@gsprichard98 I used to be a Cadets expert. I've seen every show from 1993-present, as well as 83, 84, 87, 89, and 90, at least twice. Not too bad for a guy who still has three years before he ages out.
Sorry bud. I know NH has one of the best programs in Kentucky, but they're not a top five drum corps of 76 brass performers capable of reaching over 120 dB. :/
It's too much baritone @doublebassheeltoe. I know it probably has more to do with the camera than anything else, but it was not very well balanced at all. There is a better lot video of this piece from 2009 on YouTube somewhere (sans the percussion beating away in the background).
I just find it really REALLY odd that a middle school is playing this. No offense to your MS, but your director must either have a lot of faith in you kids or is just plain stupid... This piece is WAYYY too mature for a middle school band to play. That's why you think it's boring. Doublebass is right. You need to gain a LOT of experience before even attempting a piece as beautiful as this.
Man, I wouldn't even say that. It's mostly dynamics and balance that makes this piece difficult, and if the director can work that out, this MS should be fine. I was merely referring to the meaning of this song, but you are absolutely right.
@doublebassheeltoe As a former music education major, I can say that this song is too hard for most middle school bands. The clarinet part is written in the part of it's register where - unless you are a really good high school or college-level band - you will not play the notes in tune. The saxophone part is written in a lot of it's lower register at pianissimo, which is VERY difficult to do, even for the most experienced players. I, personally, would not give Hymnsong to a middle school band.
@IIIThreat Agreed! I played this for a concert band contest in varsity band. This was very difficult. I remember saxophones having trouble on it. For me it wasn't bad at all though. I was on bass clarinet.
Dude, I done played it. Feel privelidged to be playing such an awesome song. You don't understand how much humanity is behind that song. Perhaps one day you will know.
It's stuff like this that make me wish I stayed in drum corps

I wish you could hear the mellos more in this recording. Their part is so cool during the big hit.
gazelleman08 3 years ago
Yeah. You can still hear them ok, but I like how you can hear the baritones well.
doublebassheeltoe 3 years ago
I agree. The baris don't get enough credit for their parts in songs like this.

@IIIThreat Undoubtedly. Even the saxophones in the high school wind ensemble, both who are very experienced, have a lot of trouble with the sax part.

we have to play that in our middle school, I have like fifty rests in the whole thing, it is so boring

It's cool man. With experience will come the knowledge. Not saying you're dumb, but in life all things are based on experience.
