soo metal begins around here <3 lucky bastards does who where there! cant imagine the reaction of people back in that day they seeing soo hard fast and soo perfect performance show, cry =(
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this, as I have been into PRIEST since around 1978 and have never ever seen this before. This is soo freaking cool. Thanks again . This is back in the day when it wasnt fashionable to like this kinda thing and a t shirt could only be obtained at a gig. The MUSIC WAS ABOUT VOLUME AND POWER and not punkish attitude. GOD bless all Priest fans forever. TURN IT UP!
I've met Les Binks a few times (he was drummer of my mate's band in the 90s) and it wasn't him - he never even considered himself as a permanent member of Priest. He didn't want to go to Japan but he was roped in at the last minute cause they couldn't find anyone to join full time. The gigs mentioned were 1974. John Hinch was the drummer on Rocka Rolla and they must have been recording this at the time - so it must be him. Alan Moore came back for Sad Wings - then Phillips - then Binks in 1978.
I wrote what I said because this video reminds me of that time. I remember them playing before they started to wear all that leather, just like in this video. And yeah, Les Binks was with them during that time. Anyway, I rarely comment on videos. I used to jam with my band in Phoenix at a place called ROCKERS(Rob was part owner) in the 1980's. Those were the days. I'm 50 now and own a second home in Paradise Valley, AZ. Rob is my neighbor and friends with my wife and I. There you have it!!!
It was late 1977 when I first met the band at the Starwood Club in Hollywood. I was a fan about one year before and when they came to LA I got to go backstage(a friend worked the door) and spent from about 2am until 6am with the entire band after the show, minus Halford. They couldn't even pack that 300+ club, but I instinctively knew a band like that would be on the very top, and I insisted that to the band. Over the years, we still remain friends. Rob lives just four houses away from me. TRUE!!
@BellumSacrumBellum28 - I first saw them in January 1974 (without Tipton) supporting Budgie in Newcastle - there was very few people clapping - it was very different for the time. The Sin after sin gig was incredible (saw them May 77 at Redcar)
@NeilThompson30 Excellent! That truly does go back a long time. I'm quite certain they sounded completely different back then. Being from England, you got that chance to see many British bands in the very beginning as I once did here in America, and living in Hollywood back in the day. So tell me what was the line-up? I assume a quartet then? Was Halford with them yet, or was it still Atkins? So...for sure K.K., Ian Hill and who was the drummer at the time, Moore?
@BellumSacrumBellum28 - Halford was with them. Don't know who the drummer was - the same package (Budgie/Priest) came back in May 74 (with Tipton) - both gigs they did most (if not all) of what was to become the Rock a rolla album. My brother and I are Priest fanatics but at the time everyone was just waiting for Budgie to come on (Priest were very different for the time) They then did a headline tour for Rock a Rolla which I missed and then the Sad wings tour which I also sadly missed - shame.
@NinjaJedi11 - thanks for the comment - it could have been John Ellis, Alan Moore, Chris Campbell or John Hinch - I assume it was John Hinch. Alan Moore then rejoined and was replaced by SimonPhillips - then came Les Binks.
@NeilThompson30 yeah, either way, given the time period, and all i know of priest it would prpbably be any of the three, im still leaning towrads binks, tho it couldve been phillips
The Priest drummer during this time period is Les Binks and he may be the most under-rated drummer in metal. His drumming on Stained Class is amazing and was really leading edge for the time period in metal. His drums also sounded great. He and Neil Peart were among the first to get away from that early seventies tom-tom sound where everything was dead and muffled and really allow the drums to sound colorful, tonal and bright. Listen to Stained Class and 2112 and compare the sound of the toms.
never cared to much for this song till i saw this video.sour guitar opening then wicked sassy priest at their best.saw this show (opened for U.F.O.)IN1977 in milwaukee.best show ive EVER seen.
Deep Purple-Highway Star came before this. Accept- Fast as a Shark came after this. Both songs and this classic shaped the history and future of metal.
rob went from the stoner look in the old grey whistle videos to this new wave look and then to leather and spikes oh well every body goes thru changes still cool though
Damn , what's up with Rob's outfit?? Looks more like David Bowie than the Black leather Metal God. Maybe it should've been Hellbent for polyester :). No matter what he wears he is still one of the best metal singers of all time.
I was lucky enough to see them in 1975 and onwards. Their confidence grew and grew and when most other bands would of given up, they had an image change and carried on. I still think Robs the best singer ever.
Wish I had had an HD videocam when I saw them in Hollywood 3 months after this was taped. Oh yah, that shit wasn't invented yet!! They played twice as much material as is on Unleashed in the East. EPIC!!!! Wish you were there! The place only held 500 people.

isnt sometimes kind of strange .every video that ive watched and read comments everybody seems to go yeah thats the best metal band ever .but when im playing my music in the place i work all people stares at me so wierd like saying what is that ugly noise?i go havent you heard of judas priest .they go ju who?i go where is all the people that really love this music?dont leave me fucking alone.i want to rock along .i may live in a town where rap takes over.and the ghetto ass music.
My goodness! What a band! Saw them with Maiden back in the day of '81. Yes I'm old. Fucking one of the best concerts I'll ever seen. Maiden opened up from Killers Tour, and then comes Priest. Full fog shit on Beyond the Realms of Death. Shit! Fucking Sinner! On and on it went. Fucking Dallas '81! I will never forget.
We Japanese KNOW what MUSIC is~!!! Greats like these guys and Iron Maiden, Michael Schenker has been HUGE~!!! I knew about them when I was only in elementary school~!!! No kidding! LOL
So I guess it's a crime that I don't own that yet. I was gonna just purchase Live Vengeance 82, but seeing how much The Metalogy has to offer, I guess I should go for the full package.
Cool retro Priest. One of my favourite bands and it was around 1978 I started listening to them. I saw them in concert in 1982 and they rocked Vancouver!
I think the priest first came to Japan in summer 1979. As far as I remember, they were already in the leather-stud costume with Rob wearing a police hat at the time. I regret I didn't go to the concert. Instead I went to see Boston.
@TheSerpineVirus oh, trust me, i have, MANY times... along with every other priest song. notice how i said "one of" in my other comment :) The point is, rob halford is beastly and all judas priest songs are sick.
Judas Priest did in fact Pioneer the sound of Heavy Metal. They also Pioneered the look of Heavy Metal with the studs, leather and the Harley Davidson Motorcycle.
priest has always been my favorite band and halford my fav singer. still is, but seeing him here so animated and hitting all the high notes with ease i wonder what happened. the last few years ive seen him live he barely moves and struggles to hit a lot of words and pretty much cant do any of the high notes i saw him do in the 80's. it kinda hurts to see him like that, i know hes older but that should't matter. but i still think hes the best metal singer ever.
Unlike a female, a man's voice changes with age. You'll often hear an old women sound like a young woman. Halford's voice and flawless singing lives on the remasetered CD's! Every good thing must come to an end.
This was Priest before the "leather-and-studs" look. Until early 1978 they didn't use leather. Rob's outfits were more in a quasi-Freddie Mercury style.
Thanks for posting this Classic footage!!!! It Still ROCKS !!!

For 1978, Les Binks playinig especially the double bass parts were just from a whole other planet.

This is one of the most vocally-challenging songs ever. Rob Halford is a god.

Pioneering fast metal. Judas Priese invented Heavy Metal. This is pioneering work!
British Steel came after this! Screaming for Vengeance two years after that.
What is Rob wearing in Japan for the Japanese audience? A little out of his regular leather garb!

This was Priest before the "leather-and-studs" look. Until early 1978 they didn't use leather. Rob's outfits were more in a quasi-Freddie Mercury style.
