3:14 no one even knows wtf THAT thing he plays actually is..I know this because I've seen buddy do it many times and yet I've never seen even the self proclaimed buddy wannabe clones get anywhere near that kind of a thing going on
Great stuff! I too remember watching this series as a lad, then in later years my dad taking me to see Buddy several times in Birmingham and Coventry, also the Basie band who appeared in Birmingham and Oxford in the mid 70's. The Osmond badge was all to do with Buddy's appearance on Parkinson when he was slagging off the Osmonds. He wore an Osmonds tee-shirt when we saw the band at Birmingham Town Hall the same year.
@MrDrumsdrumsdrums LOL- And it wasn't so much that he hated Donny personally- What Buddy hated was mediocrity- Essentially a music industry that glorified (and promoted) the Donny Osmonds' of the world over real musical talent like his.
This version has to be the greatest one I've ever seen, just superb brass arrangements in the opening segment 0:00 - 0:33 and of course all throughout the rest of the tune. Jaw dropping stuff, thanks for posting!
Mike, thank you so, so much for posting this. I remember watching the 'Big Bands from the Dorchester' series with my father when it aired. (I would have been 10/11 years old!) This was what planted the seed for me with Buddy (and also remember this was the first time I saw Sonny Payne with the Basie Band). Never thought I would see it again - can't tell you what it means. Thanks a million!
i think the best recorded version of this great chart is on Buddy's CD Wham where a band member records the band live in 77&78. One of the best short solo's or breaks i've ever heard.
3:15 classic buddy lick incorporating super human right foot
try it! it's a tough one to get...TRUST ME - yeah love that too (I have a studio version of this) it is between is toms and BD though - watch his hands move to floor tom. He does similar at 3.09 - trust me!! 3.46 he is playing quavers with his BD
couple of different ways to play 3:15, the way he plays it here is RL[TOM] RR [FLOOR] FOLLOWED BY bass drum. the question is HOW many bass drum notes follow it? it's a visual mind fuck at least for me
i live in london and everyone living here has to pay to watch bbc channels and i'm sure this show is in the archives but we would be lucky to ever see it re-run again on british tv.
buddy doesn't seem to be playing at his best on this but its still good.
We all had those ariels reaching what seemed like 500 feet into the sky to pullin those stations but it worked fine.We will never see resruns although we seen a brief clip on the Parkinson Music Highlights(final shows)It's just as well someone had video recorders in those days.
I would kill to have that set of Slingerlands!!!!

has anyone got a live version of "on Broadway" from the strike it Rich album?
great solo in that

Pat Labarbera really cooks on this chart. I like this solo better than his one "At The Top." Almost as good as the one from "The Roar Of '74"

What a treat! Thanks for tidying this up and posting it.

Is that a LINK with a SELMER lig LaBarbera's playing?
luisamarte2000 3 years ago
Sure looks like a STM with a Selmer lig. Walt Weiskopf of later fame in Buddy's Band used the same type setup.

"Time Check" is one of Menza's best charts, and it's absolutely timeless. It sounds as hot today as when he first wrote it.
This is pretty much the lineup that recorded the "Roar of '74" album. I know that Jimmy Bruno was not on the albim, Joe Beck was the guitarist.
My favorite sax soli of all Menza's charts.
Fantastic chart, and a fantastic performance ~
Superb ~

Don't feel so bad, American tv isn't worth a shit any more either. I think crappy programming has caught on around the world....unfortunatly.
bodgaard 3 years ago
i rarely watch tv anymore because it's all about getting people to gamble.
hey did you hear about the scandal of the phone in rip off in london?
they ripped people off running into millions of pounds.
you would think that would have brought the entire tv network down but no.
yet if you drop a mere piece of paper on the pavement you get a fine...unbelievable.

the sound is a little muffled and it is live and an old recording - a triple whammy - it may not be his playing that sounds ropey.

@bigbreadeaterellis still, its damn good

@bigbreadeaterellis buddy himself described this brief era'74'75 as not being his best just a lil slump he killed it all the same!
