalm Report" fans, there's a feature article in today's (April 23) LA Times, Arts and Culture section on the "Kalm Report" and the "Jeff Koons On the Roof" program by staff writer Thomas Mulligan Check it out, JK
hey mr. kalm, just read the l.a. times piece with the picture! f*** you hollywood! seriously, congratulations james and kate on the spotlight, you deserve some attention(and a grant or two).thanks for all the vids:)
thanks mr. kalm, and brave question. i think he was somewhat honest, he's a busy guy who doesn't have to think about the market, he's loaded. i'll be ridiculed for this one but........successful artists are always attacked as insincere and blamed as if they create this market situation, when the real agitator in these situations is envy. thanks for this one:)
Not a Koons fan, but the big piece kinda got to me. Before you started talking about the materials I couldn't tell what material it was. I thought it was transparent until I saw a person walk to the backside of it and I could no longer see the person. Very weird and curious. I want to see that one.
At least he spoke to you. From what I get, he is trying to immortalize everyday sentimental "kitsch" objects we usually throw away, and take for granted... to be a time capsule, a reflection on modern-industry-production and our personal folly, or whatever... a legitimate theory (close to Warhol-ian), but do we still have to endure looking at it!??!! BLLEEECCH!!
I can't help but think that there are going to be some birds that will die with that one.
It has a strange effect with the reflection and the illusion of transparency, parts of it seems to disappear. Very weird and dangerous if you're flying low. JK
Agreed, very disconcerting but that's what I enjoyed about it. They do have a presence that is much stronger than their supposed meaning and he is just a little too comfortable, smug and cautious for me to appreciate his work on all levels, and from his history and what those "objects" must cost for him to make, I cannot believe he doesn't watch the market. A rare glimpse for me, thank you.

Perhaps the best thing Mr. Koons can do for art is for him to jump off the roof of the Metropolitan!
