What you naturally didn't mention is that Russell died on board a Nazi U-boat towards Ireland with the specific aim of conducting a bombing campaign having recieved traing from the German secret service, the Abwehr.

@godbrother10 Kristallnacht had happened, Hitler had annexed Austria, Poland, France, the low countries, Scandanavia, had introduced anti-semetic laws and would almost certainly have done the same had he successfully invaded Britain in 1940. There was little idologically speaking in his mind that would have prevented him from invading Ireland.

Having a statue of Sean Russell deserves to be seen as being every bit as unacceptable as a statue to Sir Oswald Moseley.

Where is the evidence that Sean Russell hated Jews or actually "collaborated" with the Nazis? Sean Russell was active as operational assist to Robert Briscoe( a Jewish IRA Volunteer) who was in the IRA during the Irish war of independence.

Sean Russell only sought aid at all to Free his country. The Nazis never killed a quarter of the Irish population nor starved Ireland for profit. The British empire did.

Russell attempted collaboration with the Nazis. This was completely and utterly wrong and there is no cause in the world that could justify it.

Irish historian Brian Hanley suggests that Russell was not a Nazi but concludes that his letters to his German contacts "betray astonishing political naiveté". You can't then say you respect Frank Ryan when Sean Russell and Frank Ryan had the same beliefs and convictions and were dear friends.

You are viewing his actions in isolation from the context in which they ocurred. Instead of opposing a common enemy of humanity, or even simply remaining neutral, the IRA under Russell's leadership chose to attempt to collaborate. Russell saw the Nazis merely as "the enemy of his enemy", when in reality they were the worst mass murderers in history, with the possible exception of Stalin.

Little was known of the Nazi's horrific war crimes in Ireland at this time. Ireland was a neutral state, they didn't know who to believe they didn't know what was ellaborated propaganda and what was fact. I have said that Russell was probably astonishingly politically naive.

The way that newspapers kept the majority of the Irish people unaware of what was going on in the War has often been critisied. Russell needed arms to combat the British as in WWI the Irish Republicans agreed to seek German Guns, that was all, no strings attached. Sean Russell dedicated his life to the Irish Course and it is wrong for ignorant people to brand him a Nazi.

I applaud them for confronting the blueshirts. but they should've maintained this position- opposition to fascism- throughout the war. They never should have made contact with the Nazis. This was a morally bankrupt decision and it is one that Irish republicans should renounce.
