As a photographic artist, what matters the most is the process, thinking beforehand of what I what, or even need, as a final image and achieving it, sometimes with the mistakes and mishaps, that produce an image I can look at.

I also try to apply this to my professional photography...why am I taking this image...what is it suppose to accomplish for my client?

Interesting. Sometimes I work the way you describe. Conceive of an idea, play with it, consider how to achieve it, action it. Other times I haven't got a clue what I'm going to do when I begin, just that I must, and it appears like one of those magic painting books you paint with water. Oddly, those are often my best paintings.
